Quiet Generator Project

Quieting a loud generator for residential use.Total project cost- $1500 Suncast storage housing with" safe and sound" TM insulation. (Rockwool) and expanding spray foam. I used a double 30A breaker for the back feed and not a double 15A I am NOT a professional and this video was made only for an example. ALWAYS consult a professional first AND your local code official !

    Good enclosure but still very loud. Tolerable as you put it. I've seen a few videos about generator noise and the best enclosure was made by a Taiwanese farmer made of wood with a double cover with holes in alternate places to let out the heat and noise. Seems noise doesn't like to change direction so putting holes in different areas greatly reduces the sound. Your's look much better but his was much quieter. I would go with the much quieter one myself. Total cost for his was about $150. Thanks for sharing...

    We are experiencing the longest blackout since we lived here in 12 yrs. 3rd day now and everything running great. I had to run out and get some extra motor oil for it, so I should of had extra on hand. A small amount if plastic ( about 1 in.) melted above the muffler exhaust. I could have opened up the cutout in the plastic for the exhaust a little more and used a larger piece of metal panning to carry the vent. That's about it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed at this point.

    Why not use 4" gas vent pipe, like what is used to exhaust gas water heaters. Its double walled so it it should not melt your box.

    Here is a reminder about portable generator safety: this is only a reminder for anyone who use portable gas/propane generators. This is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generator during a power outage. Everyone has to see this safety reminder. Every year after hurricane and winter storms, there were reports on the news that many people have died each year when using generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution during a power outage. There were reports about deaths when using generators when the power was out. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Here’s an advice about generator safety: please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not permit a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2WetpV6fqi0pqw.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps and everyone understands the safety requirements. Thank you. Be safe.

    Good ideas, would love to see a clip on how you hooked to inside panel. BTW, I suggest you get some screen wire and cover ALL holes, I recently purchased a property with a B&S propane generator, I removed the covering and insects, dirt dobbers had went in tru the vent holes and built up nests inside, also from cutting grass with my mower, the mower had thrown grass clippings etc. into the housing through the vents. BTW, would also like to know the part numbers/sizes/identification of your connections from gen to the house. Thanks

    Seemed a little hard starting for a newer Generac. I pulled my ten-year-old Troy-Bilt out a couple of days ago to do some welding hadn't used it or change the fuel in it for a year and if fired on the second pull. I like you generator house oh, I've been setting up a similar small-scale version for my RV using a champion inverter generator.

    @Son of Liberty- Since it wasn't started for a while I gave it 3 light pulls just to get the internal parts lubricated. Then hard pulls to actually start the motor. On another note the generator setup and N.G conversion was new at that time and I was giving it 5 seconds of priming. That was too much. Since then I've reduced that to 2 seconds priming and it starts easier. You may not think it but you can "flood" the engine with N.G. just as you can flood an engine with gasoline.

    Update: I went out to check the oil level.and it needed to be topped off after 12 hrs.straight run. I noticed that some dust from the insulation is starting to collect inside. I guess from the fan pulling all that air past the insulation. Not a huge deal but I will probably add metal panning to the interior when this blackout is over.

    Great box! Thanks for sharing. I'm planning one now after we recently lost power for 5 days due to a storm that caused a number of down power lines from trees. The generator was a life saver but we know how loud they can be, and I had to quickly throw up a vented tent to protect it from rain one night. I was thinking of using RockWool as well after some research. Curious... have you ever measured the decibels with the shed opened and closed?

    Early in your video you noted a 3/4" x 1/2" galvanized bushing.... You should replace that with a steel bushing!!! The galvanized bushing will deteriorate due to a reaction with gas. NFPA 54 and 58 prohibit use of galvanized fittings and piping in gas systems because of this reason.

    They say with propane no galvanized fittings. brass is okay and black iron. I don't like black Iron because it rusts. I would rather use brass and propane. The government in a state of emergency or natural disaster they feel is bad. like a flood tornado hurricane or anything else they can cut the natural gas off, water and electricity. And then everyone with generators will be in a panic that rely on natural gas. A few years ago I saw the government declare a state of emergency in a area with a light dusting of snow it wasn't even icy. It was ridiculous maybe the local government did that to get some money and funding from the big government. And politicians can take this money where the promise to repay it and never repay it like usual. If it was me I would keep a natural gas line unhooked from my generator. Check out the stories of homes with a rare occurrence of high pressure natural gas that went past the regulator and filled up the homes with natural gas and exploded. Several homes exploded and caught on fire in different areas before. It's a pretty rare occurrence but it has happened it's better to be safe than sorry. And this is very dangerous if this happens there will be no homes left in some cases.

    Glad it helped. No, no problems so far. If you add the tri-fuel conversion kit be sure to break it in using Gasoline. Than switch over to the Lp. When you first convert it, the LP regulator will need to be adjusted. Once you have it tuned in there is a lock nut to keep that setting adjustment. After that it's just a matter of priming the carb. with lp at start up. There is a push button on the reg. that allows free flow LP into the carb.. For mine I hold it in and count to about 4 and than pull.

  • @robertcuthill8484

    @robertcuthill8484

    I ran the generator for 5 days straight and the only effect the heat had was around the engine exhaust (dryer vent). The plastic got a little warped in one spot so I used a larger piece of metal panning in that high heat area to carry the vent. I didn't think that was too bad though considering the continuous length of time it ran. Originally there was only about 1/2 in clearance where the metal exhaust exits through the plastic wall. That was just too close. The fan itself moves a LOT of air so fresh is always coming through the box as the hot is being blown out. So the only small problem was that one hot spot at the exhaust location.

    I remember coming across a small stand-up stand-alone generator by Briggs & Stratton. It was about half the size of a regular standalone generator or a third smaller about. I think it was about 7000 - 8000 Watts and about $1,800 but I'm pretty sure that wasn't with a transfer switch hoses and a few other things. Lowe's had this unit but you would get hit pretty hard by the time you get it out the door and taxes. Of course I have seen it online but I don't remember if that's the shipping handling and Freight included. Luckily I'm able to get by with a lot smaller generator on propane. Also on another comment I said in a natural disaster or state of emergency like a tornado, hurricane, flood, snow storm or gas leak they could cut your natural gas, water and electricity off. And most of these utilities are now controlled by satellite like my water and electricity. And I'm sure Natural Gas will probably be controlled by satellite next if it's not already that way.

I used a certified disconnect (lock out) between the main "In" breaker and the generator feed breaker so there is no chance of power being feed back into the lines when the generator feed breaker is in the "on" position..Long story short you can have either the generator feed breaker on or the utility "main" on but never both at the same time.
