The funny thing with Mewtwo is that the guy who wrote the screenplay, Hideki Sonoda, confirmed on Twitter that this movie's Mewtwo is indeed a different one from the first movie's Mewtwo Which still leaves open the massive plotholes of WHY and HOW there's another Mewtwo, but I mean... coma dreams... so I digress

Well you see, as Mewtwo mega evolves, it implies that we've slipped out of the universe we were following up until now and into the similar yet different anime version of the mega universe. Meaning a similar yet different Mewtwo. As the musical number said, "one story ends and another begins."

@@Blunder-Blue Yeah there was a special episode that followed up the first movie. Which also makes the plotholes worse, because Ash remembers meeting Mewtwo from THAT time but not- Y'know, maybe it's easier just to say "coma" and be done with it.

This is the most pokemon movie shaped pokemon movie, and it feels like you can really see the mold lines on the plastic at this point. Well we had some fun out there now, didn't we

Two points abotu the Mewtwo weirdness in this movie (because I am full of Pokemon trivia) - The Mewtwo in this movie is a different one, yeah - the reason this is the case is because of a dispute with the estate of Takeshi Shudo, writer of the early movies and parts of the original anime (and a really fascinating guy, look into him some. Amongst other things, he was incredibly frustrated with Lugia's voice in M02, as he designed the Pokémon to have a motherly vibe) over the licencing of the character - this would eventually be resolved as the original movie Mewtwo appears in a 2020 episode of the anime. Also, this movie was revealed AND released before Mega Evolution and Mega Mewtwo X were even formally revealed (Megas were revealed in August 2013, and Mewtwo X in September 2013, while this new form was revealed in April 2013 and the movie came out that July), which is why that form doesn't appear at all. Because we ddn't know what Megas were, they put a lot of mystery in marketing behind what it was supposed to be until the formal reveal of Megas. On a personal level, when I was a kid, I missed the first airing of it in the UK and forgot to record it. I was so sad because it was the first movie I had missed. I still haven't watched it or any future movie except Detective Pikachu.

Iirc iron tail was part of Pikachu's short list of moves since about half way through gen 3.

The talk about moves reminded me of an episode Ash battles another pikachu with his own, and the rival one used swift then followed up with dig. The look on both their faces were basically “Oh I forgot those were choices.”

It's still so funny to me that they were so checked out for this movie that they couldn't even be bothered to come up with an interesting setting. They just made boring old Central Park in a region that already had an analogue for Central Park.

My head canon why there more than one mewtwo is that the original files to the mewtwo project is in github. Mewtwo is open source community built pokemon

OKAY so this mewtwo is not the same one from the first move, it much like m1 mewtwo was in the anime as a non ash centered episode (also ash does remember mewtwo from movie 1 because of a TV special where ash basically said "hey what's the point in making us forget?" and mewtwo goes damn you right- This is relevant and canon, because every movie until "i choose you" is a part of the animes canon, ex: there was an episode where they just cut to the water city from heroes and show latias and friend hanging out)

This Mewtwo is a different one. There was an another made by Team Plasma stealing some DNA remants of Mewtwo from Team Rocket. It was explained in a one off anime tie episode starring a side character from the then current season. A trainer who trained a bunch if Eeevulotions and won the then current League of the season. Also there was ANOTHER anime soecial called Mewtwo Returns where he dud not eioe anyone's memory,(except tmTeam Rocket's), so Ash would recognize who the male Mewtwo is.

Every time I heard he word "genesect", I think about that old visual novel where you can always choose to genuflect. Anyway, great video as always.

There's so many little things about this movie that made me feel insane. Why is the city's power grid below a brand new location that was just built? Why did we build this on top of the power plant? What is in the city that needs constant power that if it's severed causes an explosion? Why was Eric surprised when the power went out considering he was actively trying to deal with the problem that would lead to the power going out? Why did Mewtwo say "I'm just wasting my breath" in regards to trying to talk the Genesect down when you aren't talking you're telepathizing? Why did we get multiple Chekov's gun checks for a rocket launcher but then not use it? And most importantly of all, why did Dan barely reference Feraligator despite him doing work through the whole movie?

A pokken movie would whip so much I'm mad it'll never happen

At least it's better than the last one, haha. I'm going to need these to really pick up or something. The worst DB thing at least still had characters interacting or dumb stuff to laugh at. Also, there was a 20 minute Prologue released for this movie. It's set before Mewtwo meets Ash in the movie and is all about Mewtwo's history, goals, and how it became the strongest Pokémon. Don't know why they didn't just include it with the movie lol.

I think we all collectively forgot that one Dragon Ball movie set after GT and focused on Pan's grandson. Paraphrasing the above comment, at least the worse DB movies like the original Dragon Ball ones and even Evolution had characters talking. The GT movie (I think it was a TV special?) just didn't.

I'm just assuming this Mewtwo is a different one because we're in a different timeline/reality or something.

Oh hey the last Pokemon movie I watched...also I think the last time I watched the anime (Maybe I've seen a random episode of X&Y but I barely remember). From what I've seen Sun & Moon anime had some good animation and I heard the last anime where Ash fights Leon was alright.

But WHY TOP MAN KEEP EXPLODING??? HE JUST LIL BOY LEAVE HIM ALONE

Mewtwo stumbled into the hidden valley of the Ditto, that's why there are more Mewtwo now.

Pretty sure they just have a second Mewtwo running around in this universe now

@@ToastyMozartThey directly tell you in the movie that it's a different Mewtwo made by a different group of scientists. It's not ambiguous, the movie shows it to you.

Yeah I doubt Team Rocket will play a significant role in "Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm".

My only connection with this movie is a memory of walking past my brother watching the Pokemon anime, and Mewthree being there for some reason with the different voice. I don't know whether it was a movie tie-in episode or the actual end of this movie, but that's all I've got. Time to learn what I probably didn't miss.

I feel like if you wanna compare something from Pokemon to the DBZ Trunks special, it should be the Mirage Pokemon special not the Raikou one.

These movies let legendary Pokemon talk, even when it doesn't make sense. The earlier movies typically just allowed Psychic legendaries or those with good reasons (the imaginary Entei) to talk, and didn't spend several movies straight introducing new one's that could. We are on a BAD streak as of this episode.
