    1) Where is the father? Two vs. one might have saved the chick. 2) The surviving chick - maybe out of terror - but him not moving, not making a sound, that probably saved him. 3) Since it was 2018 - anyone has an update on the surviving chick?

@@ThatOneguy-br3uf Bluebirds and purple martins are very special to everyone, especially the Amish people in my area. They set up cage traps and capture enough sparrows and starlings to fill 50 gallon drums each year. I shoot sparrows when I'm home, yet enough male sparrows always seems to manage to survive unnoticed and do what they do to perpetuate their own species. My neighbor's dogs and cats are not native species either, I try not to "let them" kill my wildlife either.

Rachel and Steve are such great parents to their kids, theirs never really any sibling rivalry with this family too due to how well they take care of their chicks, and now a 2nd one is dead due to a GHO attack. My heart hurts massively for yous Rachel and Steve. R.I.P to the little one and hopefully nothing happens to this last chick.

I know this is 2 years ago, but I want to tell you the light they use to show us the nest at night, is called night vision. It is not the same as a light you use in your house. They can't see the light. To them it is a very black night. Also, the owl's eyes are much bigger and have great light gathering capabilities. They gather light from the stars and the moon. The Osprey are day birds. Their eyes do not have the best light gathering capability so the owl has the advantage at night. The owl probably also has a nest with babies. The food is necessary.

I hated to see this baby taken by the GHO, but owls have to eat, too. I was saddened by Rachel's cries during the early daylight hours, and very saddened by the chick's suffering (which looks like didn't last for more than 15 minutes). Rachel has been a valiant protector. Why did she leave the nest in the middle of the night, though? Was she aware that GHO was ready to attack? Can anyone recommend a good book on osprey behavior that I could read? Many thanks to the Audubon live cam for bringing us an up-close view of bird life.

This VIDEO should have a graphic warning for children or those who cannot handle this ; as this was a horrible long attack that wasn't a normal way the GHO has taken these chicks in the past!!! Rachel will only be able to keep the youngest one alive by staying on the nest itself with it nightly; same sad situation as last year, very 😢 sad. Hopefully they at HI check the territory around the Nest & trees for the chick because there were big crashing sounds in the trees when Rachel chased after the GHO in the 2nd attack of the nest. Also, the surviving chick on the nest should be checked as it got trampled with talons by the GHO & mum during Rachel trying to attack the GHO off her nest. Thank you for sharing the struggles we see that these lovely Osprey have in raising their young ti fledgling Arlene 🙏😭😭

You dont make any sense? First of all, this is the nighttime. The owls have a huge advantage over ospreys in sight so it gives an upperhand. Ospreys in my area have wounded several ghos without problem before. And no species is idiotic. To be fair, I like ospreys better but go ospreys and owls. Also ospreys are good at defending too, dont jump to conclusions over a single video.

@@dedsode2740 Of course some species are idiotic - Koala Bears are notoriously stupid for example, but they are cute so people ignore this. Some species are so stupid that they can barely survive without human help, cf: Panda's. As for argument that Owl's have an advantage at night: Yes they do. So what? Humans are better at hunting than any other animal. Our intelligence is not an unfair advantage.

I don't know why you have these terrible videos of these birds killing each other. Rachel will never raise a family with that owl around. I know its nature but it's people who watch this are just blood seakers.

I beg to differ, only Jesus Christ, Son of God is the way and the truth and the life! Man has no excuse as God the Father reveals Himself through nature and one day very very soon every knee WILL bough and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen
