    If Mike was, say, among a 100 people who took the test, and he had the highest score, he would still be in the 99th percentile. Percentile is calculated as (L/P)*100, where P=Total number of people taking the test (100), and L=Number of people with a score lower than Mike’s (99, he himself of course being the only one who doesn’t have a lower score than anyone else). So (99/100)*100=99th percentile. If the number of people taking the test gets higher, the percentile gets higher (e.g., with 200 people taking the test, and Mike scoring highest, he would in the (199/200)*100=99.5th percentile), but Mike indeed (or anyone, for that matter) can never be in the 100th percentile.

    With enough people floating point arithmetic and rounding precision means you would be in the 100th percentile. 100==99.999999999999999. So if you came first out of one thousand million million people, you would be in the 100th percentile.

  • @aarongreen7143

    @aarongreen7143

    It’s simpler than that. If you just consider the lowest one percent would be in the range of 0-1 percent which would be the ‘first’ percentile. So the last percentile would be in the range 99-100. Therefore the 99th percentile is the highest possible as the 100th would mean the range 100-101 (which can’t exist as it’s not possible to exceed 100% on any test)

  • @sillyking1991

    @@aarongreen7143 if 0-1 was your 'first' percentile...then the 99th percentile would be 98-99...for the exact same reason that the '19th century' is the 1800's. to illustrate this really easily: 0-1 is 1st (notice how the label is the top of the range. 1 and 1st) they should all work that way. i.e. 3rd percentile is 2-3. 50th is 49-50. if suddenly you switch to the label being the lower of the range (i.e. 98th is 98-99), you break it. at some point you're going to have either a single label that covers double the range (i.e. 39th is 38-40) or you miss a chunk of people (i.e. 27th is 26-27 but 28th is 28-29...where is 27-28?) or you have 2 labels that mean the same thing. (i.e. both 27th *and* 28th mean 27-28) the 1st percentile means that at least 1% of people (that did the thing you're all comparing) did worse than you. the 99th percentile means that at least 99% of people (that did the thing you're all comparing) did worse than you. its not 'simpler' than the OP claimed. its exactly what the OP claims the reason you can never have a 100th percentile is as *simple* as 'percentile refers to how many got a lower score than the one you got. since you participated, and didn't score lower, its impossible for everyone to have scored lower.

  • @hitthefries

    @hitthefries

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@David-fd8hy nah. It’s annoyingly more complicated than who’s born in the family or not. Remember Diana was a princess(because her title was Diana, princess of wales). Meghan is technically a princess, upon marriage her title automatically becomes Princess Henry of Wales (Harry). But she got another title on top of that, Duchess. That takes precedence over Princess Henry for convenience reasons as well as it’s a Dukedom that passes down, the Wales title ends at Harry. Same way how Harry is now officially (HRH, before 2020) The Duke of Sussex officially in the Uk. Harry is still called Prince Harry (just not Prince Harry of Wales) because he’s a blood royal and he had that title since birth, so that’s what you’re thinking off. The born royals have Prince/Princess before their names because their birth titles were Prince(ss) X of Y. Not sure if Kate will be referred to as Princess Kate/Catherine eventually when she gets the title too, because she’s a Duchess now and they may just stick to that since that’s how we all know her. But either way she’ll have a princess title even if there’s no “Princess ____”. It’s all arbitrary, really, but basically Meghan (and Kate) has a princess title only if they use their husband names right now. So no need to be smug about it!

    The issue is one of nomenclature. By definition, percentile means 100 possible outcomes. There must be the numbers 1-99 for 99 outcomes. The only two alternatives for the remaining outcome are either 0 or 100. Which is retained is determined arbitrarily. The designers of the tests decided to include 0, for a person who did nothing right, which meant excluding 100, since retaining both 0 & 100 would create 101 possible outcomes for the percentile field in violation of that field's definition. They could have just as easily chosen the other way.

  • @Sphagetti__

    @Sphagetti__

    Жыл бұрын

    They couldn't have, a percentile in this context would mean x% if people were worse than you were (which is based on the mathematical nomenclature around percentiles, so most definitely not up to the testmasters). 0 is possible here as if you are the worst, nobody is worse than you. 100 isn't because even if you did perfectly, you can't have 100% of people be worse than you because you are there too.

    If he was really serious about helping her excel on the LSAT, he wouldn't have approached her a week before the exam. He would have approached her three months out and coached her regularly. Why? Because if she was brilliant enough to excel on the LSAT with one week of prep--and very, very few people are--she would have excelled the first time she took it. There's no reason to think that much is going to change in that week.

    If you're in the 99th percentile, it means you scored better than 99% of the total people who took the test, so you're in the top 1%. If you're in the 80th percentile, it means you scored better than 80% of people who took the test, so you're in the top 20%. There is no 100th percentile because even if you're literally the top score, you're not better than 100% of people who took the test, because you're one of the people who took the test, and you can't be better than yourself. You're part of the top 1%, which puts you in the 99th percentile.

    Getting a perfect score still puts you in the 99 percentile due to multiple students scoring perfectly. Percentage is a number out of 100. Percentile is a ranking based on pre determined rules of the set. Differentiating those within the 99 percentile would require their own new ranking system consisting of only those within that criteria. This isn't interesting to me. Just thought I'd share that.
