Wow your talk on race is so refreshing. I grew up in the 80s but the same way you did. I didn't pay attention to the race of my friends they were just my friends. I'm really feel sorry for my 13 Year old son that is dealing with a whole different world today for the worse. I just bought your book!!

I just wanted to thank you for speaking (what I think is an obvious) with truth, logic, and empathy. I am happy to say I immediately bought your book and am excited to read it. Thank you for such an engrossing and nuanced conversation. It was a welcome relief from the dogmatic, ideological rants that are so common online. Also, I was highly impressed by Munira. She strikes me as exactly the calibre of person that one would want to vote for to hold office in any capacity.

I wish she would stand in the UK - I guess she is too moderate for the currently very right-wing Tory Party, and too associated with Boris Johnson for Labour if she ever thought of joining them. Perhaps that’s the trouble in both countries: there isn’t enough space for intelligent, thoughtful pluralists any more. (By pluralists I mean those who understand there are many different perspectives on society from which one can choose elements; rather than getting stuck in simplistic binary thinking.)

Hello Brotha, I was introduced you recently and I love how you talk about race in our country. Ive been hoping to eventually find someone who can actually discuss the topic without being pc bc ive been raised by love since the get go. I grew up in South Philly and the Rodney king riots are some of the 1st events i remember having. I don't want to say to much without knowing you even read this. But the only way to get past is how you explained it, obviously i can tell you are black being fair no matter what and also realizing we are on this continent together and if we fully unite i mean all the way unstoppable. People want to be right about the past but give up a future for that.

Enlightening as always, Coleman. You brought up a fascinating side thread about former marxists (I am one) that I hope you will explore more.

What you espouse is how both parties in my generation and that of my parents (I’m 62) in which being ‘colorblind’ wasn’t referring to our eyesight but rather to our hearts. My combat decorated Dad, eventually deceased of wound, said that “There’s no room for bigotry in foxholes and huddles (war and sports).” In my generation we didn’t give a damn about each other’s politics. We voted across the proverbial aisle without a blink. Moreover, as a teacher and coach I’ve witnessed firsthand that our student-athletes don’t give a damn what color the hand might be when we stack our hands one over the other in our huddles. And with our primary school kids they truly don’t care about or ‘see’ color until they’re shown or taught that race separates us. Hence, I just subscribed to your channel after hearing you on the Rogan episode. You’re intellectually objective and courageous morally.

The closest thing to "conservative" art is atelier type schools, where artists study figurative based work. These are schools that don't focus on degrees or identity politics, but rather on skillful drawing and painting, and a love of art history

I've had some disagreements with you, but I really am glad your out there. Your stances are honest and clear. Very refreshing. Thank you.

I am a Muslim in the west and I heartily praise munira and stand with her in condemning "islamism". There is room in western liberal societies for practicing muslims- however, fundamental islamism is simply not compatible with the values that we have all grown to appreciate. Also, totally agree with Coleman that Hamas in power is a major source of suffering of the people of Gaza.

Coleman, the conservative art is in Utah. Utah has an incredible art scene, it started in artists' communes in Alpine. Now many LDS artists are very productive and very well supported by the community. Ironically I am not LDS myself but I have bought so much excellent local art that I have made many friends in that community.

This is fantastic! I totally agree. an interesting thing to consider: imagine a non-asian American being born and growing up in a country like Taiwan. That American taiwanese person would be constantly asked. Why is your Chinese so good? Simply based on the way he or she looks. Despite that person having grown up and gone to school with all of the other Asian Taiwanese people, they are still considered different because of the way they look. That would become very annoying and exhausting and these problems come from the fact that people place so much value and make assumptions based on the way someone looks.

Most regular working class Muslims from my experience just want a regular simple peaceful life like everyone else. Have a job, love their family, and just enjoy life. Unfortunately the bad guys often blackmail the good Muslims with blackmail via threats to their family or fake honor killings to force them to do their political bidding.

I was born in the late 70's, i grew up in a very diverse community, in the early 80's i was about 5 or 6 years old, i was shopping with my mother and i asked her for a black doll, i did not understand why all my dolls were white when not all of us were white. My mom told me to shush and in the early 80's if a parent would ask you to shush you would better do it. Was i being a racist? I probably did not even know what racism is by that age. Was my mom being a racist? I do not think so, she perhaps was just afraid of my comment offending someone. I think most of the issues there are nowadays are cultural and they pass from generation to generation, will that one day fade away? I would like to believe so. (she never gave me a black doll and i wanted it so badly i would have traded all my white dolls for a black one, eventually i had to give up).

This is reminiscent of "I must see someone of my skin color in order to relate to them" It's like a protagonist in a film. Must they necessarily be my skin color in order for me to relate to them? I think not. This is the ideology of DEI and identity politics rearing its ugly head.

Group identity focused clans have yet to realise the inherent racism they are acting out in judging ppl by the colour of their skin etc. If you see a black man/ white man, unless you speak to him , only judging him by his pigmentation it would not tell you; Where his is from, the country, the continent. His language. His likely religion. His culture. Very little. Good ppl imo already instinctively judge ppl on their individual character. I don't know your history and if you think you know someone by some immutable trait you have not experienced life enough to know that thru meeting a myriad of individuals there is every kind of everyone. We should embrace this mixing and diversity of character but it is idiotic to judge by race etc.

