Never got taught this in class so thank you for explaining this so perfectly! Also, can the last example work for any fuel cells containing an alcohol, or is it just methanol? I have seen a question with an ethanol fuel cell on a paper. And Just for clarification, is a fuel cell a cell containing an alcohol?

so in alkaline fuel cells will OH- move to the anode ? that should be correct because its an anion

For the methanol fuel cell how did you identify which is more electropositive when making the overall equation?

Well obvious way would be to use the electrode potentials, but I think in this case it's because well oxygen is an oxidising agent so it gets reduced coz it has empty p-orbitals that need filling up. Reduction always happens at the cathode.

can you explain why can't we use Hydrogen Fuel Cells on Airplanes/ Drones since they have much higher energy density than regular batteries?

CreaShunTV Hi there, common question this. At GSSE you study electrolysis where the electricity is supplied to the cell. In these the anode is positive and the cathode is negative. These cells work the opposite way as they create and electrical current. The anode is now negative and the cathode is positive. Interestingly, reduction always takes place at the cathode (redcat). Do a search on electrolytic cells (GCSE) and electrochemical cells (A level) if you’d prefer to check. Some teachers have messaged me to say they’ve been teaching it wrong to their A level students. Hope this helps.

So sir are there 2 types of fuel cells. Hydrogen Oxygen and Oxygen Methanol? these are the ones we need to know for OCR chem? also there can be 2 conditions acidic or alkali?

There are many types. They could give you any one of them. Just make sure you know what to do from the two half equations

How much of fuel cells are we meant to know? Has the spec changed?

From the spec Explanation that a fuel cell uses the energy from the reaction of a fuel with oxygen to create a voltage and the changes that take place at each electrode. Recall of fuel cells and equations will not be required. Relevant electrode potentials and other data will be supplied.
