Quirky and Comfy: Citroen C3 Aircross Review

The Citroen C3 Picasso lived a long and popular life, but now it's dead as people have transitioned from MPVs to SUVs. This has paved the way for the new C3 Aircross SUV. It provides bold looks, strong personalisation, and Citroen's Advanced Comfort platform - but is the car any good?
The model tested here is the range-topping Flair, which is fitted with the 1.6 litre, turbocharged BlueHDi diesel engine, which offers 118bhp with 300Nm of torque. Power is mated to the front wheels (there's no four wheel drive option) via a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The Flair model offers features such as 7" touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, 17" alloys, two tone roof, climate control, keyless entry and start, cruise control and autonomous emergency braking to name a few.

I am 64 yrs of age, been driving all my life and had more cars than I could possibly remember. This is one of the best all round cars I have ever owned. We have the Flair with 133 bhp engine and since new in June have covered nearly 10000mls at an average 47 mpg. I also drive a Porsche Caymen and I make no excuses when I say for a fun drive the Aircross is simply a great car. Next car will be no other than a replacement of the same. My wife is 5ft 2inch and I am just over 6ft and we both find the car amazing to make adjustments to find what is best for both of us. My wife simply loves it. The gear box was tight when new but is now silky smooth.....these mechanical things have to be run in. Tight bends at the legal limit it takes in its stride, SO ‘ jiggly ride ‘.....not sure where your coming from. Steering is a joy and not heavy and sluggish like so many ( Fiesta etc). A fun drivers car.

Hi Michael, thanks for watching. I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree about the ride. For what it's worth, I carried passengers who came to a similar conclusion, but on the whole I'd still class it as comfortable. I'd also disagree about the Fiesta having heavy and sluggish steering. It's good to hear you having positive experiences with the C3 Aircross though, thanks for commenting 👍

@@ArtByEmilyHare hi, still definitely a fan but have moved on to the C5 aircross. Needs must at moment with grandchildren. We will almost definitely go back to the C3 when downsizing. My friends have your car and I find in comparison the yeti is a noisy ride in comparison and a hard ride. Hope helps, good luck.

@@michaelpullen8527 Thank you Michael that is SO useful to know! I've heard the reviews saying the c3 was noisy, but the yeti is very noisy on motorways and yes, pretty hard ride! Hopefully once we get the yeti fixed we will be able to go and try out the aircross!

Reasonable review but I have to say that I've never had a problem with operating the hand brake! I drove 350 miles up from the south coast and never had a bad back nor did I feel dis connected from the front wheels. I've got a top of the range Flair model with the 130 BHP petrol engine which comes with the 6 speed gearbox which I find superb. I've got every bell and whistle fitted and I absolutely love it!!

Great review. Love the look of the C3 aircross in brighter colours. Amazing diesel economy, much better than the 1.2 3-cylinder petrol.

Hello Andy, thanks for watching. Quite often I find that I'm around 10-15 off the official MPG (unsurprisingly) so I was pleasantly surprised that I got so close to the official figure. Even more so as this car is turbocharged and from experience turbo powered cars are the worst culprit for not achieving their manufacturer stated MPG.

Nice review mate. Got this Flair model for my son about one month ago and to tell you the truth we love it. The only gripe I had was that sometimes the keyless start would play up and wouldn't start after going for a short run and stopping and trying to restart. I think it may be because when I was stopping the engine I had my foot on the clutch when it didn't need to be? Overall for comfort it is one of the best.

The handbrake is the same as our Peugeot 2008 and was designed that way to enable access to the ‘grip control’ dial. The French do character, the Asians, not so much.

As I have company cars, you find going from other cars to C3 aircross is strange, but after a week, you find other cars strange 🤣 the Aircross has a stiffness suspension over the standard C3 to help with hight, My standard flair came with camera? Other things, folding mirrors, heated front window, back tilting rear seats, ect

Boxy, van-like cars are great from that perspective. Every inch is made use of, particularly at the back. As discussed on your driving preview, I also like the softer ride. It's beyond me how most manufacturers think a 'sporty', harder ride will work on our crap roads.

Yep, I hand a Honda Jazz (Mk1) as a company car, and I sometimes had to get out of the car and work out how such a small thing on the outside could seem so big on the inside.

Has anyone noticed that the 6speed gearbox is located about 3-4 cm far to the front? I mean that when you put the 4th is where you would had a zero speed in a different car. I bought a c3 aircross and this is the only disadvantage i see. I have to straight up my hand in order to put the 3rd or 5th.

How come your C3 Aircross doesn't have automatic gear box and your is diesel not 1.2l petrol?

  • @CarObsession

Hello Ng Alex, thanks for watching. At the time of recording, that engine and gearbox was available for the C3 Aircross, but it seems as if that engine isn't available anymore. I believe that's because the 1.6 litre diesel was dropped, and was replaced by the new 1.5 litre diesel.

Hi Saladdin, thanks for watching, but I think your comment is unfair. I gave this car four of five stars on my website and I used to own a French car (Renault Clio in case you're bothered) so I don't have an issue with French cars. In this review I complimented the car's styling, space/practicality, comfort, the engine's performance and fuel economy, visibility, and safety so I'm a bit perplexed.
