Must say that I was a little put off by the commercial stuff at the beginning, but I'm glad I stuck with it because this is a really good roundup for a beginner like myself. Thank you

One thing that is worth mentioning in the 1 vs multiple pickups dilemma is the problem of noise. When the blend knob is in the neutral position, this is not a problem, but otherwise even $1k intermediate basses can produce tons of noise, depending on where you play, how many active electric appliances you have in your household, how well the electrical wires are screened (and in old buildings, not much), etc. You can encounter such problems as well when playing live in certain venues. All in all, choosing a one-pickup setup should save you quite a bit of headache in the beginning.

I bought my first bass about 3 weeks ago. It was a Sterling Sting Ray. It sounds great, but I was having a hard time adjusting to the length of the bass. So, I went back to Guitar Center and bought a Sterling Sting Ray short scale. So much better. I have been playing guitar for 50 years and adjusting to the 34" scale of the full size bass is not easy. The 30" short scale is very comfortable.

I agree with you, I’m getting my 2nd Mustang bass (American) to go with my mex Mustang. I do also have a American special jazz bass.? I have had many shoulder surgeries and as a result both are frozen from a bone infection. My Mustang really helps. I have no rotation on both arms. 🇺🇸

I'd suggest a squier affinity bass.. As a starter bass they are hard to beat.. Good bass for a affordable price.. I started with a PJ version.

The more I learn I'm leaning towards getting an older Squier p-bass for $200 or so and then getting that Custom Shop 60's pickup for $130. Or that Geezer Butler pickup from EMG. Luckily there are lots of tutorials online or if it's too intimidating I'll take it to someone to have it installed. Deep bass is what I'm after and am learning to play walking bass lines for jazz and rockabilly standards. Old tone, rooty but smooth. I was looking at the CV 60's P-Bass but I think getting a decent Squier and putting in a custom shop pickup would produce a better instrument. What do you think, Tyler? I enjoy your channel and your love of the bass is palpable.

Tyler, what do you think of the Chowny basses? They have a few models that don’t seem to be extremely expensive. The Scott Whitley versions SWB-1 for instance, is that too fancy of a bass for a beginner? It’s hard to find any real user reviews of Chowny basses, other than what Chowny puts out.

Good call! It is indeed! It’s a great bass, super well made… I’d like the electronics to be a little “bigger” in passive mode, but having both classic J and MM fretless tones in one instrument covers it all! T

P.s. I don’t like your advice to start with a 4string. I think 4 strings are obligatory for guitar players who only play bass here and there. Here the muting is not as essential as on a 5 string. If you want to be a dedicated bass player, you should put in the extra effort to learn to mute the unused strings anyhow.

@@simonrass2961 That is some ridiculous and misinformed gatekeeping. No one can play a 4-string bass without muting correctly.

@@simonrass2961 each to their own! I would have struggled if I started on 5, and I play 5s almost exclusively live now! Muting is essential on either, but floating thumb is critical and the best way by a mile on a 5 string - and really difficult to get thrown into the deep end with! As with all of these everyone varies, but for a lot of the stuff I learnt when I started that 5th string would have sat unused and slowed me down… As per ‘Atomic Habits’, make it easy, and you’ll be much more likely to keep coming back for more! I recently bought a BB734, and i really struggle to find anything to complain about it. I prefer it over the 2k american fender i played for over half a decade. I also compared it to the BB234 and BB434 in the shop when i was buying it. I found both very good for their money, but the 734 was slightly better sounding, has an overall slightly better build quality and i like having a preamp (even though i rarely use it). But the 234 is definitely a very good starting bass.

i am searching for a good jazz bass around 900€ (about 700£) and the fender vintera 60s jazz bass caught my attraction. What is your opinion about it in terms of physical features? Do you think there are better j basses at such price?

The Vinteras are good basses, if a bit sticky on the back of the neck for me! I like them as they’re more vintage spec Js meaning the necks aren’t tiny, but still smaller than a p bass. I don’t like super skinny necks as I prefer my hand to be filled somewhat, it makes me more likely to observe proper technique with my thumb behind the fretboard! Are you willing to look second hand? T
