r/Talesfromtechsupport I Helped My Stupid Boss Fire Himself

Комедия

r/Talesfromtechsupport In today's episode, the new boss in an IT department decides that he's the most important person there, so he literally steals another worker's email. Unfortunately for Mr. Boss, this new email address gets Very Important emails that must be addressed immediately. The worker tries to warn his boss about these emails, but the boss ignores him. Eventually, the inevitable happens and the company gets into huge trouble because somebody was ignoring those Very Important emails. Since the stupid boss is the one who controls the email account, he's the guy who gets in trouble!

If I was the social media manager in that first story I would be looking for a different job by now. If they keep forgetting you work there eventually they're gonna forget to sign your paycheck. Good on that IT Guy for handling it well, never mess with the IT Guy.

If a company is big enough for this to happen, that manager is probably not the one signing the paychecks, but yeah, having a marketing director that does not understand the importance of social media is probably not good for the company either.

Better yet, malicious compliance. Keep "working" (collecting a paycheck), check your contract about working second jobs, and if it's allowed, get a second job and just put your full attention into the second job. She obviously won't be missed if her manager keeps forgetting she works there.

Corporate is a wild zoo with people who have no idea who's under them. I worked for an international corporation, where I was eventually answerable to the CEO because they kept terminating my bosses. He had no idea what I did for the company, laid me off, and then, when I got rehired, I had to go through some garbage new hire lunch where I told them what I was, and he kept asking are you sure that's what you were...dude...I answered directly to you...they think they're above the plebs they work over. Took everything in me to not verbally rip him apart during that meeting, especially since I didn't want to go.

I worked just below a "Board" level guy. We had a contract with money owed to a supplier since even before I joined. Small money, but particularly big issue because they provided the backbone IT system of the company centralized capacity (i.e. production rates) data. (Yes ....) I pulled everything together and got all approved and packaged and everybody was happy, one full year of work for the supplier not to "unplug and sue" us, and for our purchasing processes to prepare the money. only one last approval signature to get (of course, it was a massive process, because of the criticality of the system... LOL) I had sometimes lunches with this person and updated him 2ce a month on the issue. The very day I left ( better opportunity, in a better company with better mindset), with the approval process pending for 2 months already on his dashboard, the man called me "yeah I saw your XXX€ CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) (a value lesser than 2 months of my own salary actually, to tell you how small the expense was for MY company at the time) for that title, I don't remember why it is for, I refused the payment and cancelled the whole filing." (i.e. full process to be re-made by the next guy) "Just .... Hold on. Sorry. But ... Wait ... What ?" I called my counterparts on supplier side, explained what just happened, and packed for home even before lunch time. All my other tasks were closed, and once this system was down I had nothing left to fill my last afternoon of work. In Corporate, these guys only remember the names of the people they need to lick the asses of. They are not interested in anyone or anything else. Neither do they understand anything of the companies for which they are the "big cats" Industrial means, technical means, real world assets, physical value of materials / machines / tools, the reality of production and delivery. So do not expect them to remember a name or function of anyone at their own level, and certainly not just below or further below ;) If you ever have the choice between Big Corpo or Small / Family business, even if the money is 30%less for 40% more real work, go for small business, your happiness will be higher by 10000% ;)

depending on the size of the business, directors could be managing literally thousands of employees below them, it's impossible for anybody to remember everybody who works for them in that type of situation. The bit that makes no sense here however is that he has been repeatedly told that the company has a person who manages the corp's image on these social media platforms and he didn't consider what that meant. Generally speaking, the people at the top are more likely to know who you are in a small or medium sized business, since those will have less total employees than a single director might have to manage in a large corporation. I currently work for a very large corporations and never even met some of the directors up the chain, let alone any member of the board. Whereas the company I worked for before, I had spoken to most of the board at some point and knew most of the managers, because it was a much smaller company. As it started getting larger there were some I didn't know but not many.

