Quilted Maple Stratocaster | DIY Leather Dye Fire Burst | How To In Real Time!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I show you how I used Angelus leather dye to stain the top of a quilted maple Stratocaster style guitar body. It's much more simple that you think it would be and just requires some imagination and creativity with colors.
Huge shoutout out to Tye at Shock the Fox ( tinyurl.com/yuxw3595 ) for sending me this quilted maple top. This guitar wouldn’t be the same without it.

That's one of my favourite finishes I've ever seen, it's making me think a green or blue flame would be awesome!
My wife says your narrating is like Bob Ross. You are the Bob Ross of wood working. Keep up the great videos.

The most congenial case of "swamp ash" I've ever seen! Nice work Nick!!

Hahaha it’s not that bad of a case
Wow you killed it! Looks amazing
Looks fantastic but like you said, after the pickguard goes on it's a different story. The only thing that makes sense on a strat (traditional routing where the pickguard must go on) is a Martin style burst where it closely follows the contours of the body.
That was wicked cool! My son was thoroughly impressed with the quilting and colors to chose too. Very neat process!

Damn !! One the best washes I have seen in hours of intrigue with others.!! Wish there was a final back and sides and gloss finish vid . Excellent Fades Brother !!!
Wow!! That's amazing man! Awesome job. 🤙🏽
That quilting is incredible. Great process video, Nick.

The quilt on that top is amazing! I couldn’t believe how much the black enhanced the figure.

Thanks, Bruce! You can’t be sleeping on the black dye 😜
That is gorgeous. I'm going to try to do this on my next build.
Really nice dude looks amazing.

Now that is a work of art! You did a fantastic job on this! The colors really make the black pop. I also agree that doing just red with the black would look awesome too. BTW, love the flannels! 😁

Thanks, Jon! I think a black cherry top would be a cool look and flannels for life!
Really amazing
Beauuutiful job 😍✌️
Nice work.
Like the Bob Ross of iodine and wood. Looks awesome Nick!

My dude! Thanks!
I received my Angelus Leather Dye starter set yesterday to use on woodturning projects. It is a great product! Much more intense pigment than General Finishes waterbased dye and it doesn't raise the grain. For a little more than $50 you can choose 12 colors to experiment with.
I am going to try this exact method lol awesome vid!

thx!

This would be sick with black hardware and a dark neck like rosewood, ebony or wenge.
Very nice job...I would think you would start with the lightest color and work towards the darker color...but looks awesome
Nice job. I wanting to do something similar for a snare drum. May I ask what you use for your top coat varnish? Thanks.
Very nice video, I have a quick question, after this stain I can paint a clear Matt Spraying ? Because I like the Matt Finish
Better on a rear routed guitar. The entirety of the stain will pop. Great colours btw.
Do you shake your dyes before use? It seems to me that rear mounted electronics and side hole for the input jack would allow for a full quilted top without the use of a pick guard….that would be beautiful..
So good man! Where’s the finished product at?
What prep was done to the wood besides sanding, e.g., sealing conditioner? I’ve worked with stains but not dyes before.
Awesome job Nick but I wish you would’ve finished it to see the final finish and see what products you used to do the job. What black lacquer, sanding, sealer, and clearcoat product did you use? I am thinking about doing a Strat myself and I really like what you did but I’m new to it and since you are a woodworker, I believe I could trust the products and the process that you would present, I still would like to know the product you would suggest if you could reply to my post. I would really appreciate it. By the way I subscribe to your channel.
is there a follow up of this after topcoat? i gotta see that beauty with some gloss on it!
Great job, this guitar looks nice! Did you practice on something else before doing this on the guitar?
@KeyWoodworks

Thanks! I did a similar style burst on my bass I made at the end of last year but other than that, just went for it.
Do you assemble the guitar before you dye it to make sure that it plays ok? Then disassemble?
Question with these Angelus dyes. If you mix neutral with just a few drops of black will it just be black or will it dilute down to a thin greyish? Basically can I do that and get a faux sand back look? For a thin assed career that can't be sanded back at ALL, would that work? (Obviously a newbie)
So nice that the stain is acrylic or alcohol?
When that red went on 👌🏼 holy smokes that looked so sick

I need to do a black and red top soon now 😜
Could aquarel paint work? Or is that to much waterbased?
Do you have a video of the final finish including the clear lacquer?
@KeyWoodworks

You can see it on my Instagram a while back
Did you do anything to prep the top like raising the grain with water ? Or just applying the dye and sanding?
@KeyWoodworks
Жыл бұрын
Just sanded up to 180 and then applied the dye.
Top left horn was to sanded out of the black. Not bad though 😉
Where did you get the quilted maple body ?

What is the name of the red dye please.
Where do you buy the Dye you use from?

It looks so incredible....it's a shame to cover any of it up...🥴which made me think that a crystal clear pickguard...may allow full view of the beautiful quilted burst you created. Just a, "what if" thought.🌱

Can you please list the dye names?
I was curious why you put the black on then sanded it off.....until you started putting on the red, lol

it quite simple... but need patience
Was the Bob Ross style narration intentional? xD

There's a skull in the middle on the bottom 💀
IT ENDED UP BY LEAVING A CRAZY UGLY PAINT... YELLOW IS ESSENTIAL AND MUST BE APPLIED FIRST. RED FOLLOWS BLACK. HOWEVER, THE BLACK APPLIED BEFORE MUST BE SANDED ALMOST COMPLETELY. STAY SHIRT PORC TO CAT
