Last story: a friend of mine was working as Pharmacy intern at a large chain through COVID while going to pharmacy school. That chain worked her so hard she broke down crying in front of a customer. That customer demanded to speak to the manager and yelled so much that the manager gave my friend a raise.

great customer. maybe he customer was working in an related field or something or knew someone? im personaly quite happy i was at university during covid and dident work at the place i was working before i went to uni. dont get me wrong, the job was great etc. but i dont have a lisence and it was an hour with public transport each way to get to my job and with it beeing in a stable it wasent something that could be done from home either so 2 hours pr day on the bus would defenitly put in risk of getting the virus even when it wasent in any big city. not even for norway, maybe mid size city a little on the smaller side in norwegian scale? a few thousand living directly in the city or 1-2 km away and 50-60k in the municipaliy. but still defenitly a risk when needing to travel that distance 5 days a week.

1st of all, that Santa ransom note deserves ALL of the points. 2nd, that boss that dared to say "iT's jUsT A dAmN dOg!" Is lucky he didn't get jumped. Most of the dog lovers I know have already been in prison, and they wouldn't hesitate to show him right from wrong.

You gotta respect a kid's creativity when they're told to write a letter to Santa as a school, and they turn said letter in a _list of hostage demands._ I would've never thought of that. I don't have kids of my own, but nothing stops me from sharing this idea with my 6-year-old niece! 😈

Crying story: It's super unethical to force people suffering grief to come to work. Nobody likes a boss who has no empathy towards their workers. The comment is even worse, the boss outright fails to recognize how much the dog meant to the owner, and that was enough to make a lot of people just leave in disgust. Hope the boss got sacked for that

First Story: Bosses like this are horrible. How are u going to accept an employee's leave and then last minute retract that acceptance. OP is generous to accept only $1.50 pay raise since they need OP more than OP needs them Second Story: I think 9 year old OP found a loophole back then. That nightmare and (at the time) future nightmares could be seen as emergencies. Jokes aside, that was a scary sounding situation for a then 9 year old had to deal with Third Story: They wouldn’t have lost OP if they just gave him the promotion. They told OP to prove himself and OP did just that by finding a new company that pays a lot more than them Fourth Story: This boss clearly didn’t take into account that him demanding OP to log everything would reveal that OP isn’t the problem here but in fact that HE is the problem Comment: Lmao Firth Story: That letter would have me on the floor dying with laughter 😂. The teacher said OP had to write a letter to Santa but didn’t say it had to be friendly. A ransom letter for Rudolf counts 😂😂😂😂 Sixth Story: OP's boss wanted to be a hard ass and insisted OP comes in so OP did just that without putting on a face for customers. 4th Story: I had a teacher in High School who constantly missed emails from students sending in their work. Once I got an F for supposedly not sending in my work. I went to her office and showed her the email in my sent folder, not only had I sent it to her, I sent it to her twice because I realized I had missed something and made a new version. Both versions were sent in before the deadline. She looked in her inbox (which was a total clusterfuck with like 2000 unread and unsorted emails) and eventually found it. She gives me a half hearted apology that sort of implied that it was my fault regardless and then tells me I'll get my new grade soon. Shortly after I am informed that I barely scraped by with a passing grade because I missed something important. I sigh, go to her again and inform her that she used the wrong version. Again she argued against me and tried to claim that was the only version she received. Eventually I pull out my phone and show her my sent folder again showing I sent her the new version a couple of hours after the first one (like I said it was still long before deadline). I get an even less sincere apology. A couple of days later I am informed that I got an A. I have never seen a teacher be that unhappy about a student getting an A.

The second story has always been my fear when I was a child. A kid can't do much when a criminal tries to do that. Glad that person went away.

