It’s actually a fuel turn on lever. When the equipment is not in use the lever should be closed.

It's 5 miles to the nearest paved road where I live. I really appreciate this tip. This road has more washboards than a Hillbilly Laundromat.

Got it! Fuel Off: Beer On!!!!
Steve! Please do a new updated riding lawnmower maintenance video!! Or even an updated trouble-shooting video on why some people's mowers wont start at the beginning of a season, Anything from oil changes, blade sharpening, when to change air filters, fuel filter, blah blah blah, im sure im not the only one that wants an updated video on this subject, with a fresh new video of the God of small engines, possibly with some HORROR stories of past customer's situations included with your updated maintenance videos, being that it is now spring time, we all need a current up to date refresher (at least me, eastern north carolina here buddy! Love your videos and simple explanations, you are the small engine God in my book!) 😂😂
wow man another OMG moment , never thought of it , and I'm a gardener with 2 mowers , you are pure gold my friend . pure gold 👍👍👍

Right on buddy! Thank You...
Makes sense to me. I think it’s a good idea to shut it off whenever you’re not using it.
In Australia we call washboard roads ,Corrugated roads
You are so right. Many years ago, I took my 4-stroke Yamaha 500 up a long steep trail. When I got to the top, I decided to kill the engine and coast back down. I forgot to close the fuel valve. It took a while at the bottom to start the bike (kick starter only). Talk about flooded.
Good info Steve I know when I run my generators I shut the fuel off and let the engine Burn out what's left in the carburetor!
Good tip Steve. Personally, I have always shut the fuel valves off on all of my gasoline powered equipment when I’m finished using something.
that's something the majority of people would never think about for sure. actually anybody for that matter except for Steve the small engine optimization god!
Yep, 100%. I've told many customers (contractors etc) with GX Honda/Chonda style engines to do this before transporting their equipment, mostly after they got me out for a no start and I found a bucket load of fuel in the oil, luckily they were a no start situation or bad things might've happened🤣 Better still, I explain the reason why, and also recommend they get in the habit of turning it off then run the machine out of fuel before transport and storage etc. Sure, I might miss out on a few no starts, or seasonal carby cleans, but at least they don't call me out on weekends or odd hours for a problem that's simple for them to avoid altogether👍
Thank you Steve , this tip saved me a lot of time when transporting my wood chipper machine.
Nice to know and you get a video done quick instead of drawing out longer
nice tip, I always leave my machines with the fuel valve off.
I often treat the fuel shutoff valves on equipment like a shutdown switch and let the carb run out of gas, incase it sits for an extended period before use again👍🏻
Great choice of beer, Steve!
Basics are key. Bottoms up .Great channel
I grew up on washboard roads in the mtns of NC ,and everything you said makes sence.

Never even considered this.... This is why I love your channel!
Why didn't I think of that 😂!!! You are a star 🌟 Steve
PBR a classic good beer!
Fixed a few over the years where this was the exact cause of a no start, easy minor fix which can be avoided if the machine has a fuel shut off. We have to be aware that not all machines have a fuel shutoff, however good practise to make use of it while transporting or storing for long periods. Cheers.
Shut the fuel valve off……IF it has one. Some don’t. If yours doesn’t have one, they’re $10 or less at your local small engine repair shop, get one. You’ll be glad you did. This will also help in the winter - turn the valve off and run the engine until it runs out of gas. Now your main jet won’t be clogged up or the float stuck in the spring.
Great information! I've been turning fuel valve off and, letting them run until they quit. Cheers Bill 😮
Great idea to post this video on how to transport your equipment Steve 😊

Something that I hadn’t thought of..thanks bud!
Be careful, Steve. You're making sense.
Steve ....you the Man........
Thanks for the excellent explanation. I always had a problem getting my log splitter started when towing it somewhere. I started closing the fuel valve and the problem stopped. Now thanks to you, I know why.

Great suggestion, I have an older walk behind Cub Cadet with the 6.5hp Briggs that would be flooded every time I hauled it somewhere. Heck I couldn’t even roll it down the drive with engine off to prevent throwing a rock without flooding so I cut the fuel line and installed a shut off valve and a filter while In there. No more problems.
This is a fabulus tip ! Thanks Steve🍻🍺🍺
Not just power equipment. I had a old dirt bike I left the fuel on do that!! Took forever to get it started again. Even though it was running good before I left.
Hi Sir, I just bought a Wallenstein wood splitter , it is equipped with a Vanguard 6.5 HP 203cc engine. I am disapointed because the engine has no seperate fuel valve. The fuel valve is activated with the lever of the off switch at the same time. The last splitter we had, had a Honda engine ( that I loved) who had a seperate fuel valve and EVERY time I stopped it, I was closing that fuel valve with a slow throttle to let it die and never had a problem starting this engine. I feel good when there is no gas left in the carburator. My neighbour have a home hardware wood splitter who has a Briggs and this lower quality engine has a seperate fuel valve ???. Why would they do this on a Vanguard. Excuse me for the quality of my English, Michel Quebec, Keep up your excellent work Steve.
This might be the reason why I had this issue from a "stuck" float on my riding mower that I swap winter and summer equipment to my storage shed a couple of hours away. Thanks ... I'll make sure I close the valve this spring when I bring the rider back.
Thank you, Steve. I really appreciate $$ saving tips..
Good stuff Steve, I never realized that!
I alwats use the fuel shut off. I even use it every time when I finish the mowing.
Sometimes it the simple things! Happens with old Vespas. Scooter is flooded after a ride in the back of the van or pick-up. Cheers!

