Perhaps you haven’t found the right BookTube channels yet? From your discussion here it sounds like most of the BookTube channels you watch might be classified as BookTube Influencer channels or channels that are run by people who want to be BookTube Influencers. There are thousands of channels run by people who just want to talk about books and read and make videos about the books they want regardless of how trendy they are. Glad this video led me to your channel.

As someone who intentionally watches very little KZread these days, you are my favorite book cockroach.

I've seen a lot of videos like this recently, saying BookTube is changing and isn't good anymore, but I feel like that's the algorithm's fault, not BookTube's. There are loads of BookTubers around who don't just read popular books. I follow lots of BookTubers who read classics, translated fiction, or niche genres, but the algorithm still recommends me the romance-and-fantasy crowd, because that's what the majority likes. When you're a minority, you have to seek out what you like for yourself. Maybe search the title/author of a book you really love, find someone talking about it, and then look at their comments. Some of the people commenting will also be BookTubers with similar channels. Once you start down a rabbit hole of your own design, KZread will start to catch on and recommend you a few similar channels (though it never stops trying to suck you into the popular crowd!). Incidentally, that's how I found your channel! So please don't judge the whole community based on the algorithm. There are some really cool BookTubers who march to their own drum and offer great recommendations.

I’ve been doing this for so long now I just do what I want. I don’t care what the trends are. Maybe if I was doing this to make a living I’d care more. I’m just here to talk about booka

I make an active effort to click "not interested" on videos like what you're describing. A major pet peeve of mine is clockbait videos that claim the impossible such as: "How I read 150 books this week!! (Impossible???)" or "How To Instantly Write A Book (insert a picture of a famous author smirking knowingly into the camera) It drives me insane, haha. There IS NO SECRET TO THESE THINGS. The secret to reading more books is to take the amount of books that you read right now and then increase it. The secret to writing a book is to have an idea and then sit down and take your hands and physically move them around on the keyboard until you have your idea typed. Might as well make a video titled "How To Eat More Carrots" or something.

@@toastytowns Totally agree. I just don’t find his channel as useful of a source for book recommendations compared to it three years ago. That being said his Sun Eater content is unambiguously amazing!

Hey Owen, speaking of recommendations, Ken Liu translated this book called Vagabonds! Im almost done with it and its sooo good. Basically theres this Earth guy making a humanizing pro-mars propaganda film about a Martian girl who became enchanted with earth on her exchange there and has returned to Mars dissatisfied with life there. Earth guy is really into mars, and martian girl is really into earth and she fears that the earthlings were right that her grandfather really is a dictator. Its really fascinating and contemplative and thoughtful. So Earth (population 20billion) and Mars(20 million) were at war for decades, but now thats over. Part of the truce is sending students to go live on the other planet for a few years. The book starts on a ship with all the Martian students returning home, and earth delegates are on the ship to begin negotiations. The book is following a Martian 18yo who just got back from 5yrs on earth. Theres also a filmmaker from an earth delegation who's making a movie on mars. Earth is capitalist and Mars is kinda commie and their systemic issues are very different. Plus this is a Chinese book, so I think it gives some insight into what China is like, since Mars seems to represent it. Hope you try it and enjoy. I frequently HATE translated Asian books because they feel so stilted and awkward like they were translated by someone who writes instruction manuals or textbooks and not novels. But Ken Liu is a great author as you and I both know, so his translation is really really great.

You're not like others girls, bro. I noticed that the booktubers who read a ridiculous amount of books and don't gloat on that fact are telling the truth, and the ones who want attention and show the hundred books that they read that same day, and I know this is surprising and nobody saw it coming, are lying. There's this argentinian booktuber who I like who showed "The Way of Kings" and said she re-read it in one day, and she said it as if it wasn't a big deal because it isn't a big deal for her, she's been doing that her whole life. D'you know what I'm saying?

you really mean I’m not like other girls? 🥹👉🏼👈🏼 I personally have never lied in my life ever, so it surprises me that people would do so for money/attention. Way of Kings in a day is insane tho, I guess if you literally do nothing else than read it can be done??

Please don't change your style. I have been unsubscribing so many popular book-tubers!!! The amount of fantasy books that are being promoted and produced ( not sure whether to call that publishing anymore) is nauseating at this point. I would rather take book recommendations from someone like you ( who also considers other genres for a change sometimes) and read each one of those books thrice instead of going to such other channels for book recommendations and listening to their annoying product placements and blatant political agenda.
