As someone who did martial arts for most of high school, I have to say this: any teacher worth their salt will teach you that the first thing you need to know about fighting is that if you have the option not to fight, you take. Even the greatest martial artist in the world is not immune to getting stabbed.

@@redrubyrose618 You should think beyond that. I've dated men before that I only really talked to in the first place was just to be polite - nothing more - and then it turns out the more you get to know some people the more attractive they can become if they're nice people. Even my husband... when I first met him, although he is conventionally good looking, he just did not look like my type and I had zero interest. He was clearly into me though. Then I began to take notice because I quickly found out that he was a really funny guy, and obviously I began to take more notice and it turns out a really nice, kind and intelligent guy too. By the time I married him I wondered how I got so lucky.

This weird contradiction is sadly true for some guys who buy too much into the hero stuff. Because Batman gets beaten up all the time, and that's macho, but he doesn't get _humiliated._ That's _weak._ Society doesn't do a good job of teaching boys to roll with psychological punches and laugh them off - only physical punches.

As someone who lives pay check to paycheck that last story hits HARD! I had been BEGGING for anniversary photos for years since we got married, but we could never afford them. Last year we had made plans to take anniversary photos with the photographer that took our wedding photos. Then my husbands cars engine took a turn for the worst, and needs a brand new transmission. He is really good friends with a dealer since he was 16 and bought his first vehicle from them, and has been looking at getting a new car for the first time since he started driving with his learners permit at 15. We cancelled our appointment to fix the car, traded it in and at 31 he finally bought his brand new car. I was so excited for him because this was such a huge purchase for the both of us and a sign that even with loosing my job and starting a new career we are finally bouncing back! It sucked that I didn’t get my photos but my husband getting to work safely was more important. 2 weeks after the car was purchased he told me to go pick out a dress from a store that I had been wanting for a while, on his dime. Then he sent me to go get my nails done on a Friday afternoon after I got off work. I though it was him apologizing that I couldn’t get my anniversary photos, so here’s some consolation stuff to make you feel better. The next day he woke me up at like 5 a.m. and told me to pack the dress and my makeup bag. Obviously I questioned him and he said it was a surprise. He drove me out to the same place where we exchanged vows (in a state park just outside of town) and surprised me with a few months late anniversary shoot. The dealership had a special that if you bought a car in January that you received a free photo shoot local photographer of your choice. Even though we had bought it in December, he made sure the car deal didn’t go through until January 1st. This was a very well known deal from this auto group but I never knew about it. He got his car and I still got my photo shoot. That’s a healthy relationship dynamic, you sacrifice for the betterment of the both of you.

There has got to be something more going on in the third story. Why does the wife want good photos that badly? I think a therapist needs to get involved. It's just so bizarre. It's not just that she wanted them, she rebooked after the first attempt failed even though it would mean she can't see her own family for thanksgiving. From the sound of it, this is uncharacteristic of her (or at least was), so what changed?

its a status thing. being able to afford professionally done photos is something only wealthy people can do. by her getting those photos means that she can bluff to others that her family is better finically off then they really are. the money problem is new i think, and she doesn't want people to know because there is social stigma against the poor: its better to be broke and on the verge of homelessness and no one know it then for you to be known as poor. it's an old and insane form of thinking but some people are still acting like that

@@abiean222Yeah, pictures may not seem like they’re worth it to some but to others they do because, well, it’s whatever the individual sees as a luxury. Never underestimate how many moms see it as the ultimate prize, lol. I don’t get it myself because pictures like that are staged and static and don’t reflect reality… and we all have nice quality photography, if not professional quality, at our fingertips. One of the nicest photos I have of my youngest daughter, for example, was snapped by me on my phone while she was lucky enough to get to pet two Pomeranians… her favorite breed… while she was wearing a costume at a convention. She looked up with a smile of pure bliss and I caught it. I have a shot of my oldest walking with her bestie under a little pink umbrella, my son playing dress-up at a children’s museum, flat on the floor grinning at the bottom of a bouncer slide… my kids caught making hilarious faces in all sorts of places. No $300 photo shoot will get you that.

Status/peer pressure. My sister is the same. She is a single mum (receiving child support), but is unwilling to work. Even though she struggles for money as a result, she compares herself to the many working couples in her friendship group. She will buy my nephew the same brands of clothes as her friends, take him on the same day trips as her friends, etc. But then run out of money halfway through the month. It's exhausting hearing her complain about it all the time. Genuinely, from about the 15th of the month onwards, I avoid her, because she just whines about how she's run out of money.

I've spent some time thinking about scenarios like this. I'm not sure 'deserve' is the right word, considering death was a very real possibility, and _very_ few things deserve that. But at a bare minimum my sympathy would be restricted. It's the whole don't blame the victim topic. Did the victim deserve it? Absolutely not. Should the criminal be held accountable? Absolutely yes. Should society allocate resources to preventing crime, over say no one ever goes outside at night? Absolutely yes. Should I expect to intentionally stick my hand in a meat grinder and come out intact? To expect society to pay for my choices? We'll do the latter because we can't stop from caring, because no one _deserves_ it, but we're going to call you a moron while doing it.