This actually happened to my friend, his parents had gone away on holiday and his older adult sister was left looking at his 9 year old self. Well the sister told him she wasnt to be disturbed for any reason, because of course she had her boyfriend over. So, he didnt, however he fell asleep watching a movie and woke to a sound, that sound being someone trying to break in. Well they went to the back door, found the doggie door and tried to get in. Well, the irony of the situation was that the movie he had been watching was Home Alone. Well, his sister got disturbed, not by my friend, but the scream the guy gave when my friend, not having a spider, tipped his ant farm on the guy's head, who had gotten stuck in the doggie door.

I had a boss like that. He asked for a proposal for a software project, and then went on vacation (he would often call us at the Friday team meeting from the ski resort, cough a few times, and say he can't come in. We could hear from the background noises he was at the slopes). When he got back he had a meeting with the client and didn't have the proposal in hand. He decided to throw me under the bus, and called me into the meeting and dressed me down. I told him, "It's on your desk where I put it last Tuesday. Shall I go get it for you?" He said no and I could go. He never brought it up again, but also he never tried to throw me under the bus again.

My son had a similar assignment where he had to write me a letter telling me how much he appreciates me for extra credit and his letter said Mom I have to write this letter to you for extra credit I'm sure you would agree that this is a pretty silly assignment so I'll just say you're my favorite mom I love you lol

The letter to santa story, chad kid right there, would have given her maximum points for it, complied with the instructions and was creative, perfect.

Last story- managers like that really piss me off. How tf do you ask someone who’s mourning to come into work so soon?? A few months ago, my roommate died (me and my other roommate found her, so it was pretty traumatic). I cannot even begin to express how grateful I was for my managers in how they handled it. I even forced myself to go into for one of my short shifts a few days later (because I was in the “tough it out” mindset) and when one of them saw me he said “why are you here??” and was very concerned the whole time (I definitely went in too soon, I was shaky for most of the shift). So when I think of my amazing mangers, I get so mad when I see people like this jerk in the story behave like that. Have some compassion and get over yourself!

In 2002, I started a new job (and career) and within 4 months of starting, my dad passed away. My bosses were absolutely fantastic, *urging* me to take a week off with pay. Instead, I just took a couple of days off (mostly because I was so new there). And I ended up working there 18 more years, until I retired! I did take the week off when my mom died in 2013, tho.

That last story hit too close to home. A couple of days ago my family and I had a doggo who was 12 and a half pass away the other morning. So if I was that waitress I would've walked out with the customers ASAP 🏃💨

My dog was not doing so well, took her to the vet and she had to be put down. I stayed with her as long as took, trying not to cry as I petted but had to leave for work. I was going though the motions that day. I probably could have gotten the day off, but it helped keep my mind of the now empty house and needed the money

Story 1: 0:08 Wow, the Boss really tried to cancel the already accepted timeoff to benefit himself 😳 (I know this happens far too much). Did he really think Op would be like "Ok, Boss. Whatever you say." and then cancel/sell his tickets?? Maybe the Boss was hoping that Op would give him his tickets now that he "had to work" 🤔. Whatever. He got what he deserved. Glad Op got some type of raise for coming back. Story 2: 2:17 This is exactly why you don't tell your kids to "Don't do [blank to me], in any terms!" (Like don't interrupt me) because these things can happen! To a kid, them waking up from a nightmare is just as scary as someone trying to break in (as op mentioned). Both are emergencies to a child's mind. But the parents had made it seem like their fear/pain isn't important to them and therefore shouldn't be voiced. This phrase could lead to some serious outcomes. A break in, a burnt down house, or worse... a kid getting taken advantage of... Glad Op was ok in the end, but the parents sound Awful. Please don't yell this at your kids. What isn't an emergency to adults, is probably an emergency to a child. Don't risk it and have them not telling you about "actual emergency". Story 3: 3:39 This is always how you lose great employees. Overlooking them for promotions, No raises, Rejected time off, things like that. All because they are willing to do all that work for no extra money. Then are surprised when that great employee leaves. Well now, not only are they out Op's original job, but they are also out every Extra Job Op did for free. I hope they enjoy hire at least 2 people to replace Op. Next time, value your great employee better. Story 4: 6:07 I love that Bosses love to call out their employees for not doing something, but them when the employee proves it actually was the Boss's fault, they get mad 😒 Comment: 8:59 Another Boss doing the same thing. Great job for Op figuring out to do memos Story 5: 9:36 Wait, can't you not force a child to write something that a student is not comfortable with? Especially when it has to do with their religion?? I love that letter, absolutely hilarious 😂 A win is a win Story 6: 11:37 Wow. So he would rather have a health risk at the bakery than covering the shift himself? Op could have gotten snot in the food and then customers would complain. All that comes back to making the managers look back. Why do people try and force others to keep going after they are hurt. Give them at least a day, damn! Comments: 13:10 "It's just a damn dog!" That would be the line that made me quit. If I was a customer, I would definitely leave and call someone to complain about that manager. That is not how you treat people.

