Most Realistic Helicopter in MSFS! Cowan Simulations Robinson R22 | Real Helicopter Pilot Plays MSFS

Ойындар

Cowan Simulations Robinson R22 Beta II V1.0 in Microsoft Flight Simulator! This may be the most realistic helicopter yet! Autorotations and rotor rpm recovery are possible with the native flight model. Come take a few circuits with me as I give my initial impressions of Cowansims latest release.

    If it’s off, your engine and rotor rpm won’t be automatically managed. It does work. If you’re just cruising along you won’t notice much change in rpm, but if you are maneuvering, you’ll see the rpm fluctuate out of the green arcs and you’ll have to manage the throttle manually to get them back in the green.

  • @Belatu42

    @Belatu42

    2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback! The R66 is going to feel heavier, more stable and more powerful. They “should” both trim for your joystick about the same, but the R66 being more stable should be easier. I don’t have a center spring joystick so I don’t use trim in the sim.

    Just got this, its so nice to fly. I am afraid not as good as you though. I can fly RC helicopters, nitro or electric no probs but these are a different beast. I would like to ask a question if i may. When flying this or any helicopter like this one, when i make a turn, either a steep or slow turn, do you use the rudder also with the cyclic or just the cyclic. For me when i put a bunch of rudder in with the cyclic the Heli seems to snap. If i just use the cyclic it seems smoother in the turns but takes longer to get around. I hope you understand what i mean. I was trying to watch your rudder movements but couldn't quite see the operation.

  • @Belatu42

    @Belatu42

    29 күн бұрын

    Thanks! Most of my time is in the 22. You don’t coordinate your turns with the pedal like you do in fixed wing or Rc helis. It’s an anti-torque rotor. You mostly use it for heading changes in a hover and to counter changes in torque or collective. With rotorcraft, the lift and thrust both come from the rotor.

The R22 is very good and realistic, but may be a bit of a handful for a first heli. I keep my curves full linear with the PFT Puma. It feels pretty close to the real throws, just missing the tactile feedback. The governor is another issue in MSFS. It’s hard to get it to “let go” of the throttle. For now I turn off the governor for auto practice. Hopefully it gets improved. I’ve had success doing autos with it on, but it’s not consistent.

    Some things can be overlooked such as external bits and bobs but I would have thought that simulating the blades spinning only once the clutch is engaged would be a biggie and the governor differences/engine rpm (unless that was your throttle issue) as well is a bit disappointing to hear. I am not a helicopter pilot but I like to think that if I had to fly the real thing then ideally I wouldn't be seeing any obvious differences in the actual mechanical/physical operational reality. I mean they must have used a least one R44 experienced pilot surely to test the sim modelling so didn't that person at least think to say "hang on why are those blades rotating when I haven't engaged the clutch ?". Thanks for the great review. I don't have such an issue with the choice of music - my only comment is I like to hear the engine actually start up without any music distraction. Good to hear that the handling is accurate though and for that reason and your recommendation I am sure I'll be adding it to my collection. Cheers !

    the blades don't spin until i engage the clutch with my install, the flight model like all cowinsim models i have flown, you hardly need any anti torque pedal use, very very little in all phases of flight. all assists off and modern flight models.

  • @vinnydiehl8223

    @vinnydiehl8223

    2 ай бұрын

    I fly R22s IRL, when the clutch is properly tensioned the blades start to turn as soon as the engine starts cranking, and will slowly spin until the clutch is engaged, then they start to speed up. What does happen is as you get into the warmer months, the belts expand and sit looser on the sheaves, so they don’t start turning until you hit the clutch. It’s no big deal as long as you have movement within 5 seconds, but we adjust the clutch with the seasons to keep a little bit of tension on them (belt should only deflect an inch and a half when you press it inward, if you don’t have blade movement on startup it’s definitely looser than this).

  • @Belatu42

    @Belatu42

    2 ай бұрын

    I’ll have to look into this further. In FlightswithJoel’s video, I noticed that the blades started to spin, but then stopped when he started it but hadn’t engaged the clutch. In the real thing, you don’t idle the engine with the clutch disengaged. You flip the alternator and clutch switch as soon as it starts and has a good oil pressure reading. It happens fast. The pedal requirement is another topic. The Cowansim R66 does it better.

  • @Belatu42

    @Belatu42

    2 ай бұрын

    I’ve not had the same experience with the R22 that I fly. With the belts tensioned properly, one knuckle deflection, or about 1-1/2”, the blades don’t turn on startup. I did have one flight where the belts were tensioned to tight and the blades did spin while starting, and it was a bitch to get it started that day.

    @@Belatu42 Interesting. Was it very cold out? It's always pretty warm where I live, even in the winter (we don't even have primers installed, just a quick throttle twist on the first startup of the day), so maybe we can get away with keeping them tighter. I'll have to ask the A&Ps about it.

I haven’t spent enough time with this one yet, but aside from the sim differences, they both feel pretty similar to the real thing with my control setup. I love my CowanSim B206 (whether it is strictly accurate or not) but I have to say that the promise of updates many and often for the 500E/B222 and the 206 are just not many or often enough. I can accept that it is hard work for a small company but all of the CowanSim products have had many similar issues, including the ridiculous sound disturbances that are linked to multiplayer that have been present for well over a year now. Add to that water droplets appearing on the inside of the cockpit gauges in rain conditions in anything over the lowest setting for windshield detail, missing external nav lights, unreadable GPS displays that are too dim on all of the recent updates...and you begin to see a pattern. Priority is being diverted to new aircraft before fixing existing ones. Based on forum posts, I would say a lot of the loyal customers of CowanSim are more than frustrated by this trend. They (and I) have invested a lot of money and that should count for more than it seems to. I would reluctantly agree, that I am not going to spend any more on CS products either unless I see that things are changing.
