170721 Audubon Hog Island Osprey - Osprey Mother vs GHO

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The Great Horned Owl returns to try to grab the last chick in this nest. Rachel, the osprey mother, was not going to let the GHO succeed. She has defended her chick from each GHO attack. The GHO was determined; GHO tried 5 times. In the end, the GHO does not bother and flies off.
This was great to observe. Let's hope the osprey chick only has some minor aches and will successfully fledge in the next week or two. What a traumatic experience for the little one.

UPDATE: Jun 30, 2020
The 3rd chick, named Bailey, survived this attack. She's a trooper as her travails continued. You can read about it here:

After this story, we later got word that Bailey will make her forever home at Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Florida.

Great video. Thoughts: 1. Owls have such an advantage at night. 2. Owls keep a low profile during the day for a reason. 3. Osprey Mom did a good job defending the last chick. 4. The Mom has to do double duty. She defends at night & she also must eat during the day

That was tough to watch and awesome at the same time!! I've been following an Osprey nest in PA for years. I've watched a Daddy Osprey take on two Eagles that got too close to the nest. The size difference was unreal. Here at least Rachel seems to be as big as the GHO. I have so much respect for these amazing raptors. Thanks so much for this. Rachel is a BadAss for sure!!

I was wondering if she was trying to make her chick fledge? Not sure, don’t know birds very well, but I could see that as a last ditch attempt to get the chick somewhere (relatively) safer. Clearly she was trying to communicate something! Edit: just had the thought, perhaps she was trying to get the chick to grip the nest as tight as the chick could to avoid being grabbed more easily by the owl? Using the chick’s instinct to NOT fledge yet. Very smart mama bird if so!

No, the GHO did not get the last chick who was named Bailey. However, Bailey resides in a conservation center as the injuries she incurred here and later on made it not possible to release her back to the wild. Here's some of Bailey's store -- www.audubon.org/news/the-saga-continues-bailey-beleaguered-hog-island-osprey We received news later on that it would be her forever home.

Personally I think the light from the cam had a lot to do with it even though GHO's have excellent eye sight. I don't think this type of bird watching should be allowed especially when it lights up an area that otherwise would not be lit.

The light you see is infrared (IR) light which is only visible to the camera. If the IR was turned off, the camera would show you it would be pitch dark.

Late answer but the chick was eventually rescued after a bald eagle attacked her when she had fledged. They put her under an X-ray and deemed her unsuitable for release because her injured wing (probably caused by the owl attacks) would never allow her to migrate all the way south like ospreys do. They did try to fix the wing, but it became clear the damage done was permanent, unfortunately. She is still in captivity right now. I believe at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Florida.

Life should not be so hard.(compared to other osprey nest made by humans) The countless tragedies can be avoided if this nest base not set here for some reasons instead of PROTECTION. We wish life should not be this hard, but it is -- in all living creatures. This type of predation happens everywhere whether the home is natural or manmade. If you do not believe me, KZread points you to some where the nests are natural. I even have one that I've recorded.

Jusywho I know raw nature. Sorry I didn't make my comments clear to you--I mean when it compared to other osprey nest under protection of humans. Since the wild life is so hard as we know, It's unnecessary for humans to keep the nest in such a dangerous place.

Nests are put up to deter the birds from building their homes atop electrical poles or place in areas where the birds once habituated but no longer could due to DDT/DDE and are not under human protection. Even if they pulled down this nest, the family most likely will find another location in this area to build as it has a great food resource. We just won't see them lose chicks because their is no cam. The area is becoming a haven for lots of raptors. This nest lost chicks to bald eagles 2 years ago in the day time and I think another year, too. Organizations that put up cams on a nest should only intervene because the object that puts the bird in danger is manmade, i.e. fish hook, plastic twine, fishing wire, and I do not mean the nest platform. Some organizations are forced to intervene because of mass human hysteria watching the cam. Those have to usually get approval from their federal/state government agency or else shut the cams down as it may put the organization in danger.

Jusywho Thank you for sharing. I agree. I object to any human interference unless the species endangered by human causes like DDT or other pesticides.(thus they may need to be conserved/protected) I choose to believe birds(Steve & Rachael) could build a better home by themselves than this platform. The ospreys' well-being is far more important than the opportunity of watching their Live. The camera is an issue needed for further studies/discussions.
