r/Talesfromtechsupport Can You Fix It?

Комедия

r/Talesfromtechsupport Are you ready for stupid end users and moronic bosses? In today's episode, a company thinks they can trick their team of IT workers into working free overtime in a state where free overtime is strictly illegal. The IT workers happily put in the hours, log how much time they work, and then wait for the perfect moment to file a group lawsuit against their employers and sue them for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Don't mess with the IT people!

A year ago during the beginning of the pandemic and the mask mandates in our state, I worked in a literal mom and pop liquor store. We had these 2 women come in from out of town, one of them didn't have a mask, and it was actually her friend before me or the other employee could say anything told her she needed to put a mask on. She put one on, but remarked "I'll do it, but they can't make us put a mask on, for all they know I might have an exemption". I laughed and said "actually, I can make you put a mask on, if you have a medical condition, our accommodations are either curbside service, or ordering online and picking up your order, CURBSIDE". She got kinda snooty about it. While she was walking around the store, the husband owner (like I said, literal mom and pop shop) came down out of his office. And I told him the story, hes a huge guy, usually quite jovial in his 50s, but I've seen him mad, and he can be scary especially if you don't know him. He bellowed out "Where is that bitch? This is my effing store, if I demand all customers wear a pink tutu, they'll damn well do it or they'll get the hell out of my store!". That chick did not say utter another word the whole time she was in there. BTW. another funny maskhole story I had working there, some lady tried to say she didn't have to wear a mask because she had asthma and that was an exemption. I also have asthma, VERY bad asthma..., I pulled out my rescue inhaler, my steroid inhaler and my epipen from my pocket and set them on the counter. Asked her where hers were, she said "I don't have them with me". I said, "then your asthma isn't bad enough that you can't wear a mask for the 5 or 10 minutes you're in here".

People like that have infuriated me this whole time. I have PTSD, and having my face covered with anything is a trigger. I found this out the first time I had to have surgery when the anesthesiologist commented about how my numbers started going off the chart as soon as he put the oxygen mask on me. Despite me doing my level best to stay as calm as possible and knowing that nothing was restricting my breathing, he had to take the mask off me, wait for me to calm down, then put me under before putting the mask back on me. Long story short, I can NOT wear a mask. What have I done since the beginning? Sat at home, shopped online, and waited. The ONLY place I've gone has been my local gaming store where I know the owner. I went to the window to make goofy faces at him as a way to say 'hi' while my roommate went in to get what we wanted, and he waved me in since there was nobody else in the store. So we've had an agreement that if he lets me in when I take my roommate, I'll go to the back where there's not much product for customers to look at when other customers enter the store, and if more than a couple people come in I'll go wait in the car for my roommate. It's been a BIG help in the effort to not go absolutely mad being locked up at home while I wait for it to be safe for everyone to go out. Yes, I've gotten the vaccine (I got it fairly early due to being high risk), and yes I'm still staying home. And I'll continue to stay home until the end of the lockdown, and even then I'll only go to a select few places until the CDC says it's safe. I miss picking out my own produce....

I'm sure your problems with a mask and mine are different types of PTSD. Long and short of it, my abuser growing up would cover my face with her hand and squeeze down on my face. I cannot stand having things close to my face for long it puts me into a panicked state. And am sort of sensitive to things being near me. But I worked at a warehouse and explained it to my bosses. They told me flat out. That as long as I was by myself in an aisle and no one was around that I didn't need a mask. Why? I spend about an hour of my 8 hour shift actually near other employees. So yeah. Sometimes people need to understand that it might not be a medical reason for something. I could have been fired for it. But I'm sure my bosses explained why they gave me that exception. Do you really want someone pulling down a nearly 5 ton pallet of crap about to collapse from being panicked by a stupid mask?

The owner of the company in the first story is freakin’ AWESOME! I wish more bosses/managers/supervisors had that kind of attitude when customers are being jerks. When I worked in retail a customer once spilled the contents of her bag all over the floor, she snapped her fingers at me, pointed to the floor and sneered, “You! Don’t just stand there pick my things up and if anything is broken I’ll make sure you can say goodby to your job!” Like how is it MY fault you tipped your bag everywhere? Annoyingly the manager was there too and she poked her sharp fingers into my back and hissed at me, “Get on with it! Don’t keep our customer waiting!” While I was on the floor they both stood over me just watching and smirking, I felt so humiliated and defeated I actually had to have a cry in the bathroom 😞

Resetting passwords doesn't actually improve security. What it does is it forces people to be less compliant like that. Of course, this leads to them creating lists of passwords they can't remember because password minimum requirements are not compatible with easy memorization which leads to password recovery which is a bigger hole than they tried to close so... Yeah password security practices are garbage.

I once worked with a woman like the one OP was dealing with in the last story once. This woman put yogurt in broccoli slaw (it came with the sauce bag) and tried to wash dishes with the hose we used to spray the floors down (right after I taught her how to use the 3-sink system). I once told her I lost my marbles, and she then proceeded to *look for them*. I guarantee, if she's of the same ilk, the woman OP dealt with got up to check her sink.