Right on Stella! Thank You...
There's a good dudes if your lawn mowers like mine where it does not have a shut-off valve you always drain the tank and then drain the bowl . This will save you a lot of headache instead of dealing with a flooded engine .
Haven't seen a Pabst consumed in a long long time. Great vid Steve.
Thanks for that unique tip!

Thanks Steve. This is a great tip!!!!
Dam good advice !!! Thanks Steeve !
Have known this for over forty years
Good tip. Tx once again Steve!
Very good Steve, (not so the Pabst !..., at least to my palate !!!) But enjoy my friend. Comments regarding no fuel shut off : clamp off hose with whatever You got, then run engine out of fuel ! Thanks Steve
Thanks man. Couldn’t tell you how many in-line fuel shut offs. I’ve installed over the years and yet they don’t turn the fuel off when they get off of the machine oh well.
Most of my equipment like this didn't come with a fuel valve, I've had to add one. Old riding lawnmowers and tractors are notorious for float problems from the constant bouncing over rough lawns/terrain, not much you can do except re-adjust the float when it gets knocked out of adjustment. Thanks for the tip, Steve!
That has happened to me a thousand times with my dirt bike. I always forget to turn the fuel off
On a Tecumseh engine with an inlet pipe, it will most certainly just puddle gas on the ground instead of flooding the engine due to the fact that the inlet pipe travels upward and the fuel can’t travel in that direction. This will get your air filter wet in the process but it’s still better than dealing with a flooded engine. My advice? Install a fuel valve on the line and run that sucker dry before loading it. I do the same exact thing with my carbureted ATVs.
Thanks Steve
This explains how I've been getting a oil reservoir full of gas and oil mix.
Learned that even just moving the champion log splitter around the yard, it will try to flood out the engine, but the honda on my ferris same design will start right up. Do some video on why 2 strokes have a hard time starting when it's hot outside side. Or some info why my kohler v twin won't start when it's below 39 f but the kawasaki will start right up even when it's colder than 36? It has drove crazy over the years. Love your short simple videos
Sometimes the simple things save large headaches.
makes perfect sense. I turn off the fuel when it's going to sit for a while, anyway. bad thing is my truck generator apparently splashes all the fuel out of the cap between uses. fortunately, it only holds about a quart of fuel, anyway.
Hi Steve, Thanks for the tip. I had my Husquavarna lawnmower, which came with a Honda engine, after every use I would close my fuel valve and finish cutting with the fuel I had left in the gas line. When I ran out of fuel, I would clean the underside of the mower. Last year I bought a new Toro and it doesn't have a fuel/gas valve. I was sad about that.Take care.
Great Tip 👍. . . .🍻
What a lucky day...I hit the 777 thumbs up. Have a Green beer for me on Sunday
Amazing. Excellent advice.
I agree if not in use I always turn the fuel valve off!

I have a generator in the back of my truck. I shut the fuel off for that reason too. Just saves wear and tear, and fuel.
Each and every time I finish using gas powered equipment (i.e. of any type), I turn the fuel port off while the equipment is still running to empty the carburetor. I purchased these cut-off valve kits from Wal-mart for a cost of $9.87. I have installed them on all of my four cycle engine equipment.
Excellent advice. Thank you
Excellent point in shutting the fuel line off. Thanks. I hate to bring this up Steve, this issue has come up many many times. So anyway, this is about bar oil leaking out of a chainsaw when not in use. I’d like to know your suggestion and what do you think about my idea. I have many chainsaws, there for they sit more than they get used, but they leak constantly. I’m thinking about removing the bars and replace them with fabricated metal plates and gaskets. The bar nuts will hold down enough pressure where the oil won’t leak. What do you think? And what suggestions do you have. I know I could pour the oil out of the saw but I think it’s still going to leak the oil that’s in the line.
I simply cut fuel value off and drain carb Makes sense 😊
Thanks for the tip, also never heard the term wash boarding on gravel roads before, probably because gravel roads are few and far between in the UK😊
Be sure your equipment has a shut off for the fuel. I had a tractor that leaked at the needle/seat and washed the oil from the cylinder. Didn't know this happened until it was too late. Engine cranked slowly, thought it was battery going out. Big dollar fix! I always have a shutoff and use it.
Thank you. Great information.

Still the GOAT!
Saw a Husqvarna 4 wheel drive mower at Lowes one time marked down to $50 for parts. Tag said unable to start from their fix it shop. So I pulled the string, compression feels good. The gas tank doesn't smell to bad and while Im there notice the fuel valve shut off. I turned it on and gave that Honda a good pull and it sputtered to life right there! Quickly ripped the tag off and bought it for $50. Nearly brand new.
Another great tip, thanks Steve.
WOW that's a very good tip❤

Wow great advice I wouldn't have ever thought that would be a problem thanks a lot for your knowledge Steve-o!!
Best bet is to always turn off gas when not in use. Better tip is to always have a large stock of PBR, just in case there's a shortage!
Should shut fuel valve whenever not in use.
Wow Steve, I didn't know that! Thanks for the info.
