That is spot on with the drip edge. I used to do HVAC and we did all our own duct work and plenums. We also made drip edge on our benders for the roofers across the street. We made large flanges so lots of bonding area. The roofers loved it and used it as an demonstration piece when explaining why you should go with their bid. They were not wrong, they were the best because they ALWAYS did it right. More cost effective when you do a good job that generated buisness and never have to deal with the expense of a come back. 👍👍👍👍

Hello all, Just wanted to add my experience on this method. Way before this video back in 1998 I had a leaking built up tar and gravel roof on a slightly pitched addition to my house. I removed the entire old roof back to the rafters and installed sheathing, then I installed a cap a layer of peel and stick roll roofing ( I think it was a GAF product) and then a final layer of sand coated roll roofing. Since it was my own house I followed the instructions carefully and took my time rolling the surface with a 100 lb roller to ensure good adhesion. Well here we are in 2022 and the roof is still in great shape, hardly even find any sand in the gutter when I clean them.

Hi Doc ! I just wanted to thank you and your wife so much for all your videos which I have looked at over and over before actually believing I could do this. I have just finished my flat re-roofing project here in NB, Canada on a 9 ft x 18ft double sloped flat roof. I bought the GAF liberty cap sheet at home depot. They did not sell the base so I contacted a local commercial roofing supplier and bought some Elastoplex SA Y Polyglass as a base sheet. My challenge was to start on each end of my roof to overlap my way up to the peak to lay my final cap sheet. I also followed your advice and found myself a wonderful wife who helped me carry the rolls up the stairs (I'm a skinny dude lol), I cant carry them by myself. If you want I can share photos of my project to show anybody can do this. I'm a barber and I never thought I would tackle a project like this. Today it's raining, and it' great to see that the drip edge is working, no more leaks. THANK YOU for sharing a thing or two with us, bla bla bla Pat

Have to remember contractors have over head…..Liability insurance, WC insurance, truck insurance, payroll, and so on plus they need to make a profit……pay for the boat/vacation home…..yes some go for the throat in this area that’s why one needs to research costs and get several written estimates….the lowest is not always the best….neither is the highest……once work is started …..important the workers know someone is watching…..inspect the work if possible and have the contractor take detailed pictures of the finished job…….never pay the rest owed if the work is not done,or there are issues…..until completed….. Can be done if one has the balls and follows manufacture directions to the T…..and avoids falling off the roof……

Correction, in 2022 the trick is to find a roofer who will give you an accurate quote. They purposely leave a wood clause in there to replace rotted wood and then hit you in the end with a HUGE additional charge for wood replacement. Careful of this SCAM. He should inspect properly to get a relatively accurate estimate of addional charge and not go over 10% additional to the quote.

It's OK in a pinch if they need to save for a few months w.e. but in the long run when you keep doing patch work it adds up fast. Then when you do a replacement and have to add in all new wood now cuz the old stuff has rotted away. Your not saving so much anymore. My 7 year torch down Bitumen roof garage 20x20 is starting to leak. The "professional" roofer torched granulated Bitumen directly to a tar and gravel roof with the gravel removed. It is a flat roof and there is ponding of water which leads me to suspect why it is failing so soon. I want to fix it so where it will last 20 - 30 years. Should I put a sloped roof on top and then do a 2 ply Bitumen or what other suggestions would you have? Love your videos, thanks.

Ok, so torching directly to the existing build-up roof is a no no. The Torch Down will not adhere and start to wrinkle pulling the seams apart. If that is the case, then you need to cut the wrinkles so as to flatten out the surface. I suggest install a new commercial drip edge, over the existing membrane, and then torch directly to the old membrane, after cutting the wrinkles. The use screws with plates to fasten the old membrane properly to the deck Stagger the seams so you are not following the same pattern as the existing. maybe start with a roll cut at 18". No reason to slope the roof in the 1 st explanation. That is the easiest and less expensive way that will last. Only make sure you are melting the 2 layers together very well. That takes extra heat. 1. The other way would be to install tapered ISO insulation. 2. Then self adhering base 3. Commercial drip edge 4. Cap sheet torch granulated send me pics to 203 858 0080 so can give better advice or call

Doc thanks for sharing, would this be ok for flat roof that has walls ? my house is old and has that style where there's walls, I see in this video the edge ends straight, would the peel and stick work if It has to go up a short wall and then re-install the roof tiling

It's specifically designed to go up walls, it is NOT meant to be run in the field as he's using it.

Good video sir … thanks … I’m wondering if you have a way to make this kind of roofing which would be temporary, say tor a year , and then I want to frame and build another floor on top . I tried last winter to not take off the plastic under the ice shield . And just used roofing cement with strips and sandbags .. it partly blew off this winter .. and I have some mould now where it leaked .. I may use your method .. where can I get the top membrane in canada …and what is it called?

Hi! Love your videos since I am very new to anything related to roofs (first time home owner). I have a question because I am a bit confused. You say you can install this over an existing roof but it looks like you installed a new cap sheet over a base- so would I have to rip off the old cap sheet or can you install the base over an existing cap sheet?

I wouldn't keep a propane tank on the new roof without a dead sheet. Those endlaps will let go at some point without embedding the granules. Decent result though i guess.

I have a 2700 sqft roof . Here in miami i got quoted 30 k from i wont say there name but there known. A nice salesmen showed up in shiny company truck and handed me the shiny estimate. Lol ive been painting it with silicone material for passed few years. It is a flat roof but theres no way i can do entire roof job myself. However could i reroll entire roof or would the weight be too much? Thank you .

What happens to the high spots on the roof? I ended up with those the last time I did my flat roof with regular roll roofing, and over the years, they dried, cracked, then leaked. I presume the same thing will happen with the stick down roof if it's not perfectly flat?

by high spots do you mean wrinkles or creases?.... because that shouldn't be, that's poor installation technique.. because those wrinkles are hollow and not adhered to the actual surface which means they will shrink and expand with changing temps and eventually crack