As a Jew I found the letter to Santa hilarious, but saddening. I was in the same position SIXTY FIVE YEARS AGO, when my third grade teacher asked us to tell the class what Santa was going to bring us, and it is very disturbing that this kind of insensitivity is still acceptable. That being said, OP handled it beautifully. I fortunately had a little warning and asked my grandmother what to do. She told me to say that Santa Moishe would bring me a dreidel, some gelt and an electric train. Santa Moishe wore a blue suit, came through the front door and said, "Oy! Oy! Oy!" I did as my Bubbe suggested. My class was full of unsophisticated seven year olds who didn't understand the joke any more than I did, but looking back now I wish I had been on camera. I was so serious, and my classmates believed me absolutely. I have no idea what the teacher thought, though.

I don't agree with it being about sensitivity or having almost anything to do with religion. The roots of Christmas have nothing to do woth Christianity, and mostbof what was added after has nothing to do with it. I'd understand if they asked you to do a debate on the side of abortion, but Santa as he is now is a culture thing, not religious (and yes those can be both...he isnt) he isn't a deity or a priest, even the man he was based on wasn't a priest (yes named a Saint after he died)....I don't think religion should give a pass in cases where the disconnect has nothingnto do with religion....especially since jew and Christian are the same religion, just one denomination subset away....jews await the messiah, Christians have it already....it isn't 2 religions, it's 2 denominations of one religion

Same thing happened to me and I just told the class how Santa wasn't real, and it was just their parents making it all up. They probably wouldn't have believed me, except that the teacher rushed to get me to stop talking and sit back down way too quickly. The level of quickness people only have when they know they're busted and are trying to cover it up. It was kind of fun at the next P&T conference trying to get the teacher to explain to me why sometimes it's OK to make up stories and lie through your teeth, and sometimes it's not.

@@75ur15 considering the massive differences between the two (the sabbath, dietary restrictions, even burial practices) as well as both doctrine and theology, christianity and judaism are nothing alike. Its not like the comparatievly minor variations of christian between catholic and protestant. besides forcing someone to participate in a religious tradition/myth that they are uncomfortable with due to thier beliefs (or lack of belief in the case of an atheist) is still very rude. people do not have the right to force thier traditions on others, especially when theres an easy compromise.

I had a co-worker put in her 2 weeks and the managers (the GM’s name was Karen 😂) told her “No, we’ll schedule you once a week” I was just as confused as the associate. Then in 2 weeks when she did t show up they were UPSET with surprise Pikachu faces! Saying things like “we expected better”, “ I can’t believe she would do this!”. I reminded them she put in her 2 weeks!! What did they expect?!?! This is Wet Seal, not a place where you make a career 😂

Why ? I don't get it. Since when Santa have anything to do with religion. It's quite the opposite really. It's in direct concurrency with religions. It's a fictional character overshadowing the so called date of birth of Jesus and Saint Nicholas. It's true than Christmas was invented by the Christians as a way to replace a pegan hollyday but Santa Claus is not part of it. Neither does receiving toys really. Not that I believe in Jesus anyway, I'm an atheist but I don't see how writing a letter to a folkloric character has anything to do with being betraying your Jewish beliefs.

