R.C. Sproul Reads ‘The Calvinist’

R.C. Sproul, author, pastor, chairman of Ligonier Ministries, and dear brother in Christ, passed away on December 14, 2017. In 2013, Desiring God asked Sproul to record John Piper’s “The Calvinist,” a poem that captures God’s sovereign intersection with the life of a sinful man.
Desiring God initially released a video-poem in December 2013 that featured Sproul, Piper, and five others reading various stanzas of the poem. John Piper wrote of the collaboration, “I love these men. And you will hear why in the way they read.” In these four minutes, hear Sproul’s original recording of the entire poem - and hear the conviction of a man who loved the sovereign God, lived to make him known, and died in the truth of the poem’s last stanza:
See him nearing death.
Listen to his breath,
Through the ebbing pain:
Final whisper: “Gain!”

That last word in the poem read by RC hit me like a ton of bricks and boy was I not expecting that. I broke down and gave thanks to The Lord that He has given us such hope! To live is Christ but to die is gain. We all await for that gaining moment!!! Thank you God for sharing yet another faithful servant of yours to the world, giving us yet another example how a a life can be truly transformed by the precious blood and resurrection of Christ! Leaving behind a legacy that all points to Christ!

See him on his knees, Hear his constant pleas: Heart of ev’ry aim: “Hallowed be Your name.” See him in the Word, Helpless, cool, unstirred, Heaping on the pyre Heed until the fire. See him with his books: Tree beside the brooks, Drinking at the root Till the branch bear fruit. See him with his pen: Written line, and then, Better thought preferred, Deep from in the Word. See him in the square, Kept from subtle snare: Unrelenting sleuth On the scent of truth. See him on the street, Seeking to entreat, Meek and treasuring: “Do you know my King?” See him in dispute, Firm and resolute, Driven by the fame Of his Father’s name. See him at his trade. Done. The plan is made. Men will have his skills, If the Father wills. See him at his meal, Praying now to feel Thanks and, be it graced, God in ev’ry taste. See him with his child: Has he ever smiled Such a smile before, Playing on the floor? See him with his wife, Parable for life: In this sacred scene She is heaven’s queen. See him stray. He groans. “One is true,” he owns. “What is left to me? Fallibility.” See him in lament “Should I now repent?” “Yes. And then proclaim: All is for my fame.” See him worshipping. Watch the sinner sing, Spared the burning flood Only by the blood. See him on the shore: “Whence this ocean store?” “From your God above, Thimbleful of love.” See him now asleep. Watch the helpless reap, But no credit take, Just as when awake. See him nearing death. Listen to his breath, Through the ebbing pain: Final whisper: “Gain!”

What in the world does this poem have to do with "The Calvinist"? It should be titled "The Christian" or "A Serious Believer in Jesus". If it was about "The Calvinist" they should include language like: "Chosen beyond my say, from before the world was made, God saved me. I have not responsibility to believe, but just the potion do I drink, to trust beyond my control, the minority group made for heaven I must enroll. I'm grateful, but not culpable for the evil or good I do, I'm determined for both - Life is meaningless at most. All those who burn in hell couldn't do otherwise, they are born dead and can want nothing other than what God gave them - an incorrigible heart, glorify God for this do because it makes him look somehow good whatever that means....I could do on, but this poem doesn't really hit or hint at any points of Calvinistic distinctives.

@@StevenWayneJones that is ok brother. Let me explain. that's one of the lines that denotes a calvinist belief. That God is good, he is in control, and what's left to the human to choose? Failabuility Also the line about work "The man will have his skills, if the father wills" This also denotes a predestined theology. Perhaps you didn't notice it because a lot of people have reformist views without realizing it. I hope that helps. Peace be with you.

@@nicktermer Oh I see!! Thanks :) I am non-Calvinist and I know the difference between what makes a Calvinist and what makes a non-Calvinist. Saying "if the Father wills" is a shared belief between BOTH non-Cal.s and Cals. It is not a Calvinistic belief. Non-Cals. believe "if the Father wills" perhaps more because the Cal. believes that everything is a part of God's Sovereign will, so to ask the question "if" is a little meaningless because God is willing all things by His sovereign will. Also, humans being fallible is also recognized by BOTH Non-C's and C's. I didn't see anything in the poem that is exclusively Cal. Even non-Calvinists believe in Predestination, but not in the same exact way. Thanks for clearing up what you meant there!!

If you thought that Calvinism or Reformed Theology is about the 5 points only, you are definitely wrong. The 5 points of TULIP (or ULTIP during the Synod of Dordrecht) was only a Calvinistic answer to the 5 points of debate argued by the Arminians during the national Synod at Dordrecht. The entirety of Reformed theology can be grasped in the Belgic Confession, the Westminster Catechism, the Heidelberg Catechism.

Easy to see who Sproul served and who Piper serves. You would think that a "christian" would write a poem titled "The Christian". If they want to glorify Calvin that's their choice. Oops there is that thing called freewill. I will choose to glorify my Lord and Saviour Jesus, God's Christ. Darn it, there is that freewill again.

@@wicomms Many of the militant anti-calvinists are looking for Jesus on their terms, and pretty much anyone should be able to work out the details that God would have to accept. The Bible says 'Today is the day of salvation' - you don't get a guarantee of tomorrow. I don't have a problem with the "Biblical" anti-calvinist who loves the Jesus of scripture, but the one who pushes universalism for "all" is wrong. If one is not one of those who believe, there is no evidence that they are among the "all". I think most Biblical anti-calvinists mostly misunderstand theological details and make minor issues into major disputes. Probably less than 1 out of 1,000 anti Calvinists have personally read anything the Calvin wrote. They go into a depth of disagreement on nuance that Calvin never talked about. When you pray for the Lost, then you realize that only God can save a sinner - that is the core of Calvinism. You aren't praying that God will "nudge" a person into belief, you pray that they are absolutely born again
