I love the way a quilted, flamed, and tigers eye tops look. I picked up a bunch of veneers and have been experimenting with different figured woods. I made a few pen holders using solid figured woods. I have been using Keda wood stains with an epoxy resin clear. I can't get use to the true oil finishes. I'm looking for a nice deep finish with a high gloss. Controlling the thickness of the epoxy is giving me a nice clear coat. I have learned a lot from your videos and just wanted to day thanks. Once I get more tools, I'll be working with caps instead of veneers.

A trick i learned is when dying maple, you need to "condition" the wood with water if youre using dyes. Its helped reduce the blotching when i refinished gunstocks. Maple is a dense wood and having quilted maple like that wont help. Using warm water as a first coat pops the grain and lets the dyes penetrate better. Another solution is too look at how you mix your dyes. I used Keda dyes and mixing them with alcohol produced the most blotching.

The thing with curly maple is... It darkens with age. Turns golden, amber. Its always a good idea to go a shade lighter than you think. All finishes will add their own amber. Your end finish is almost identical to what I would do building a figured maple reproduction furniture piece. There's even recipes online for creating relic type "antique maple" finishes. That top came out amazing !
