The young woman directly in front of the camera has sewing scissors tattooed on her arm looks very concerned about something the whole video. The face she makes when the instructor says "yards and yards of ruffles" is priceless.

I am a staunch Brother sewing machine advocate except when it comes to sergers! In my opinion NO other company can match a Baby Lock serger when it comes to quality, ease of use and versatility! I own the Baby Lock Evolution and it is the very best serger I have ever owned (and I have sergers by Pfaff, Viking and Janome).

This is the BEST quick serger video I have seen, particularly for the Baby Locks! It does not show everything that a Baby Lock Evolution, Evolve, or Imagine Wave can do (or the newest one I can't recall the name of, at the moment), but it does an awesome job of showing very quickly, how some of the newest sergers, with the automatic tension & that adjust to any fabric automatically, can switch from one stitch to another, and quickly accomplish whatever you want or need to do, very quickly, with very little adjustments. That is what makes us LOVE our Ovation, Evolution , Evolve, Evolve Wave, Evolution, Imagine, Imagine Wave, Eclipse or other jet air threaded Baby Lock sergers! Thank you Linda Rainwater!

Yes, the Babylock serger in the video is the Ovation, but has many of the same special features as the sergers I mentioned in my comment. Babylock has edited the names of their various jet air threading sergers, changing the Imagine Wave into the Enlighten, & the Evolve Wave has become the Evolution, the Eclipse used to have a LX luxury version, which had the jet air threading, as well as an LED screen, which told you which tension settings to use, for each special stitch. Now they only have the DX, no LED screen, but jet air threading & SX, the bottom end version, with no jet air thread assist, just tubular loopers that you thread with a long slender wire, with a lasso at one end, so you can put your thread through the lasso, push the lasso end through the tubular loopers, then pull your thread through, quickly threading the loopers, which are usually one of the difficult parts of learning to use a serger.

very good. i used to think because one guy showed me how to use it with 4 spools 2 needles thats all it does is serge. i didnt know as i had no manual when i was given my old brother relic it can have the knife off to just finish edges.. and what you just did makes it all the more fun. its hard to know unless you see. and preferably what stitch for what fabric and how to videos are greatly needed vs payign 35 bucks for an hr lesson which i went for and the lady took out a gadget thingy underneath and i had no idea why or how ot put it back in. so videos are great to refer back to and thank you

They probably won't break; it's more about how forgiving they are to different types of material, how precise the stitch formation is, and how smooth the motor runs. Having tried a Brother ($300), Juki ($800), and Babylock ($1600) machine, they all get the job done. Brother's motor speed is hard to control, and thread guides are somewhat rough. Juki / Bernina has much better motor control and everything is moving smoothly, but threading is time consuming and you have to fiddle with 7 knobs to find the perfect setting for a given fabric. The Babylock (Enlighten) addresses those problems, bringing it down to 3 knobs. In addition it has a brighter lamp and a tighter turning radius. There are clearly differences in quality, but they are somewhat subtle and not proportional to the price tags.

I just bought a second hand Bernina bernette 335 for € 35,- ; all metal, took another € 70,- to get it working, but looks like new now and hardly makes any noise. For $ 5000,- you could get a used Serger and a fairly young Mercedes to show off your creations...

  • @babylocksewing

Hi Khadija, we recommend checking to make sure the needles are properly inserted. You may also want to make sure the thread is well seated in the thread slots. Also, make sure there is at least 18 inches of loose thread beyond the thread guide above the threading port and that there are no kinks or twists in the thread as it goes into the threading port.

Some BabyLock sergers are, especially if they aren't properly serviced. Considering that sergers are cutting fabric, and sewing with 2 to 5 needles and 2 or 3 loopers (depending on the machine), they are not too noisy for what they do. However, you can purchase an industrial serger, with a servo motor, for a much quieter, STRONG FAST serger.

The Singer machines have a great deal more trouble, and are harder to use, for most people, than the BabyLock sergers, but I can't speak for the new cheap line of BabyLock sergers, since Brother became part of the same big conglomerate with BabyLock. I bought all of mine second hand, usually sold each to buy the next, except I do currently have the 838D with the knee lift, and the BabyLock Evolve, in addition to my industrial serger, and several secondhand Singer sergers, and a couple of other brands, which I bought specifically (secondhand) to free up and use for teaching people to use their sergers. If you buy machines with problems, and fix them, you can get them cheaper. Many times, previous owners just didn't know how to take care of them.
