The R5C is a cool camera, but not sure that I agree that more resolution and detail = a "better" image. I'd take dynamic range over those things any day.

idk. the video I've seen of the R5c looks gorgeous... maybe the C70 can look better in some extreme cases but it's not a particularly great low light camera and it does look less detailed compared to the R5c.

I agree. Everyone keeps harping on sharpness but that's what makes the image look more 'video' as opposed to filmic or soft.

How can you compare these two cameras without talking about the DGO sensor? Sharpness doesn’t equal quality. I used the C70 for a day of pickup shots for my film. The footage looks like it came out of an Arri. Truly cinematic.

The C70 IQ is cinematic, the R5C looks like the other mirrorless Canons. Better IQ is not made up of sharpness and detail. To state with such an absolute and simple word that the R5C image quality is 'better' seems profoundly misleading to me. I'm using the R3 and the C70. The C70 has an image that is just magnificent. The R3 is, like all the mirrorless, really good, but not in the same league.

Exactly this. Yes the R3 and r5c are Sharper but they have that mirrorless look ( harsh highlight roll of, sharper files but without textures...) If your serious about video the c70 is the better buy.

I don't know if I would say "if you're serious about video...". I think we as filmmakers produce art. We tell stories. We give prospective. How we do that, the methods we use, the tools, that can and should be different from person to person. That's how this industry & the stories/art we create evolve.

Honestly, I think nearly all of the "cons" of either tools can be mitigated or resolved .... those that can't be: do you need more dynamic range? C70. Do you want amazing stills in one package? R5C ... Do you need 8K or 6K? R5C ... Do you want 4K Raw? C70. Do you want a flexible form factor from SUPER small to as big rig as you wanna flex? R5C ... Do you want the best in camera audio/inputs? C70. Do you want FF without a speedbooster? R5C. Do you want as sharp as you can get in camera? R5C. Do you want better autofocus? R5C. Again everything else IMO is mostly if not entirely resolvable, ESPECIALLY the R5C battery (get a small 13500mAh you can mount or put in your pocket). For me, I need the best true HYBRID possible AND the ability to go super small/incognito, so C70 isn't even an option. If I didn't need a hybrid and a small as possible minimalist setup at times, I'd get a C70 in a heartbeat. Good luck!

Great video. As someone that has extensively used the C300 Mk III as my workhorse, I think the C70 makes more sense to me. Ive rented the C70 as a B-cam many times. Im at the point where I think Im going to invest in the C70 as my regular B-Cam. Same sensor as the C300 mk III and now it can shoot RAW. Both cams just cut together so well. Id be interested in trying the R5C! It'd probably be a better gimbal cam due to the smaller form factor.

  • @erikpaulpictures

Literally the video I’ve been waiting to see. You touched on a number of types of film making and rigging situations but if you were looking specifically at narrative film making (micro films, short films, etc) and not doc work or studio work necessarily, which would you say has the advantage? It seems like the added image quality, depth of field possibilities, and full frame image for lens choices might give the R5C the edge… what are your thoughts on that?

Great Video! Loved your analogy between zoom and prime lenses, but also I feel like it can go both ways. You stated that the C70 is like a zoom and is flexible in different shooting environments whereas the R5 C is a prime and will get the maximum amount of quality, but personally, my perspective is the opposite where I think the C70 is a prime since it's suited for video and not going to have issues in the way it performs, but of course, it's not as flexible as the R5 C to be able to do multiple things between high-quality codecs and still capabilities like a zoom lens, but also the R5 C isn't perfect in its categories since for video, needing things like internal nds and xlr, and in photo not having IBIS to help in handheld with certain lenses. Overall, neither of these cameras are perfect, nor do I suspect a perfect camera to exist since by the time a camera comes out with the features we want, there will be newer features available that users and consumers will be greedy for. But am grateful that we have options like the C70 and R5 C! Absolutely loving my R5 C too, has it's shortcomings too like battery life, but there are always workarounds like an external portable charger to help the issue :) Edit: Also wanted to add for those looking between the C70 and R5 C, if you're someone who is solely doing video, already owns high-quality EF glass, not really planning to opt for RF, and wants to stick with SD/Not planning to invest in CFExpress, the C70 will be a great choice since by getting the 0.71x adapter, it will help with an extra stop of light and be able to somewhat reproduce a full-frame look. However, if you're planning to invest in RF glass/CFExpress media or already own them, then the R5 C will be a great option, which is why I personally went with the R5 C over the C70.

  • @npmeilleur

Agreed, I thought the C70 would be the "prime" since it excels in all things video, whereas the R5C is good at video and photo, with many drawbacks and inconveniences for video.

IBIS is a great feature to have but it's not an end all be all. If your photography is mainly people, IBIS doesn't help much because people move. IBIS does not help with a person that is moving. Ask a person to stay still with a shutter speed of 1/20. Let me know how that goes. I do love the IBIS in my R5 but it's only truly useful in dark situations with environments. I can certainly use images of people with slow shutter speed and IBIS, but not for any kind of portfolio level photography.

@@onlysublime 100%! Personally for me I don't need IBIS since I'm mainly a videographer and don't really take much photos, reason I brought it up is since Canon markets the camera still to hybrid shooters rather than solely videographers, it will still have it's flaws in certain aspects unlike the C70 which has been known to be a pure cinema camera and performs the way it should and is not trying to be anything more than that. Just like how the R5 was also heavily marketed to filmmakers, but making their features of 4K 120 and 8K as novelty features. Again both cameras are incredible and glad they exist, really just depends on the ecosystem you're already in and accessories which will make the decision easier.

I found your comparison a bit confusing... I understand for a complete solo shooter, having internal ND, and dedicated XLR audio input could simplify the workflow. However, after using the C70 and finding it so much bigger and heavier when compared to the R5, it draws me closer to wanting to use the R5C instead for much of the work I do. I found @Henry Ortlip's comment about using external power during those stationary corporate projects the way forward to overcome the small battery limitation found on the R5C. Everything else about this camera surely would bring better convenience to the workflow for any solo filmmaker/content creator out there, as a zoom lens would for a lot of the fast paste situations. My thoughts are mainly from the size perceptive of the camera. The image quality on both is excellent. Interested to know your thoughts and anyone else's in the comments.

I work with a added Powerbank 27'000mAh and the inserted battery on a R5C 2'170, so battery life is no issue for me and it has the advantage of 8K RAW LT 60fps what is now my standard format. My issue is the missing animal-AF in video. I hope canon will add soon a firmware with this upgrade for all the Canon cinema cameras. The DR of the R5C is not bad and 80% of my videos don't need a DR of a C70, but I guess 20% of them would take a benefit from 16steps DR, so for most of what I shoot, the IQ of a R5C will be better than from a C70.