I took 2 days off when my dog needed emergency surgery back when I worked in banking in 2020. A couple months ago when I had to put my sweet boy down I took the next day off. I work in accounting now. Neither employer gave me a hard time about it. My current one even had a canvas with his picture on it made for me. Pets are a huge part of your life! Your day is planned around them.

My wife and I had an emergency meeting with the school counselor (elementary school) because she thought that our youngest had a cruel nickname. (Mattrat) It so happened that a friend who taught at the same school walked by. I quickly asked him to say my sons name. Little did I know that he was the head of the local teachers union. Needless to say we left a minute or two later.

I once worked for a boss who demanded I go in and work a full 8 hour shift when my dog had to be put down. When I got to work, even though I tried my best not to, i kept randomly bursting into tears and after a while she told me to get over it and be thankful it wasn't my mom that died. Cause dogs can be replaced and moms can't. I actually did walk out after that.

Santa letter: I think OP's dad and mine have the same outlook on parenting. After laughing about my compliance, my dad, however, would have probably laid into the teacher for forcing a religious assignment on me. Getting a bad teacher fired was one of the things my dad took pride in.

The Jewish girl who wrote a ransom letter to Santa is awesome! The teacher wanted a letter to Santa but didn't specify that it had to be a traditional one, or even a friendly one! Her idea was definitely creative!

The last story, just...holy shit. I used to work at a grocery store, and one day, a coworker that I'd known since I was about 8 or 9 years old came up and asked me if my dad had talked to me yet. This was during a time in my life where I wasn't talking to him because he was being an asshole and I was an adult who didn't have to listen to him. I told her no, and asked what happened. (This was right when I was about to go back from break.) She told me an 18 year old kid, someone who I knew and saw every summer growing up that I fully considered my cousin (his mom was a close friend of the family) had gotten hit on his way to work by a drunk driver a couple days prior, and he didn't make it. At first I thought it was a sick joke, but when it sunk in moments later I just felt empty. I was already older than he'd ever get to be. His younger siblings would all outlive him. My little brother lost his best friend. I thanked her for telling me, stepped into the locker room to cry for a couple minutes and then tried to find a manager to ask if I could go home. I instead ran into a supervisor. I explained the situation and said I was looking for a manager. The supervisor responded with "I don't care, we're slammed, go help customers." I only had an hour or two left of my shift, but they felt like years while I struggled to keep myself together and not burst out into tears on the sales floor. I've since quit that job, and I've heard my old department is a flaming dumpster fire. They can't keep anyone new for more than a week, they're losing all of their loyal workers because of garbage treatment, and they've needed to call in help from other stores because the department is too short staffed to function as is. I'm glad I left when I did.

OP: "I quit. This is my notice." Boss: "I don't accept it." OP: "What are you going to do? Chain me to the workplace?"

Someone tried to get into our apartment when my son and a friend were sleeping in the living room. They woke me, I looked outside, and called 911. The man tried to shoulder the door open and the operator heard it. The man was drunk and belligerent with the officers who responded. The children were scared. I was anxious but not scared. We all had baseball bats in hand in case he got through the door.