I agree. Also, that must've been so embarrassing for the boss. I should know, because I have had similar stuff happen to me. My job does require a bit of technical know-how, but I still have dumb moments. Wondering why my devices aren't charging even though they are plugged into the charger? Well, maybe you need to make sure that the electrical socket is actually working. Can't find that one file? Turns out you were looking in the folder for last year instead of this year. Certain device doesn't work anymore? Well, that's because it is set to automatically turn off after a while (a warmth pad/pillow that you can wrap around your stomach and back, control the heat of with the attached controller and that you have to put in the electrical socket). Keep in mind, this was not me mocking my coworkers for being dumb. This was me being the dumb one and being embarrassed about the silly mistakes I made. Mistakes we can all laugh about. I remember one time where I had to 3d print something and turned on the printer. Set everything up and let it do its thing. Went to check on something else and returned when I heard beeping from the printer, signalling it was done. Imagine my confusion when the printer had made nothing. Turns out I didn't properly insert the filament the printer works with and so it had slipped out, causing nothing to be extruded. I had not gotten much sleep the previous night. Fixed it before the others noticed the dumb mistake I made.

I had this one lady absolutely livid that a tech ruined her internet when they came out to fix the phone... you could hear the guilt in her voice when she realized the issue was ... she accidently turned off the wifi switch on her laptop. When you absolutely blow up at every little thing, it makes it memorable, which coupled with the fact you just annoyed the people you are talking to... is very likely for the story to spread. All those people that did equally bad things but was super nice about it? couldn't tell you. I can't remember any of them.

I couldn't imagine how long it would take to correctly change something like that in any program of measurable size... and even then it's possible you miss one, and make things worse. for the record: this is why you never hard code something like that. You always throw it in a variable that can be called, so all you have to do is change the variable once, not the email itself in all the places that refers to it. that being said... one could say it definitely gave him job security though... so...

#2 story is so true. Management types are usually the brashest personalities with the most fragile egos. At my old job I wasn't even IT, I was a lowly production supervisor, but my technical knowledge of the operation often required that I attend meetings in the morning even though my job was at night, so I was given the burden of a laptop that I had to use to attend meetings virtually and also use at night during production so that I wouldn't just be in the office filling reports, instead I was supposed to be doing my office work and production work at the same time. So, as you would expect, this didn't sit well with my "senior supervisor". The guy had tenure and had carried the department a long time, yes, but he was a dinosaur that found it impossible to let go of paper print outs. He didn't say it outright, but I could tell he was seething about the laptop I got (which again, was a burden to me, I have my own computers and laptops, several in fact, but because I like that kind of stuff and I don't mix business and pleasure, a work laptop, for those of us that have got one, is a burden). He wouldn't express this discontent verbally to me, but he would ask me every now and then "how's the laptop?" Or, "where's your laptop?", Plus I heard from another employee he did mention at some point that he didn't even know why I got one. Couple months go by and I revert to my old ways, do my work in my office computer, and I haven't used the laptop in a month. I get contacted from IT asking to please turn on the laptop because it hasn't run updates in a month, so I comply, mentioning that I really don't use it anymore. A week goes by and my "senior supervisor" comes in saying "IT said you're not using your laptop anymore so leave it on my desk next chance you get". I gladly comply, take a picture of the returned items, which I then sent to IT and they confirm return, and rejoice at the freedom. Fast forward a year later, the laptop has been handed to my "senior supervisor" for about a year now, and it had been sitting there, inside it's laptop bag, unused all that time. He really had no use for it. I'm still wondering why IT never pestered him about updates but who cares. It's just funny. That was my old job, my new one is just as bad. It's a call center and some items, like laptops and wireless headsets, are seen by some as status symbols, and, again seeing the ones with fragile egos seethe is gold.

That was something I fought for decades as a developer. Internal stakeholders would ask for things, and I would ask clarifying questions. Their ensuing frustration would make it clear that they didn't want to think about it beyond making the initial, far-too-general request. It gave me opportunituies to develop really good relationships with clients, and to work on diplomacy. The other issue I fought was people thinking that they had to describe the details of implementation. Some would try to go really deep, and I appreciated the effort, but the business case and the ask were lost in the details, so we'd have to back up do it again. I enjoyed collaborating on writing specifications with willing and engaged stakeholders. It generated excitement, purpose, and great results.

