R1Liz - Iceland Price Breakdown

Sorry this is a little later than expected! Here's my recount of how much I spent on my last trip with the S1000RR to Iceland.
£2,200(ish) for 21 days of travel including 8 days on Iceland. It doesn't seem like much and I do feel like I spent a lot more, but the numbers apparently don't lie. Not the most inspiring information - I ate and did what I wanted and didn't do much to save money while I was away. I don't think any efforts to be frugal would have made a huge difference and as always - you might as well enjoy the experience and if that means accidentally spending £20 on a sandwich - so be it.
I'm currently turning over ideas for my next adventure, this will result in an impatient and spontaneous booking made on the DFDS site in the next few weeks followed probably by a preparation video. I'm getting pre-excited although as I write this I'm still getting over a really rubbish week of Covid (or flu, nobody knows...).
Before I can commit any real energy to that, I have a couple of things happening over the next few weeks that I think you'll enjoy, including some new bikes and some more Svarty bullying.

There's absolutely no need to be ashamed about spending money on food! Especially on food which is good and you don't normally eat in your home country. In my opinion great food is in very important part of the journey and the experience of the trip.

I love food and my standards are not high 😂 I’m particularly happy about the fish based meals I had which I’d never find at home - £20 for soup and bottomless bread is great for me, £20 for a sandwich not so much 😂

Great and insightful video. I know money conversion can always be a big pain. So I usually carry my monzo card when I am travelling as it offers great exchange rate and I don;t have to get the money converted as well. As I get notifications instantly I get to know how much money I am spending.

Glad you enjoyed it! I’m very old fashioned and fearful of change so although I know there are better banking tools out there, I quite enjoy putting up with the account my parents set up for me many many years ago, I don’t notice exchange charges because I simply avoid looking 😅

Without sounding like a dick, how do you afford/have time for constant trips? Judging by the subscriber count you wouldn't get paid enough from KZread?

You did well I think. I spent more in Europe and my Ferries were a lot cheaper. To be honest I spent more this year in Europe than I did in Scandinavia last year and travelled less miles. The cost was down to more Hotels in the heatwave of Greece and Italy.

Yes, so the prices are for a good reason. I watched a lady try to eat two mangoes that she’d just bought from the grocery store and neither looked good at all - one went straight in the bin, they’re paying so much for fresh fruit and it’s not even good 😖

I think that's pretty good value to be honest. I think you made all the right choices, definitely a good idea not to camp out of season, you ate well, had good comfortable, warm, dry accommodation and you had a great time. I think I'd have kept the magnet for myself at £15 as a reminder 🤣

I did an ok job! And I know for next time. I probably could have spent more nights in the cheaper places and traveled bigger distances between them, spending whole days thoroughly exploring one area. Hopefully there’ll be a next time! The magnet was some kind of felted sheep thing and it had a certain persons name on it, they appreciated it very much so it’s not all bad

@@R1_Liz I disagree, you didn't overspend on accommodation (IMO) You had one night where you 'treated yourself' to a place you really liked the look of, absolutely nothing wrong with that! One of the worse things you can do (apart from 'transit' miles to get there) is try to ride too many miles in a day. If a 'certain person' appreciates a present, it's never 'too expensive'. 👍

On the boat food topic, would they have said anything if you had stashed some food from the buffet for later? I did that when I travelled for work as the hotel breakfast bars usually had pastries and things which were portable and lasted most of the day in a small tupperware container. Also, if you paid that much for the food, might as well get your money’s worth right?

  • @R1_Liz

I did that every day with the breakfast buffet - made sandwiches and hid them in my backpack for lunch 😂 I don’t think they’d stop you but you feel like you shouldn’t

@@R1_Liz nice work! That's like if you'd accidentally plated on more than you could eat and decided to put it in a doggy bag instead of throwing it out right? As long as you weren't being silly about it and it was around what you had already paid in the first place.

Hi Liz, Hope you're feeling better, I guess you are since you have put out this video. Are Icelandic people slim as they can't afford to eat or wealthy like you 😂 (only joking) . R1's are posh telling you when it's due a service, my 22 year old yamaha xj600s diversion I have to look at the mileage counter and see I've done 4,000 miles and know it's time for one 😂. But I love it and that's what counts. Take care of yourself, Best wishes Roy 👍

I’m almost back to normal! It’s dragged on for nearly 2 weeks 🤦‍♀️thank you for the well wishes. Everyone I saw in Iceland was very healthy looking, I think the food there is good - no junk food! I read something about the last McDonald’s closing down there a few years ago and someone preserved the last ever McDonald’s burger to demonstrate how terrible it is. My RR knows exactly what it wants when it wants and I cannot get away with ignoring it, which is good because my older bikes would suffer some serious neglect 😥
