R.A. Dickey debuted his knuckleball by breaking one of baseball's worst pitching records, giving up an unbelievable six homeruns in one game. Sent to the minors and faced with the failure of his pitching dream, Dickey decided to end his life. He duct taped a hose to his car's exhaust pipe, connected it to the driver's side window, and placed his hand on the ignition. It was about more than his dream failing. It was about the babysitter who molested him as a child, about the man who raped him, his need for cleansing and purpose in life. He had hoped baseball would give him meaning and a way to escape the pain of his past, but all that seemed impossible now. He couldn't see how R.A. Dickey would one day find healing and redemption and success beyond his wildest dreams.

    R. A. Dickey is my favorite Christian this week. I watched Knuckleball and everything he said in that movie was....quotable. I followed the trail to Wikipedia, then to his book on Amazon (Wherever I Wind Up), then to this I Am Second testimony. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our salvation is so mysterious, so wonderful. And R.A.'s testimony is so alike to us who don't have a profound crossover moment. But I love the comparison of God taking away your fingers one by one until He has complete surrender. The allegory with the knuckleball release is so beautiful. We need to release our lives totally to Him and surrender the pathway to Him. If we leave one finger on the ball, it's going to go wild. But in God's sovereignty, He will turn it however He wills.

Your transparency is so touching. Watching you pitch last night in Game 4 for the Jays (against the Texas Rangers who turned you down) i really had no idea who you were, now I feel all the more like I need to cheer for the Jays not just because I live in Toronto and they are essentially my team, but because after all this, you deserve this. You are so much more than your past and it is amazing to see to rise above this in the postseason pitching for a team who hasn't seen the post season in 18 years.

Knuckle balling was a last resort for both Wakefield and Dickey, it was a desperation move. It is not the preferred way to pitch.

Nick Bugbee Go Nick! I started throwing a knuckleball around your age (12-13), I am 34 now and it is the most valuable pitch I have in the adult leagues I play in. You can totally make the majors with that pitch!

Philip paul is true that Wakefield was a failed minor league first baseman that threw the knuckleball as a joke and a coach saw it and made him do it full time and dickey had ucl trouble so he throws it just so he can be in the bigs

There is a movie out that documents all the knucklers called "Knuckleball!". It tells the story of Wakefield and Dickey. Just watched it the other day in Play Movies, also available on DVD. All knucklers should watch it!

    R. A. was the reason why I became a baseball fan living in Toronto, and not because he was an intrigueing Cy Young winning knuckleballer, and these D. A. was, rather because I wanted, even yearned for an athlete to root on for something greater than his talent. I will always root for this man and his family: he's my brother in Christ. No river can take what belongs to God. No monster. Never.

every time my husband has the game on and I see this man I have always said there's something I like about him...didn't know what but a sense of humility was the vibe I got. Now i hear his testimony and understand how that reflects the impression he leaves with me...and my hubby tells me, he's one of the few that still can master the knuckle ball. nice stuff! thank the Lord for all He has done in this mans life...especially for keeping him from taking it and renewing his heart from all the damage that had been done.

She embraced me despite the ugliest things about me."

Many hugs n tears...Some people just don't know how to LOVE, AMEN to you WIFE , to your CHILDREN... God's love is the most purest ....I am grateful to hear your story today, cause as a sexual abuse survivor I cried with you, I know that from a stranger it sounds difficult to hear that, I have also been to that suicidal idealogies, that no matter what we do were under the belief that we are never good enough & that our lives don't matter. We are even under the belief that we couldn't even get our own suicide right.... I have great empathy for you as are putting your faith as the foremost in your life. Your spot on that we are second... I needed to go to the spiritual world to engage in peace as I currently struggle w a multitude of emotions...you save my breath today hearing your story & acknowledging your struggles . May you further receive gods blessings upon you & your family... I also want to thank your wife for not abandoning your family.. My spouses abandoned me, and took my children.. ..Not to go any further.... I have been wronged, i know this matter is in god's hands because he has the final word.... Robert may PEACE be with you & true comfort surround you daily when the moments of the terror, confusionn, hurt, the pain tries to shake you down ...keeping our FAITH....Amen