For the last one he needs to copy off that email and file it with any form of document that shows how she abuses money. This could lead to serious issues in the future. It's best to leave, take that email copy and point out that she has no real sense of financial responsibility nor stability for your child. Courts look down on that kind of stuff. Also look at it this way. When your child is old enough to work some banks need an adult to still be on the account in order for it to be opened. If your wife is on that account how do you know she won't abuse that money as well? Think of it as protecting your child now in order to protect their future.

These people are insane, it was either the wallet or his life. I’m soooooo glad he seen the light and realized his mindset was really stupid...woooow, he lied to all these people ALL FOR HIS PRIDE AND EGO!? Good for OP for getting rid of this man-child. That being said, onto the story. I get how OP feels and I don’t doubt that it stung but OP shouldn’t mess up something that worked after the fact. OP could see this in a lot of ways. Like if her bff didn’t convince her to go on that date, they never would’ve clicked with each other, and they never would’ve ended up together. However, I still understand how OP feels about this though. See I like the ending of this story. All that was needed was a talk, sharing of each other's feelings, and now everything is ok. This story is extremely wholesome. Lmaooo I agree, this does feel like something from a Disney movie 😂 Third Story: Wow, OP is married to someone who is VERY selfish. Knowing they aren’t fully financially stable, she spends $300 on pics? What about getting the kids something for Christmas? What about bills or other necessities? OP's wife needs to get her priorites straighten out. Like I said, she is VERY irresponsible. I personally don't think we have enough information to truly say anything on the matter. All we really know is OP's family has been through some rough times and out of seemingly no where the wife wants pro pics done. His actions most definitely not becoming of a husband both drastically worsen the situation. Now they basically lay at the crossroad to divorce. Of which OP says he doesn't want but has put no effort into preventing it. Rather pressed the launch button sending the rocket to its impending Doom.🎉 It is one thing to disagree with her actions its another thing to boycott her and get her banned from an artist. He felt betrayed and she refused to accept that's how he felt and that amends needs to be made. Then it their fighting and game playing continued trying to outwin the other with family holidays etc. If they want to try to make it work they need to be open to the fact that they both are fault and need to learn how to hear others instead of listening to see when it's their turn to talk. I wish people would stop treating pity as something inherently condescending. Someone who goes on a "pity date" with you already holds you in high enough regard to want to protect your feelings. @@rubenweber6742 oh definitely. The "pity date" is a bad idea even if it does sometimes turn into this kind of story. But we've developed this trope of refusing pity or even being offended by it, and I think it's because of a perception that someone being careful of your feelings is deliberately exercising POWER over your feelings, implying that they think you're weak. And that's a sad way to interpret someone trying not to hurt you. I think this OP was already kind of insecure, and the phrasing of this revelation just made it worse because of the negative associations of "pity." I think it might not have been quite as bad for him if we didn't needlessly associate "pity" with "contempt."

  • @1Synner

It is inherently condescending, though. It is a subtype of sympathy evoked by another's distress and weakness. Though, unlike actual sympathy, which is about sharing another's feelings or having compassion for another whether it's evoked or not (or, getting on equal footing emotionally), it is simply a reactionary emotion only make the person feel bad about the individual that's being pitied (whatever their negative situation would be). It MAY lead to actual action that can eventually mend the distress, but it's not always the case. In the end, it's still puts the pittier on a temporary emotional pedestal as they, unknowingly or not, look down on the one that said person deems to be pittied Further, utilizing pity to shelter another's feelings is quite a bit more damaging in the long run than telling someone the truth of the matter. Consider the last story in this video. If they (wife and wife's BFF) would have pitied OP and tried to shelter his feelings or cover it up, it would have left an uncertainty that could have scarred the relationship. However, because they actually sympathized with OP, were open and honest, and actually compassionate and understanding of his feelings, it was able to heal. If you really care about them, sympathize and be honest. Pity the fool, don't pity the unfortunate.

Story 3: OP needed to divorce their wife yesterday. As a child of divorced parents, I knew for years before it was official that my parents were miserable together and it stressed me out to the point I refused to be interested in dating or marriage. 15 years later, I still would rather die alone and unloved than be in a shitty relationship for more than a day after I need to leave. Kids need parents as their best selves, which is not guaranteed in a marriage. OP has plenty of years to have a bond with their daughter; split custody won’t destroy a bond forged in steel.

Story 3: Memories will always matter more than the photos. I don't remember most of the things that happened around the photos of me that are still in my house with the exception of one. But, that was because of something that happened with my friend and I that day. The rest are just emotionally insignificant to me.

My father is/was a martial artist his whole life off and on for some periods. He is also a hot head with anger issues. He always used to tell us growing up that he got into more fights and trouble when he wasn't training/learning than when he was. Learning to fight is only part of it as I understand, most of it is to do with the discipline and control you learn. So BF in story 1 was really truly in a dodgy situation and clearly doesn't have the training. OP, in a twisted sense of the concept, was the better martial artist lmao.