Related to the last story: I worked at a chain pet supply store, and they gave you pet bereavement leave if you needed it. Over a weekend one of my beloved cats needed to be rushed to an emergency vet. I kept my manager up to date with everything going on because I was supposed to open the store the next day. The vet kept him overnight to try to save his life. While I was doing opening duties alone the next morning I got a call from the vet informing me that we either needed to say goodbye to our cat, or pay thousands of dollars for treatment. I kept trying to call my husband, but he was asleep and his phone was on silent. While I waited for him to wake up, I had to work knowing we were going to lose our fur baby. I was inconsolable, but I couldn't leave until someone else came in after lunch to replace me. My manager felt for me, but I couldn't leave her alone while the store was open. Eventually I got off, and we rushed to the vet to say goodbye. I requested pet bereavement for a couple days afterwards, but our assistant store manager called me and said, "I really need you in on Tuesday because that's when we're getting our shipment in, and we need everyone here. You can have the day after off instead." Sure, let me just delay my grief for you! I went in, but I didn't talk to anyone that day, and would frequently cry. A couple months later I opened the store with the same assistant store manager and she told me how one of her cats escaped and was missing. An hour into our shift her son called and informed her that he saw the cat on the side of the road. She disappeared and wouldn't come out of hiding unless I called for assistance. I had to open the store by myself, and run it basically alone until someone else came in a couple hours later. Of course SHE got to take her pet bereavement leave...

That last one... I witnessed a similar but more serious situation. It was the girls sister who had passed. When I heard that, I grabbed the number out of a phone book for an attorneys office and handed it to the girl in front of her manager, telling her, "Here, this attorneys office might be able to help remind your boss about federal grievance guidelines... maybe ethics, too." Her boss immediately told her to go home and let him know when she could start working again.

The letter to Santa got me laughing hard😂😂

That last story. My cat of 19 years was showing signs of the end of his time, and I was convinced that that day was his last day on earth (we grew up together. He was a newborn kitten when I was 3 years old). My mom comforted me, and said "you're not seriously going to work today right? Call out. If you're sure today is his last, spend time with him and say a proper goodbye" So I got on the phone, my voice shaking from crying. My manager on the other end bitterly said "can't you just take him to the vet or something?" (coldly suggesting euthanasia so I can come into work) my phone speaker was loud enough for my mom to hear, and She. Was. PISSED. My mom said very loudly "WHAT THE F***K DID SHE JUST SAY?!" My manager heard her, "GIVE ME THE PHONE, I'LL PUT HER I HER PLACE!" My manager sputtered "S-sorry, we'll see you tomorrow!" and hung up. My mom was seething because she knew I was the type of employee who rarely ever called out, and went into work EVERY TIME I was called in. As predicted, my cat passed away peacefully that night, spoiled rotten up til his last breath. My manager apologized to me the next day, and said "if it had been my dogs... I think I would have done the same thing" but that was all she could muster.

Story 5 made me think of all the wonderful teacher I've had throughout the years. One in particular was my History, Geography and Social studies teacher in my 7th through 9th grade. If I were to describe her with one word, it would be: Hero! She was super-friendly to talk to, she'd help you after class with assignments and she would always take time to listen to your teenage problems. A good example of her dedication to help you learn, I'm Autistic. My handwriting was(and still is) barely legible and I was(and to an extent, still am) very socially awkward. As a result, written assignments were *HELL* and no one wanted to work with me on group projects. But being the saint of a teacher that she was, she allowed me to work solo with an extension and she let me give my reports vocally. She sadly passed away in 2018 after a long battle with breast cancer. RIP Lotta Flodin, you were an absolute treasure!

Not exactly malicious, but I have my own recent Humorous Compliance story. And I do mean Humorous. I was a camp counselor this summer. An important detail is that the counselors and campers slept in the same cabins. We had just entered our cabin to wind down and put the campers to bed. One camper, G, decided to get out his remaining energy by running around pulling up his shirt and showing his belly to everyone. When he got to me, I said "Be careful, G. If you keep showing that tummy to people, someone might... tickle it." And as I said that, I became that someone. A moment later, when I was done, G headed to the bathroom to change. And he said, "Now get J!" J was standing right next to us. He was still fully clothed, so I wasn't about to do anything to him. But he got a scared look on his face and backed away. But as he backed away, J said something as if he were challenging me. He said, "Go ahead. Make me laugh." Alright. There's more than one way to do that. So I asked J, "What is a chicken's favorite basketball team?" He didn't know, so I said "The" and imitated a chicken noise. Mission accomplished.