I've told this story in a few different places on the internet, but I used to be a Digital Media Specialist. I would do things like make sure documents were compliant with disability assistance devices, closed captioning, edit and proof ebooks, fix PDFs bunged up by executives, audio and video mastering, photo manipulation, some social media marketing, and a little graphic design and web development; basically they needed a team but was only willing to hire one person, me. I was constantly over-worked and underpaid. Sadly, my desk was kinda close to IT so all of the upper management at the company assumed I was IT as well. They would ask me to help with little things here and there; unlock a PDF, change a png to a jpeg, stuff any moderately tech literate child could do, so I figured I'd help out. That is until one day. I get a phone call to my desk from the Media Director. She is in charge of what we put out but really just to collect a good salary and hire her daughter to browse Facebook and Twitter all day. The Director had a request for me to install some software for her since she would be out of the office and needed it "by the time she landed". Now, she does a lot of travel so I figured she was coming in to the office today and started to go over the details. "I need Windows Movie Maker installed on my laptop right away. I could do it myself, but I'm busy right now with calls I need to make." Alright, easy enough. I make my way over to her office, ask her assistant to get me her laptop and then it starts to go down hill. I'm informed that the Director has her laptop with her, in a plane, and she's flying OUT off the country, for vacation, for 2 weeks. And on top of all that, she specifically asked for Windows Movie Maker and I found out that her "laptop" was an Ipad with a keyboard attachment. All I could do at that point was ask her in the most gentle way I could to put in an IT ticket and let real IT deal with it. I ended up getting called into a meeting a few days later with a write up over not being a team player. Because I literally couldn't do something that wasn't my job in the first place. Eventually, I had a health scare that hospitalized me for a month, so they gave me 5x the work load of anyone else against doctors orders, changed deadlines from a week out to the next morning outside of office hours, and my boss failed to turn over files to the client on more than one occasion when she got them from me well in advance. They made their excuses to fire me and they did.

The head of IT, unlike the dingbat in this story, had a very good working knowledge of all IT systems maintained by the company. The CIO did strategic planning of enterprise technology and recommended large acqusitions to keep the company as competitive as possible. My friend Tony called me and said that he put a diskette into the floppy drive and it had disappeared. That was obviously a crazy and impossible thing to happen so I walked over there to see what was what. It turns out Tony had missed the disk slot entirely and had instead inserted it in between the disk drive and the CD-ROM drive. Both of us found this to be hilarious and Tony had no problem becoming a legend because he had a great sense of humor.

I think more-so the world in it's entirety would do well with forcing retirement... Politicians that are out of touch with reality. Managers that don't understand anything about modern tech, economics and business. 90 y/o people working in physical fields because they refuse to stop, but just make literally everything take longer because they can't actually do anything. There's a couple fields where it's not "almost guaranteed to be a negative", but like... I'd honestly probably argue that even stuff like education generally suffers immensely from having people that straight up don't know most modern knowledge teaching people stuff, and especially from having people that refuse to take structural changes seriously and thus leave us with all of these outdated schools that result in people that literally can't even spell their own name getting degrees because otherwise they'd have a 90% failure rate.

Swiping the screen with a cleaning cloth with your right hand clockwise you moved both controls to minimum. So when a lawyer's secretary called me because her terminal "didn't work" I asked if she already checked theise controls. Skipping the next insulting minutes on the phone I finally got the their office. Performing the same swiping motion counterclockwise with the left hand the screen lightens up the same speed as her face turning purple red.😈 Stating that turning the brightness control is not part of the service contract she signed the chargeable work order without contradiction...

I looked to the other SysAdmin. He looked me. Malicious Compliance time. I included him in the list to receive a copy. These e-mails was generated at night by a dozen automated jobs in a dozen Unix Servers. It was backup report, security report, system report etc. I knew what to look for in each report type, so I was able to se the important items in seconds in each one. Two weeks later the IT manager tells me "I am receiving a lot of e-mails that makes no sense.". Minutes after this I removed him from the list to receive a copy.

That first one about blocking facebook for all the company employees is THE EPITOME of corporate hypocracy. Everyone else at the company MUST be blocked so they do not spend company time on social media, but the CEO and the higher ups? Oh no, they are totally fine using social media when they should rightfully be DOING THE JOBS TOO. If they are concerned about employees spending time on social media then they should also not be spending company time there. I would have just casually called them all out and stated that "if you want this policy to be effective for the company, the staff to respect you and work hard, and to have this policy be in effect, every employee must be bound to it and the rules stated. No exceptions should be tolerated, else an exception MUST be made for ALL employees to mitigate any chance of discrimination." They want facebook banned on company time, they have to share that ban, or else they are being hypocrites and discriminating against the staff.
