I was going to say “yes, you are the jerk because English is the main language we speak here currently”. HOWEVER, that was when I assumed you were trying to speak with the woman and did not know English. I deal with a lot of folks who come to America, are here for years, and refuse to learn English and try to work public jobs dealing with the public who mainly speak English. My grandma emigrated to the US in the 60’s after growing up in WW2 Europe and she learned English and was the most patriotic person I ever knew. The 60 years she was here, she still occasionally spoken in her native language to my grandpa and the rest of the family that knew the language, but we still mainly spoke English. That being said, that woman was an absolute b*tch because you were actually speaking with your family member and not speaking to anyone else. I’m glad you were able to give her a good shock lol

Amusingly, you could get a job in Japan where English is the only language you are required to speak. That job being an English teacher. Granted it's a good idea to learn Japanese if you wanna live there. This is probably the only example, though.

@viviennemorgan7217 I'm not disagreeing that the lady was a jerk for telling this kid to speak English. She totally deserved flak for that. But, at the same time, it's been 10 years... the lady may now be a staunch defender of cultural rights (like language). The OP was petty by not letting the lady prove herself one way or the other and judged her character over a 10 year old grudge. If the lady was still a culturally insensitive jerk, then fire her... but she might not be anymore because she learned her lesson a long time ago

She was grabbed by a stranger who had yelled at her just seconds before, would you say thats okay to do that? I've been yelled at by a costumer who was stealing, he call me all sorts of names ect, and I broke down and had to take a break, and I'm almost 10 years her senior, try not to be so judging towards others limits.

Like are they even fit to be working if they can be triggered that easily? I hope that was just a build up of stress and that interaction was the breaking point because if not then holy crap.

Yeah, i really don't think that's a r@cist demand. I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but speaking anything other than english around obviously english speaking people is actually considered very rude. It's like you're talking about them behind their back. If you want to have a private conversation, maybe take it somewhere else rather than make the actual native uncomfortable. Same goes for any language in any country. If you're a tourist somewhere where english is not the primary language, speaking english around the natives is also considered rude.
