It's an awesome tool when you want cool fog. When I built mine a few years ago, I used an ABS toilet flange on each end rather than a dryer vent because it was heavier duty.
Nice!! I always wondered how to do that. Thanks a bunch. Will give it a try...
Amazingly useful .
Love the fact that you implement DIY projects with your photography. As always great videos.

I just made one of these (like 15 min ago, still freezing water so havent tried it fully yet), but Im just curious. How many liters are that cooler you have?

Can you double up the ice? Put a block of ice in the bottom of the cooler then still put dry ice on a grate to build a ceiling as well??? So you have a regular block of ice + a ceiling of dry ice???
This is super helpful.

Will this work with any water-based fog machine and juice or is something special about the Rosco brand?
Nice & cool tip. Thanks :)

OH MY GOD that's awesome. I would recommend using a disposable styrofoam cooler - easier to cut.

You should use a kitty litter box that's what we do it works awesome. Plus ice cubes allow it stay on the ground longer because it has to run through it more.

Hope you can use what you learned for your spooky shoots!
Why don't u patent a chill box then we could buy them from you, also several years ago at my wedding reception an ionizer of some sort was used in my display it was just dropped in water and instant fog like BAM! I don't know what that was and haven't been able to find one, do you know what I'm talking about?

Fun Fact: Fog machines will set off smoke alarms.

Copy that!! If you’re EVER doing smoke in a venue ensure the fire alarm has been isolated. Could be expensive otherwise...

once i set off my smoke alarm, cause the steam from my shower lol.
Wouldn't filling a few two L bottles with water and freezing them be... less messy? or even a 4L jug of water.

That's a great idea, Rob! Let me know how it goes! I just might try that myself!
anyone recommend a good ratio of VG to water for thick fog? is 30% good?
@TheSlantedLens

Very Thick Smoke: 30% Glycerin | 70% Water Thick Smoke: 20% Glycerin | 80% Water Less Thick Smoke: 15% Glycerin | 85% Water

@@TheSlantedLens cool thanks, I did the 30% - set off the smoke alarms! So gonna try the ice method.

"They're pretty hard to find" 5000 youtube fog chiller vids later lol ; ) It helps the effect if you leave a 1 inch gap between the fog machine and the inlet. that's what the vortex fusion product instructions say that most of these DIY chillers are based on. yours is more like the original DIY 'fog on the rocks' which predated it fwiw. for my $40 worth + DIY time for a $120 vortex fusion knockoff if the fog doesn't lay low I do like the lingering atmosphere sometimes better. it should be noted use a low wattage fog machine so it doesn't shoot it thru too fast not giving it a chance to chill. happy fogging ^v^

Please be careful with dry ice folks, especially if your model is low to the ground. The CO that's dissipated by the dry ice can push away the oxygen and cause suffocation. P.S.: You could also just fill up the cooling box with warm water and throw dry ice in, you'd only need an exhaust hole.

That is correct. I was doing this with a block of ice and it worked. No problem there. Thanks