Will you control/use your fear, or will you let fear control you? Give it a try, and do your best. Get advice from your parents and learn from their successes and their failures. The RomCom story was actually painful for me. my last relationship was also perfect. he said I was the best GF he ever had and we had a lot in common. But then I realize apparently he was looking for something different. Apparently according to him, a perfect relationship meant no arguing. We barely even argued, the last time we argued I was asking if I could bring my oculus to his birthday party and he said no because there would be no room. I kept trying let him know it would be fine but he kept on insisting no. so I gave in and stopped but he kept bringing it up so I said "ok I get it" and that when he decided that there was no future for us and broke up with me ON HIS BIRTHDAY. Before the oculus argument and also pushed me into therapy, I went to 5 sessions and all of a sudden claimed therapy wasn't working because we had that oculus argument. I told him we needed to talk about this behavior he was having but he didn't talk to me for 2 months because "he wasn't ready to talk". then he goes to universal with his friend and his friend's GF and I find out they all double dose on edibles and they were all so high out of their mind that his friends GF past out and he almost assaulted her (according to the friend who was apparently still sober). and our friend group disowned him after that. and what did he do? came running back to me crying that he lost his friends and that he took me for granted. I told him I don't know if we could be together anymore but we'll just be friends for now because I was the only one he had left, and that in fact HE was the one that needed a therapist. He was agreeing with me and promised to find one. Now? He's not talking to me and I found out that he still doesn't have a therapist and just bought a PS5 GoW Ragnarok edition. I guess that's the name of his new therapist.... Sigh.... I don't know when I'll stop hurting over this but I've come to terms that we won't be together anymore. I feel like I wasted all my time with him just for it to be thrown away. He claims "I'll always remember the good times we had" but it just feels like that all the things we did together was an absolute waste because I had no reason to think anything was wrong, nor did he say anything was wrong. He just out of no where broke things off. So yes, I do feel like it was all a waste because I was out of the loop of what he actually wanted. So screw him. I don't know who the next person I'll meet will be but I'm not that hopeful. I'll meet them eventually. Just not when I'm still hurting.

For real. How y'all start out or even first impressions aren't indicators how the relationship will be. It's even more true the younger you are. The changes between 15 and 25 are astronomical. How my now husband and I got started is, frankly, pretty embarrassing on my end. I was way more drunk then intended and abandoned by my date (and ride) at an unfamiliar convention (he saw his ex gf with a new man and got so mad he left.... Without saying anything to me. Bullet dodged but wtf) Uber might have existed at this time but I was unfamiliar with it, plus lived pretty far out of town. I happened to stumble across my now husband, who was an acquaintance at the time who I've maybe met once or twice but I was beyond thankful for a familiar face. He realized my date wasn't with me anymore and quickly pieced together I was in a bit of trouble. He organized me a spot with a safe friend in the hotel the convention was in plus a change of clothes so I could sleep it off and make a sober decision in the morning of what to do since he also had to take his male roommate home and didn't want me to feel unsafe in a car with 2 unfamiliar men while intoxicated. Next morning I had a Vegas style hangover and prayed that was a dream but nope. I wanted to crawl under a rock and disappear but I couldn't let his kindness go without a "thank you" at least. He promised it was no problem and started talking to me like any friend would and refused to even tease me about it. If that embarrassing, terrible night wouldn't have happened, I wouldn't have my amazing husband now. If I would have listened to my first thoughts, I would have avoided him like the plague the rest of my life. I'm sure he had similar first thoughts like wow how sloppy! This girl is too old for this kind of stupidity, drama central, etc. Life is full of weird and wild twists and turns. If you find someone that helps you through them just be happy they're in your life, regardless of circumstances.

Story 1 - for me the biggest red flag was how he went nuts after the attempted mugging, and immediately went scorched earth on her, immediately turned his family against her and all their friends. The rest, I could probably ignore/get over as a partner, adrenaline and idiocy do some pretty extreme things to people's brains. But because he was embarrassed that his gf saved them both from a mugging, he decides to alienate her, spread lies, and go home to be with his mommy...

Last story: I can see both viewpoints here. Mom wants to make memories in a tangible way, and that desire isn’t wrong. She’s going about it in a harmful way. If it had been a spur of the moment impulse buy and she had taken OP’s concerns about finances into account, apologized, and let the refund from the first photographer be the end of it, I would say no buttholes here. The fact that she doubled down and insisted on spending money set aside for emergencies to get professional photographs makes her a butthole. Heart was in the right place, method was wrong.

Last story... well be that as it may if the guy gets to see his kid 50% of the time (if he's lucky), it's still a better outcome than for their kid to grow up with parents that don't love each other because they can't trust each other. This breach of trust could and most likely will lead to more backstabbing actions from either end, that goes even as far as cheating or constant suspicions of cheating. That's no way to live through a marriage or life, even less so if the kid learns that that is like the ideal relationship. So yeah, divorce is a tough thing to go through with all things considered. But it's the better outcome in the long run in my eyes.