The teacher story, which I believe is the 6th one, reminds me on my senior year English teacher. Now I'm autistic and need extra time and help on my work and tests. I get this mostly in English and Math. The teacher I had was prideful, consending, and didn't really give me the help they were required to give me. One of the assignments was about the 7 deadly sins, I was actually the only one in my class who knew all of the sins and what they represent because of how much I love that kinda stuff. Me and my friend I call "my son" had the color green. There were 7 groups/pairs, and they had to answer 3 questions about whatever color they had. Me and my friend did this, the teacher comes to us for our answers, says we're wrong, then moves on to a different group saying there are no wrong answers. Then when the teacher gets back to us, after we changed our answers, they say we didn't have to change our answers and could have stood out ground. I was so angry I wanted to cry. Then the teacher said that I was wrong because I already knew more about the 7 deadly sins and that was effecting my answers. That is not a joke, that's actually what thy told me.

With the prove yourself story something I’ve learned is ur usually always more valuable to a different company.

If I was the kid in the Santa clause story I would have made some complaint about a teacher asking me to commit blaspheme by having me write letters to religious figures that contradict my own religion. I’m Jewish too, and am I that spiritual? No. Am i that petty? Yes.

For the 1st story: it is also a good for the worker that the boss knows he is not a pushover. If you screw him, he screws you.

I have a similar story. Not really malicious compliance tho. When I was 18 I was working as a part time support worker and I was with this one lady taking her to a therapy appointment when I got a call from my mum saying she needed to come pick me up because we had to drive to the hospital because grandad was dying and the doctors didn't think he'd make it through the night. Obviously I messaged my boss, messaged the group chat and asked if anyone can come ASAP to cover me and help the woman I was looking after and then I left. We drove 4 hours to get to my grandad in time and luckily he was still alive. While I was literally watching my grandad die before my eyes my boss texted me saying "when will you be back?" I responded "I don't know. It depends on how my grandad does" and he messaged back saying "well, we need you to come back and make up for the hours you missed" I got mad and just texted back "I'm literally watching my grandad die before my eyes. Get someone else to cover those hours indefinitely because I'm not coming back ever." So yeah I quit right then and there. Not the best way to quit but I had a lot of emotions going at the time.

One of the best forms of revenge is to do your job well- without documenting your methods. Bosses rarely master detail. Very few of them actually know what staff do. And when you leave, your successor cannot be trained in, say, 2 weeks. Or a month. And the boss's boss won't understand why results can't be replicated. If you work w/clients; always serve your clients well. REally well. Because the crappy service they will get from your successor... may convince them to leave, and at the very least, they will be upset...

"The letter to Santa" has to be one of the funniest events to ever occur😂

I’m not sure if the fifth story counts as malicious compliance since she technically wrote a ransom note instead of a letter. Either way it’s hilarious.

Yeah, she did technically write a random note, but she still wrote to Santa liked the teacher asked. Since nowhere in the story did the teacher specifically how it had to be written so long as it was to Santa Claus, I would say that is still malicious compliance.

I'm an only child. Our Border Collie lived 19.5 y😢ears. He was my Brother for all intents & purposes. If I had heard "it's just a dog" as a customer, I would have flipped out on the guy. And, this would have been a first for losing control. But THAT would have done it!

Story 2: man OPs parents suck

3rd Story: Well, if you wanted to keep OP in the company, then just promote him? What's so hard about that? Why risk the company just so you can save a couple of bucks? Bosses like these are idiots.

Short sighted zero sum thinking. "But if he gets another dollar, that's a dollar I DONT get! Who does he think he is, that he deserves MY dollar more than I do!" A rising tide lifts all ships, and you get more flies with honey than vinegar, but some people still don't get it. Not until they've had their nose rubbed in it, and forced to deal with the consequences of their short sighted decision making.