We could try to infer from him watching this channel, that he's supporting colorblindness like Coleman. And there's a case to be made that that's racist because it thinks of minorities positions as being 'good enough' to receive just general support. I like both Coleman and Munira . But Coleman please , settlement’s on the West Bank is a major issue . Please do some research on life in the West Bank … There are plenty of people on the right who are very critical of this massacre of civilians not just the left.

When gentiles (especially young gentiles of color and clearly future leaders) show that they have done their homework about Israel/Palestine it literally allows me to sleep at night. Bless you CH and MM!!

Ya know whats funny... the morning of the Brexit vote, pur local shop keeper who is an Iraqi Muslim immigrant, asked me what i was voting. When i told him i really didnt know, he basically gave me a speech that the media would tell you that indigenous Brits would be saying. 'Ya gotta have control of your borders, the housing problem is caused by too much immigration, its known in the middle east that its easy to get into Europe and the UK etc and he even said if we dont leave in 15 years well be getting a million a year in. Looks like even he was underplaying it. 😅 But the people who i found were extremely anti Brexit were muddle class indigenous Brits. The media ... is just.. i dunno. I think they just say what they *want* to be the case.

Because they didn't want to concede any land on principle.

The people don't vote on agreements made with other countries or on how many people illegally enter a country in a year. That doesn't make such events or action undemocratic. Even in a fully democratic country, most things that happen are not controlled by a vote, and leaders once elected, have to take a lot of actions, like agreeing to arrangements with foreign countries, that are not subject to a vote of the people.

Most things should be out of democratic control because most things should happen organically in society.

I agree with almost all of the views presented here. However, I don't agree that voting with the thought in mind to allow more immigrants enter our country is a vote against democracy. My view is to have a path for these immigrants, to have compassion for their phight. This does not mean I want uncontrolled chaos at the border, or for the southern states to take the brunt of the load that it takes to find programs and help for these immigrants. If they do take the brunt, they should be compensated.

The guest is way off base with the comment on unpaid internships. The cost of doing an unpaid internship for a few months is trivial compared to the benefits derived. And -- yes -- even immigrant families can spare a few months of a part-time, entry-level salary. Internships are just another excuse to whine about someone else's advantages. I work in an industry -- definitely not the arts -- in which we used to have college kids in for a few months to learn about what we do. The interns weren't really of much help, but would sometimes do some semi-useful busy-work. Now we are not allowed to have interns unless they get college credit -- which can be difficult to arranged -- so no one benefits but everyone is equal in not learning about the industry. Yay!

I don’t agree at all. Not every person can give up pay for months at a time. Kids with daddy’s Amex certainly can do that. It’s definitely a ridiculous system that favors the rich.

I lost her when she said she was a proud Muslim & that it was a peaceful religion and that the radicalism came in due to the funding from the west. What bollocks. How do you explain the islamization of Spain, Mughal invasion of India, Armenian genocide, islamization of turkey and so much more from Islamic countries. Islam has always been a religion of violence. After all her claims of being a rational thinker, this to me is not entirely “rational” to not acknowledge the truth about the innate nature of Islam & to pin it on the west conveniently. And what does she mean by Muslims being sympathetic to the situation of Palestinians is understandable, even at the cost of what Hamas did? It’s just insane to even make such claims.

The genesis of "identity politics" in the United States involves European Americans, perpetrators and bystanders, and persists. Munira is more balanced than Coleman over Israel/Hamas. He seems to think Israel have the higher moral ground -maybe that's true but he is basing it on some fictions eg only Hamas would target civilians. (!?) He follows the Israel government narrative that always wants to focus on October 7th as if this happened in isolation. Btw I don't defend Hamas at all. I do view them as Islamist terrorists. And I usually agree with Coleman on most issues.

For many years I have read 1 section of the Quran everyday, which means I read the entire Quran every month, both in Arabic and English. I've never come across a verse that says "Fight the Jews". On the other hand, I have ready many verses calling for good relations with "the People of the Book", which are the Jews and Christians. The prophet who mentioned by name the most in the Quran is Moses, peace be upon him. So this is a false narrative any Muslim group has inherent hatred for Jewish people.

I’m a fan Coleman !…JP has some insights to share around the tendency of artists being left-leaning. Has something to do with personality trates, and generally speaking higher levels of openness and creativity correlating less with conservative thinking…Not to say that conservatives can’t be creative or open. But I guess you need these levels to be extremely high to embrace art as your lifestyle. Totally with you on how sad the current sate of the arts is. How does Hamas do anything with blockade? You say it’s complicated as a cop out. All you said mostly is a propaganda spewed by Israel. You need to speak to scholars who are well versed in the topic of Palestine/Israel.

Islamism means an extreme movement/form of religious worship mixing religion/politics etc. The problem is that it gets intentionally mixed up with muslims and islam not the word. It is a problem that islamism does exist just like zealot christians, hindus etc etc.

​​@@PMMagro at the same time it helps to understand that Islam, Christianity etc are not equivalent. They teach very different things and have very different theological traditions. It's worth reading the Quran and Hadith when it comes to their views on Jewish people, bearing in mind that later passages are considered to override or "abrogate" earlier ones according to their scholarship. It soon becomes apparent (if you've also read the Bible) why strictly observant Christians and strictly observant Muslims tend to act differently.
