Things like engineers are not really a dime a dozen you can’t party your ass off drink, smoke and sleep your way through school and still graduate with honors in any science major like you can with business or the liberal arts. Engineers aren’t a dime a dozen either they called engineering (mechanical at that) pre-business at N.C. State and it’s true to say something like that or imply what I’m thinking is just insane. And this whole business creates jobs argument is played out too congrats you create a bunch of low level low earning jobs that folks take to decide how they’re gonna blow their brains out one day in the meantime is fine I guess. No folks want careers and sad to say the business elite have stymied that away also I’m just being honest I don’t need a clown looking over my shoulder while I set up a new network or build another part of a program to help run my network if you don’t know anything about my work which many managers don’t then shut up same goes for that whole we create jobs bs no I made my own job since the idiots who can only call themselves managers who know all this business jargon and have no real skills can’t do what I do I have a job. I’m not knocking business but this super pro business bullshit is what’s got us so fucked now no way in hell business should be in the same room as someone in the sciences that’s bottom of the barrel and cream of the crop.

@@johnsmith-gk4td I’m not having a hissy fit but I’m sick of that idea that someone who chose business is just as important as folks doing the actual work that’s just ignorant and I’ve only been in IT for a few years myself but the last thing I need is some dumbass who doesn’t know anything about tech telling me I need to hurry up and screw something up or worse telling me I’m more expendable than they are you should know you’re the one who does the work not them. Unless you’re just a manager within, and without experience in engineering.

Somehow management seems to actually believe that the cheering and clapping is uplifting and team building when, in reality, it is annoying, demoralizing and makes workers feel like idiots. It reminds me of those scenes in old western movies where the bad guy is shooting his gun at a victim's feet telling him to "dance". Of course, I guess, management could very well know all the forced cheering and clapping makes the workers feel manipulated but maybe they are on a power trip and like treating workers like puppets.

Slightly different thing happened to a friend in about 77. He was a tower crane operator and had a pee bucket up in the cab but he had to do a doodoo so he came to ground and did his business On the way back to climb up the crane a new foreman told him to take this shovel and clean out this ditch. He dropped the shovel and said a shovel don't fit my hand. Foreman popped up and fired him, he said see that man, go talk to him. Foreman went over and talked to the owner who went apeshit on him. You don't fire one of two men in Oregon that can run a tower crane and the others a buddy of his. Needless to say he wasn't fired and retired from that company probably forty years later. Good thing the foreman didn't try fighting him, hell of a nice guy but built like Dick Butkus. He offered to teach me how to operate a tower crane, I have a bad fear of hights but told him I think I can get up to the cab but when he said I'd have to crawl out to the end of the stinger and grease the trolly I said ain't happenin bud, two bad minimum wage at the time was three bucks or so and he was pulling in over fifty. Dumbass me should have asked if he could get me in on a ground mounted crane but I didn't think of that.

When I worked for Tetra Tech, a large Engineering firm, they suddenly announced that anybody with side gigs would need to make a full disclosure to their manager. I brushed it off, but our manager came in from another city and sat with each of us, and it was a pretty serious thing. So, stupidly, I told him that I was doing side jobs, but explained that I had my own resources and was not competing. He said it didn't matter and that I would have to choose one job or the other... TODAY. I was shocked but had a moment of brilliance and told him that the office would be a ghost town if they actually pursued this course. I told him two of the people in the office raised cattle, one fixed up old houses, and one fixed old cars. He ended the meeting, and I never heard another word about it.

Also had us take classes for things that had nothing to do with us or our job area. All it did was slow down work productivity which we had to make up when we got back to our jobs after learning a job skill we had no use for and we didn’t use in our area. And once our old managers started to retire, you know, the ones who knew how everything worked, we got these new young guys who had no idea what we did and how we did it. Made all kinds of weird unnecessary job changes that messed everything up and made it impossible to do our jobs correctly. I got out just before the crap hit the fan hard, from what little I could hear about, there were a bunch of major job disasters thanks to these changes. I left complex job descriptions, but from what I heard either they didn’t follow them or tossed them away. Haven’t heard anything new and I’m glad I retired before all this…..