My favorite bad boss story from when I was 16. I had a weekend off from the fast food place I was working. My Dad and I had planned to drive two hours to the nearest big city to go shopping. My boss called at 6 AM to tell me he needed me to work to cover for his hung over nephew. I told Dad and he said no, we have plans. We stopped by the restaurant to pick up my paycheck. Boss told me it wasn't ready yet and to clock in for work. My Dad, standing right there, told him we had plans to go out of town. We were going to gas up the car then swing back for my paycheck. While I was gassing up the car my Dad was talking to the owner of the gas station. When we were done he got in the car and drove back to get my paycheck. Before we went inside he told me something interesting. We went inside to get my check. The restaurant owner handed me my check and then demanded that I clock in for work. I looked at my Dad who smiled then I told the guy, No, I no longer work here. I got a new job for $2 bucks more an hour. Bye.

Story 1: Lol OP finesse the hell out of the boss. Good for him.

I can give a small bit of insight as to why she wanted op to go to Girl Scouts. TLDR: She's probably anti-Semitic. Speaking from experience, why the GSA is meant to be a secular organization some troupes, especially in and around the Bible Belt, push Christianity. My own troupe growing up made us say grace before any meal or snack, would punish you if you didn't want to say grace or didn't know any, made us pray before bed during sleep overs and would sometimes make us do "outings" where we attended church services and volunteered at church events. As someone who has been atheist since 12, this was torture but my parents didn't let me quit until I was 14. This teacher forcing Jewish kids to write to Santa and saying they need Girl Scouts when they don't do as ordered. She seems like an anti-Semite to me.

Modern employers want the experience of a 40 year old, energy of a 30 year old, and the pay of a 16 year old.

I know this will be a strech but I really need a 30 min ep of rslash now. I listen to while I work.

Story 3 is why all salaries for all companies should be published for everyone to see. The companies know what they're paying people. They probably have a pretty good idea what the others in the industry are paying as well. Corporations already have way more bargaining power in wage negotiations than employees do, why give them an information advantage too?

Always document everything. Even if you like your boss. Even if you trust your boss. Document everything. I got burned when a boss claimed I had never turned in my 2 weeks notice, even though I had handed it to her with witnesses. Document your hours. Ask for time off? Bcc that email to your personal email. Boss sends out a new policy? Get it in writing. Do progress based work? I recommend keeping a running timeline in a document on the side. It is better to be annoying for documentation than to be burned.

I learned early on.... "If it's not in writing it didn't happen " I also got burned once when an IT director claimed I did something wrong, but it was exactly what he told me to do.

I worked for a Federal agency. At one point we were converting some paper manuals into an online computerized format. It was import regulations for the countries of the world. Each of these had its own formatting structure and they asked for volunteers to do the conversions. I volunteered to do it and was assigned 3 countries to convert. Everything was already in English as that was standard in international trade. We only had one computer in the office (mid to late 1980’s). I had gotten permission to use it between 0800 and 0900 when there was downtime. Powering through this task was easy as the new format was simple. One of my supervisors (we had 4) complained that I should be doing task B instead. I was always one of the top or top person in task B and had a big cushion on it already. I completed this computer task one month ahead of schedule and also received a cash bonus for it. Come to my evaluation, they were supposed to rotate the supervisors evaluating us, but I always got this supervisor. He starts the evaluation with the usual “I been told by the other supervisors that you didn’t use the downtime to complete that project”, this is when he was the one complaining that I was using that specific downtime to do it. I just stood up and started to walk away which I think startled him. Then he said it didn’t make a difference in my evaluation as it was still “Superior”. This supervisor was my bane, and also got involved in many “get rich quick” and MLM schemes roping in employees to them. Only once he tried to get me involved, it was a gold mine needing a $2000 investment. I don’t know what came over me, but I had finished reading “Roughing It” by Mark Twain several months earlier and automatically spouted out Mark Twain definition of a gold mine from it and left. Luckily, within several months of this incident the Federal Government made it a firing offense for a superior to make such offers. If you don’t know, the definition reads: “ A gold mine is a hole in the ground with a liar above it.” All those that invested lost their money, one told me he invested only to have a tax loss to claim.

