Quickstruts KYB vs DURALAST Pontiac Vibe Toyota Matrix

UPDATE….so I started hearing a subtle clunking. Not on hard bumps…but more so on very small ones at lower speeds. I thought it was maybe a plastic fender liner or something. Thought it was too subtle to be an end link but I decided to change those out anyhow. Still there. Then someone suggested I check the but atop the strut. Im thinking to myself “no way. These are relatively new (about 15k miles/7 months ago). Well…site enough, it was a bit loose. At least a good quarter turn worth. Sound is gone. But….not I sometimes feel like I’m hearing a much quieter version of that me sound. Perhaps the mount is no good now? I drove it for maybe a week….mostly around town. Maybe a couple hundred miles total. Then drove it back home (east Kansas to southern Illinois) about 375 miles where I figure out it was the nut. Anyhow….so….KYB as suspected is not what it used to be. I guess checking this nut is supposed to be a regular maintenance item?????
This is not an in depth comparison…just relaying my experience in installing Duralast Quickstruts (LS34-84091R) only to find one of them was defective. I’m not bashing autozone or duralast, indeed they made hood and let me exchange them for the KYB Strut-Plus (ASR4117). But…it speaks a bit to their quality control.

KYB is headquartered in Japan and it's common knowledge that Japanese companies usually have more quality control and higher standards than corporations based in other countries.

Great review.. algorithm brought me here..but i liked it so staying!.. anyways i am running kyb struts on my matrix and love em..BUT.. you know that comment you made about the top hat not spinning freely and it felt like better quality..lol..ya me too..but that resistance is a rubber washer binding between the mount and the hat bearing and on my carin about a year it started making a creeking sound and it drove me crazy trying to diagnose the noise because my car is in 100% shape and couldn't figure it out for a few days and finally ripped out EVERYTHING to find the noise..ya.. everything..the inner/outer tie rods..ball joint..swaybar links..struts..and thats what it was..so if you get a noise that's what it is..and if you have a spring compressor pull the things and replace the rubber washers under the strut caps with the correct one so it spins freely like the duralast ones because that's how its supposed to spin.

Hmmm….im not sure it’s supposed to move liek that. Everyone I’ve talked to (seasoned vibe and matrix veterans) seem to indicated it shouldn’t move. And pretty much every matrix or vibe (or Corolla) I’ve picked in a junkyard…I tryo to move them and they don’t move. Anyhow…,I’ll kee your worlds in mind though. If I do anything more strut wise…,im gonna put new Toyota struts and mounts in my old springs.I think that’s the only way to truly get the best quality trouble free ride. I think ALL these manufacturers cheap out on the mount/bearing on their quickstruts. Even kyb. It’s just not as good as oem Toyota. And it doesn’t matter that kyb was the oem manufacturer….ALL these aftermarket parts, whether Denso or kyb etc..,they someply do not make parts for the aftermarket world the exact same as the o rd they make for Toyota. That’s just how business works. Thanks for commenting! Oh…one other thing. Some Not have after the install of the kyb j was getting a. Subtle popping noise at slower speeds on smaller bumps. Sort of like end links but not quite (I replaced those though even though the duralast were barely a year old. Sound still there). Someone finally suggested I check the but stop the strut. Yup….was a tad loose. So….not sure what’s up with that. This was a quickstrut so nothing to do with me torquing it or anything. I haven’t checked it in a long time. Sound seems gone but sometimes j feel like I still here it. So….there’s kyb aftermarket for you. Actually j pulled nice looking factory struts from a low miles (130k) vibe in a junkyard. I’ll prolly put those in before buying oem struts

@@tedtan6449 hmmm. Not sure what you’re referencing with the junkyard comment. But..,,it’s relevant cause I just did replace these Kyb with some oem I got from a junkyard about 8 months ago. It was really clean, 130k miles. Was def having some issues recently. Put on new balljoints tie rod ends and end links…ALL oem Toyota. And I have oem control arms I was ready to swap out the duralast with. Anyhow…. When I removed the drivers side, the mount was really really stiff so it definitely needed to go. So I got about I don’t know 60,000 miles out of these KYB’s. Feel better having a nice pair of OEM even with 130,000 miles. I mean my XRS Matrix has the original everything in the front end and it drives really smooth for a car with 255k miles.

Yeah but they’re not what they used to be either. And their aftermarket world products aren’t nearly as good as any OEM stuff they ever made/make for Toyota

@@AmeriFanPicker They needed it because they were knocking like crazy. The new ones solved the problem, but one side started making noise. I did the control arms and some more parts. I'm not a novice when comes to cars. They don't making any good quick struts for Lexus unless you buy oem, but kyb is oem so compressed the springs and put the new ones in. The crazy thing is that it isn't making any noise anymore even over bumps. I haven't checked for leaks since they were installed, but I think they are fine. I didn't give up on kyb because I just bought some kyb sr4227 for an suv. I haven't installed them yet, but I figured they would be better than Duralast. The Duralast got good reviews at Autozone, that's why I asked about them.

@@drjd2real yeah I mean the kyb are def better than duralast. But…and I say this for ALL aftermarket parts, what these oem manufacturers make for the aftermarket is NOT the same as what they make for oem applications. Like Denso etc.
