Ran this card for 7 years until I was able to get a 3070 and it handled everything I threw at pretty well at least up to triple AAA games from about 2018 onwards. RIP good friend :)

My first GPU when I built my own PC. 3GB's of VRAM was really nice and it kept me going until I got a 980 ti. loved that card.

Hasn't let me down for 8 years straight and counting, hands down one of the best GPUs for the price.

@@Marinalin85 Literally the latest driver available, hasn't given me any problems so far. Tbf Amd drivers are VERY unreliable, they are fine with my GPU but my friends (rightfully) complain about them for so many crashes.

RX 6900 XT in 9 years later will be just like HD 7970 in today.

Stil quite good for gaming

I used this for 5 years from 2013 - 2018. Only thing that really held it back was the frame buffer of 3GB. If it had 6GB it would have been very usable even today.

Been using this card since it came out it hasn't ever let me down, when you think that its now 10 years old. It's done me wonders truly the best value card I have ever owned, and only now am I looking to replace. Good quality, older cards can still punch above there weight. Don't be afraid of them; especially when you can now get a used ASUS R9 280X for £60 on eBay. I love this card so much, that when I replace; I will hold on to it. I may even frame it and hang it on my wall as a memorial to how great she was....

Got this as a stop gap. 60 bucks even in this last year gpu price madness. 1130 / 1600 stable with 1.14v and tighter mem timings. Just drop AA altogheter, some tweaks here and there and thats it. And I never used with TDP over 200w (usually 180w it´s fine). Epic card. Decemeber will be 10 years since official launch of the 7970.

Still have this card in my old pc running two of them on sli. And the frame rate still is high considering how old the card is . It performs the same as my 1080ti on some games tho my 1080ti runs at 1440p while this card runs at 1080p

you can always check the thermal paste sometimes it gets crusty after x amount of time.

I ended up taking apart the gpu to discover the thermal paste had completely dried out. After cleaning the gpu and reapplying thermal paste I now get under 70 degrees with only 50% fans. The next thing I’m trying to figure out is why I can’t overclock my ram without games crashing. It’s 3200mhz, and I overclocked it to 3000 because 3200 caused the games to crash basically every time, but they still crash at 3000 and even at 2800. I ended up having to keep it at auto to play games, which isn’t too bad. I’m assuming it’s like this because I got cheap ram. It’s 16gb

Hello, can I ask a question, I am about to buy exactly this graph (they say it is better than the 1050 ti) and much more economical. Now, I looked at AMD to install the drivers and only this one for windows 10 32bit is not available for 64. Does that influence the performance or does not affect at all? Please I need an answer because I am tired of searching and nobody explains it.

If i were on a tight budget i'd go for a r5 5500 and at least a second hand 6600xt or even a rx580 8gb. The 2600 is pretty old and the r9 280x consumes a lot of power for the performance it offers, that is if you can find one in good condition with a reasonable price to begin with.

For gta 5 not playing ?

Also keep in mind this is the same gpu as the HD 7970, just rebranded as an r9 2 years later. The HD 7970 came out in 2011.... Waaaay ahead of its time

Im sorry but what's the point in showing mostly low settings. It'd be interesting to see the card performing either only at high settings or do a comparison between low and high. Ofc on low settings you can pretty much play anything still. But what's really the point.

Bcuz 280x can barely handle high settings on modern AAA games since it's 7 year old card. If you really want to suggest that when the OP has older GPUs at low settings to benchmark, then VRAM limit and lag exists

yes its the same card to a T even uses the same board and model numbers so much so you can crossfire them like i do (HD7970+R9 280x) also the 280 none x is the same as the HD7950

RDR2 looks a lot better with 1680x1050 and mid textures on this card, that´s how I play.

In this era of GPU shortages, I believe someone might need to try it. Especially if their more modern GPU fails and they have to dig into the parts bin.