I remember 2 stories that my teacher told me when he was in tech support. 1. He got a call from a lady calling because her Automatic coffee holder wasnt working on her computer. He was puzzled since he didnt know what that was so he asked if she could clarify what she ment. She said it was the little coffee tray that you push the button on the from of the computer to pop it out. He realized what she ment so he told her that it was a CD drive not an automatic coffee holder and that she'll need to buy a new one since she clearly broke that one due to the weight of the coffee. 2. He got a call from a lady asking for help since her computer wasnt turning on for some reason. He then went through the basic procedure, he asked if all the cable were connected to the computer and she said yes. Then he asked if the computer was plugged into the electric socket and she said she couldnt see since it was dark behind the desk. He then asked if she could use a flashlight or turn on some lights to see back there and she said she didnt have a flashlight and she couldnt turn on the lights because there was a blackout going on. Gotta say some people just lack common sense sometimes.

Let me tell you one of the best ways I have ever seen a supervisor handle an escalating client. In the project, if a customer demanded to talk to a supervisor, you wouldn't call your supervisor to your phone, but promise the customor a callback from your supervisor within the hour. This promise was not empty, since it was mandatory to escalate the issue to your supervisor. Needless to say, many customers demand to talk to a supervisor, if they are not agreeing to the solution that you can offer, in my case it was no different. Therefore I informed my supervisor and talked with him about what the issue was and I was even able to listen to him calling the customer back, although I was only able to her my supervisor, not the customer at that point. The call went something like this. "Hello, this is P's supervisor. I was informed, that you had problems with how P handled your inquiry. What was the issue? Did he insult you in any way? No, I am not talking about the issue itself, that is, what we have customer support for. Again, did P insult you? Or did he raise his voice? Again, Sir, I am not a customer supporter. My job is to assess, if P was out of line and deserves a writeup or additional training in communication management. If you were not able to resolve your issue yet, I strongly recomment you contact customer support again, after our call is finished. So there was no behavioural issues with P's peformance. That is good to hear. I wish you a nice day."

The password story reminds me of a recent discussion with an elderly client I had over the phone at my job. Granted, I'm not really IT, but sometimes I end up being a bit of an IT person for my coworkers or for clients who don't understand how the internet works (I work for Meals on Wheels and deal with the elderly population). Basically what happened was that after I took a donation payment for her meals, the client wanted me to disable getting receipts sent to her email, but wanted to keep her email on file. I said the one thing I could do was change her email to mine (which we usually do, for those who do not have email), but she didn't like the only solution. She then got mad and said I wasn't doing my job properly. So I sent the client over to the supervisor who knew the payment system better (to humor the client, really). After my supervisor explained the same thing, the client decided to cancel her meals because "we were incompetent with things that we should be competent with." As much as I love my clients, they can be very frustrating at times!

I don’t remember if it was on this channel or another, but I’ve heard the story about the overtime pay issue before. Honestly, they shouldn’t have settled out of court unless they were going to get more than what they were entitled to per person, to make up for the fact that they’d have to probably dish out less in attorney’s fees settling out of court. That, plus the penalties to the IRS and stuff…kind of hoping that business didn’t survive.

"It's the same password I use for everything else" basically means that if any one of his accounts get compromised, then ALL of his accounts are wide open. There are lots of great password managers out there now that can keep your passwords organised for you and encrypted, and generate a unique password for each account. Or hell, even just writing your passwords down in a book would be fine for most people as long as that book never leaves your house. That story from JBaneLaw is pretty crazy too. Talk about working the long game.

That last story hits home. I teach mathematics, and since I have a computer background I'm the only guy in the math department that likes teaching pure logic classes. One of them is sort of an introduction to programming, using a simple pseudocode to get the students used to things like true/false logic, functions, arrays, basic concepts that you'll find in any real language. Most of the class is them working on worksheets while I help untangle logic snags. As a result, I am constantly exposed to people that just cannot logic. A three-step flowchart that finds the lesser of two numbers is an enigma to half my students when they get started. Physical props and kindergarten level analogies are really helpful in just cracking the shell of confusion that is caused by "I do not understand this magic box of lights." Simple example. About a month into the class one worksheet has a problem where there's a function that uses an array to draw a circle. The circle is positioned at A[0]+2 horizontally. The picture shows the circle drawn at 4 on the horizontal axis. Invariably a third of the class says "A[0] is used to make the horizontal, which is 4, and adds 2, so A[0] is 6." Usually an explanation of "Think about this, A[0] plus two is four. So what number, when you add 2 to it, makes 4?" gets them confused and flustered for about fifteen minutes before it sinks in. One time, though, I had a guy that needed five minutes of me sitting at his desk and still couldn't get it. Finally I grabbed my pen and scribbled "x+2=4" and asked him "What is x?" He said 2. Then he looked at the problem. Then he looked at my scribble. Then his eyes lit up. Then his he slumped and realized what I had been saying. I never considered that student dumb. He was too engaged to be dumb. He was actually trying to understand, before and after that moment. But it's fascinating how a single missed connection can cause the most insane things to come out of a person's mouth.