I can relate to Story 4. As an Admin personnel, you're almost ALWAYS the first to be blamed for things. Document EVERYTHING. i Write down everything I did, what I'm going to do, and when to get it done. Then send a follow up email for EVERY SINGLE TASK and CC the Supervisor on every email. Not only have these practices made me a better worker, but they cover my ass. It was a lesson that was learned the hard way when I was thrown under the bus and didn't document my work

3rd story: Man,I love when people change jobs and get a better job.

Both the management in the last story/comment suck. Loosing someone close or a pet is a horrible experience. I came from having a 20 yo cat pts after she had an injury that they wouldn't op on due to her age, straight to a job interview. I was a mess since the cat had been in my life since I was really young. They somehow convinced me to go do the interview first. I was so upset that it cancelled out my normal social anxiety and I did land the job. Although it hurt, the worst case of this was an animal that wasn't even mine. I helped out at a riding school for years and while I was considered one of the best in terms of handling the horses, I had a select few that were not always favoured by everyone else due to temperment. There was an exception to this in one heck of a chonker draft cross; while he was generally considered safe and friendly, we bonded something fierce and everyone saw it because he was so receptive to me compared to everyone else. Honestly, he was 'the one' in terms of horses that I'd fully trust with my life. It's why I was so terribly angry that eventually he got PTS because he ended up with an infected hoof because the owner didn't get him shod after I was pestering them for weeks. He couldn't go barefoot because he had soft hooves, but he also needed the shoeing because all for feet had loose shoes, you could hear it and he was getting clumbsy. It was a twisted shoe with one of the nails puncturing the sole that set up the infection, and although we tried our best to fight it the infection literally destroyed the bone in his foot and would be in constant pain. I was honestly so distraught over him even though he wasn't mine, the staff and even some people that owned their own horses were at least there to comfort me.... I mean I hate hugs but I let people hug me when I cried. Working through that was so damn hard. I eventually ended up bonding with another horse that had a lot of issues, but it just wasn't the same. People can be fucking heartless when it slightly inconveniences them

Some parents are really dumb. “Don’t do this ever again” doesn’t always apply to all situations. I’d MUCH rather they wake me up for a nightmare than to not wake me up during a potential break-in. You need to clarify when to do something and when not to. Kids see things as very black and white.

I get that some people don't love dogs by default (I don't get HOW, but still), but it is common sense that most people love dogs, that boss should have been aware that it would offend almost everyone who could hear it. I'd leave the place and never return.

Last story’s comment is awful. Imagine hearing how your wait staff’s dog, that she grew up with 88% of her life, is dying and demanding she come back after the dog’s dead, then yelling at her about how it’s just a dog when she is crying. Hope the place (if just the physical building if it’s a franchise) goes under, cause that guy does not deserve to work with people to feed them.

Wow. I'm a father of 3. My youngest, our son, often wakes up with bad dreams. I have difficulties sleeping and getting to sleep so I'm often... okay almost always awake at stupid hours on KZread on the tv. Anyway he'll come search for me when he needs comfort after bad dreams. Never, not once, has he ever been refused cuddles with dad for any reason. Even if I have been sleeping or just gotten to sleep, never will I refuse to show my boy he is loved. One time I was in the middle of my own bad dream (thanks military) and when he startled me awake I went "aarrgghh" which of course scared the crap out of him for which I immediately felt horrible and scooped him up for cuddles and reassurance. My kids aren't treated like they're the centre of the universe but if they need me, they get dad and all the love I can fathom for them. People who can't do the same astound me.
