Vilayat Khan was the God of Sitar. When the Creator asked other sitarists, they probably wanted awards and accolades, but VK wanted only sitar, .. or maybe sitar wanted him !!!

What a performance! Of the three incomparably great sitar players of the 1960s, who were all contemporaries, I always felt that Pandit Ravi Shankar was the great showman, who communicated best with the Western world;Pandit Nikhil Banerjee was the technical perfectionist.Ustad Vilayat Khan had the ability to put an amazing amount of passion and soul into his work so that, when he communicated to his audience they were transported emotionally to another world. I am not comparing one with the other or trying to belittle any of them.I do not have the ability to do so, and as I said, they were all incomparably great.It's just how I remember them.

For me it is hard but Nikhil Banerjee is unparalled. His playing was more hypnotic but as you said hard to compare.

@PhysicsOnLine Actually no, Nikhil Banerjee was quite devotional and spiritual. But the passions and technicalities of Vilayat Khan are what have survived into the 21st century. Look at any good to great sitar player of today, their style of playing and improvisation is the Vilayat khan style. His influence on the Sitar style is SO dominant, it is unbelievable. Almost no one plays like Ravi Shankar. Very few play like NB, but if you take the great to good players of today (Budhaditya Mukherjee, Shahid Parvez, Purbyan Chatterjee, Niladri Kumar, Anupama Bhagwat, etc.) they all sound like Vilayat Khani style to me. A 2nd dominant figure in instrumental Hindustani music is Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia who set the bar for the Bansuri. Vilayat was such a strong force of will that his music has and will survive well into the future.

Ustad Sahib knew the end was near( Phir esa sitar sunnay ko nahi milega). And he was gone in two years.

जहाँ कहीं भी वर्चस्व , , नफरत , घमंडी युद्ध हो रहे हैं , नृत्य , गान का होना जरूरी है ।

Listening to Ustad Vilayat Khan requires a certain level of knowledge of classical music, otherwise one cannot feel the gravity of his recitals.....

It's really sad that in the past five years the viewers of this great performance is only 250 K . It seems to me , many of us are really unable to take the real taste of the music !

During the last century, the only instrumentalists that mattered were Vilayat Khan & Ali Akbar Khan becos their devotion to their instruments was so great that they became part of the instrument itself. The rest were acolytes.

This is a great masterpiece of Indian Classical Music played by the greatest sitar player Ustad Vilayat khan.

Of the triumvirate of sitars, Pt RS was most creative, in his every rendition he tried to impart some unique, new phrase and that was the key of his immense popularity in India. Ustad VK used to understand the s to r of the sitar thoroughly and is incomparable technically till date. His extremely sensitive performances used to appeal to the core of the listeners. Pt NB was different, he used to transcend himself during any rendition a little above the stage along with his devoted audience and usd to travel towards the master of the world, also listening to his calm, non-flamboyant, non-experimenting son. And I must confess, this version is great but in no way the greatest Darbari rendition by Ustadji, because he always was and is still the unsurpassable master of this raga.

I am a great fan of Sitar and heard many maestros playing the instrument. While all of them were great in their own way, Vilayat Khan shaab had different level of peace or bliss in his recitals. Take my revered pranam Ustad Ji.

Wahh! In my opinion there really is no other sitarist able to touch my soul as deeply as Ustad Vilayat Khan. The expressiveness and emotion that he evokes is apparent in just one stroke. You can tell he feels every swara to the depths of his core. Such an inspiration! Such an innovator. And he does the most difficult things with such ease!

I agree but I find Pandit Nikhil Banerjee great too. He died very young compared to Ustad Vilayet Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar. Maybe if he lived longer he could have achieved much more.

Yes both Vilayat and Nikhil are the best but yes Vilayat is the emperor while Nikhil banerji was more is more spiritual but dont forget another great Halim Jaffer Khan
