This is my first reading, and I just started The Bonehunters. This series is so incredible. His writing style is so on point and clear.

" I love it, but I can't recommend it to everyone. It is hard." Eriksen is all about that tough love, man. Figuratively and literally.

Finishing deadhouse gates today. I really struggled with gardens of the moon but decided to push through. Great review! Very realistic approach.

@@toastytowns Icarium and Mappo have my heart, I love their friendship so much! Also, what do you think about Felisin? Some people love her while some hate her..

@@Anomanderrake_ I would definitely say that I’m not a Felisin hater. She’s certainly not the most likable character and causes some issues, but I think people forget that she’s just a kid! She’s been through a lot, and I think it makes her more interesting that she’s not the easiest person to root for.

You'll be more clear on things when you read it again. It's the best series ever written. Every next reading is better.

Man, I really wanna get back into it. I actually loved the fact that I got two books in and the series still hadn't revealed what it was about. Then Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews spoils what it's about in the first two minutes of his "spoiler free" breakdown video, and it's seriously killed all of my excitement for it. I don't think he realises what a huge spoiler that was. It's like if someone explained a Sherlock Holmes novel and said "In this book, Sherlock is trying to catch a killer by the name of Harold."

Great video! I could feel your passion shining through as you spoke. I read Malazan as it was published starting in 1999 and just this year decided to reread it. There was SO MUCH I didn't pick up on the first time - and keep in mind - this was 20 years ago now - but even still, I loved my initial read of the series and remember the long wait I had for book 10 to finally get published. Malazan Book of the Fallent has always held a very high position in my favorite series list. Rereading it is a delight! Even though I have forgotten many of the minor scenes and plot points, I find myself remebering characters quickly as I go. So happy to see you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Thanks for your comment Clay! I can’t imagine reading these books as they came out without all the wikis and guides that exist today. I would have been even more lost without them!

I read the first two books and loved them. I actually love the feeling of not knowing what was going on and guessing what it's all building up to, it makes it super atmospheric imo and mysterious. Then I stopped awhile because I was burned out. By the time I was ready to jump back in, a youtuber I liked uploaded a "spoiler free" 50 minute Malazan breakdown that I thought I'd watch the first two minutes of to make sure I didn't hear too much. But it was in those first two minutes that he reveals the end goal of the entire series, and it's killed a lot of excitement for me. I still wanna read through it, because if I know Malazan, then I know it's absolutely not gonna go down how I expect, but still. It revealed a lot for a spoiler free video lol.

Wow that’s definitely unfortunate, but I’ll say that while it was part of the fun guessing where the series was going, the characters were always my favorite part!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! rereading the series is absolutely worthwhile.. if/when you get around to it, you should do spoiler videos for each book, there's so much to discuss :)

I would add a slight addition to the "not for everyone" thing. If you're not confised in the first 400 pages. Don't bother. I'm on memories of ice, and i can conclusively say it's not worth it. If you're not confused, the writing style just does not work.

Maybe I'm a genius (jk) but I honestly never found Malazan that confusing. I feel like people really overstate how confusing it is. Is it a simple read? No. But I think of Malazan more like a mystery book. In a good mystery, you don't know whodunnit but you're not completely in the dark, and an observant reader can piece together clues to figure it out. Malazan is kind of like that. Like I guess I don't see it as confusing, which sounds negative, I see Malazan more as a mysterious puzzle. Honestly my fav part of my first read of the series was trying to piece together dialogue, character actions, politics, worldbuilding and readings of the Deck to guess how things were going to play out. I never found the books to be so confusing that they were a chore to read. I loved every page of every book (except Toll the Hounds lmao-fuck Clip) and trusted that the slow drip of information would come together in the end. That being said, I read the books at 18, and in the 8yrs since then, I've read the series 10 times, so maybe that's why I think it's overstated.
