Quirky San Francisco Street and Neighborhood Names | How To Say It Like A Local

San Francisco Bay Area has a lot of quirky street names and neighborhoods with unusual pronunciations. Plus we've got some pretty picky preferences when it comes to nicknames and how to refer to places. I've been getting some wrong! How many did you know about?

Excellent video, but ... one word you should really learn to pronounce correctly is "pronunciation"! It's not "pronounciation."

agree about San Fran. I try to explain to people who aren't from the bay and they don't' get it. it's like going to NYC and calling it Yorkie or some nonsense. you would get weird looks. same here. it just grates. Ghirardelli with hard g is correct. it's also correct in Italian. the whole point of putting the h is to keep the g hard because it would sound like J when preceding I or e.

There is a book titled "San Francisco Street Secrets" that tells the stories of the various streets. It's a fun read as it includes a lot of dirt.

The Avenues was used as collective term for Richmond and Sunset Districts. Valencia St and Valencia Gardens were pronounced "Valencha". Polk Gulch and Eureka Valley are now archaic. South of the Slot was used going way back as a colorful term for South of Market. Little Hollywood is little known, but truly cool, Lots of American flags on patriotic holidays. Saint Mary's Park (neighborhood and actual park) is in danger of cancelation by the Khmer Woke as they labor to enshrine the anti-Christ as king of the world. There was no Design District, Theater District, SOMA, South Beach, South Park, Mission Bay. These were created to boost real estate interests. Or the creative creative industries that has prospered off the tech/real estate/art student/biotech boom.

Ca-BRILL-O is correct. Cabrillo is a Portuguese name and Portuguese pronounce "LL" with a 'L' sound not Spanish 'y' sound.

How prescient you were about this being a long quarantine: it's April 20, 2021, and we are still in various stages of renormalizing, with each county open, opening, or still closed, depending on the presence of CoVid, etc. Spaced indoor seating allowed in Martinez, spaced outdoor seating in Alameda County. We will get through this!

Thank you for this. Good to have a review. I think I'm using the preferred version for all of those after 30+ years here, though I'm sure I'm saying St. Helena wrong. You didn't cover "Arguello" which majority seems to be "Ar-gwel-o" while I insist on "Ar-gwey-o". I'll do "Ca-bree-o" as well if I'm feeling grumpy.

I have never heard anyone refer to the Financial District as fee-dee, but I have heard people pronounce FiDi as both parts rhyming with the words lie, die, sigh

There is tons of people that call it Frisco. It is also infused with the music... RBL Posse, San Quinn, Mac Dre, Rappin 4 Tay, and there is many who grew up in the city that will call it Frisco...

Down south in LA, we have a peninsula also, the Palos Verdes Peninsula which fun fact the current occupant of the White House built one of his National golf courses on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Ten years ago, my mom and I went to the wedding of family friends @ the golf course which overlooks a few of the holes and the ocean. During dinner, my mom asked one of the servers if he ever came there,my mom had asked it partly curious and partly as a joke. The server said that he was there the previous week.

I rewatched the Hawaiian style restaurant episode with the guava malasada and chicken katsu. You mentioned "dogpatch" area. Where is this. I've never heard that location term.

Hey Zeene: I enjoyed your sailing video. While we'll have to wait for the Shelter In Place Orders to lift, I'd like to suggest that you create a video on the various types of Bay Cruises available. Seeing San Francisco from the water is huge fun, and we have tons of options available.... Thanks....
