It doesn't look any different than normal flying, except for the last part before the flare. I thought autos were a very dramatic drop

They are if you don't do it well. I had it shown by an inexperienced instructor and it was the scariest experience in my life. I had it then demonstrated by someone with tons of experience and it felt like a non-event.

in the case that you are going long it reduces groundspeed while maintaining a 65 kt attitude
