Quick & Easy Painting of MDF Wargaming Terrain - Table Ready
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this wargaming terrain tutorial I cover how I quickly painted up my MDF terrain from Warcradle Scenics to get it ready for the table as quick as possible. I found that having a decent base coat can take you a very long way in the painting process for very little effort, then carefully choosing a couple of additional colors for the details is all it takes to bring these pieces to life.
I hope you enjoy the video and remember to like and subscribe.

Thanks so much for the example you gave me here. I wasn't sure I should paint MDF, but now I'm inspired. I LOVE these bunkers, man. I'm a fanatical Iron Warriors collector and painter, and these are my dream fortification. I'm seeing banners and barbed wire and all kinds of stuff you can do with this. MDF is really great.
He's back! Huzzah! Glad to see that you're doing better amigo.

Thanks for watching John. You can get a fair way along with a decent base coat. :)
Man, These look great! The airbrush gradient adds so much to the look of that, so awesome.

Thanks. Yeah that airbrush makes short work of the base coats. Thanks for the comment mate.
Fine work as always! Good to see you back again. Cheers!

Thank you very much mate.
That looks awesome! The thumbnail looks like something out of a graphic novel, in the best way. Now I'm almost sad I'm going all rusty and grimy for my Necromunda terrain... Almost. 😉

Thanks man. I think you're making the right decision with the Necormunda stuff btw. :) This is cool for a table ready solution, but it honestly still feels unfinished to me for some reason haha.
Superb work. I’m assuming you first put a layer of PVA on the bare MDF? I always prefer thick coats of brushed paint on all terrain pieces, both to fully seal/protect them and to remove the ‘flatness’ that is inevitable with MDF. But the sprayed gradients on the final layer are great.

I was lucky with these pieces from Warcradle, as they're already primed with paint out of the packet, but with raw MDF, I would go with a layer of PVA before applying the paint yes. The lack of texture was my first worry with MDF terrain too, but for these sci-fi pieces it doesn't seem to matter too much at all. Thank you for watching and commenting mate.
I've never used any MDF terrain yet, but I've been thinking about buying some for Reality's Edge cyberpunk game. So this is a good video for me to see how to go about painting some if I get any in the future.

I was really impressed with the MDF after this build. I initially thought it would stand out on the table and be too obvious as MDF terrain, but there's enough details here to make these work really well. Good luck with your project mate, and thank you for the comment.
Dulling down the metallics with washes might be a good idea. GW's Nuln oil (Black wash fo the silver metallics) and Agrax Earthshade (Brown wash for the warmed gold metallics) or equivalents fro other companies would probably work best

Thank you for the suggestion. There's quite a bit more I could be doing with these to really 'finish' them, but for now they're going to be shelved as table ready. They still feel unfinished to me, so I'll be lucky to let these sit for too long before doing more to them. Cheers again.
Hey mate, do warcradle send out kits direct ?? or how'd you go about getting them in Aus cheers

Hey Ryan, I don't think they do send them out direct. I think mightyape stocks the brand in Aus, but you might have to reach out to them to request a particular set as I've noticed they don't have a lot. Sorry I can't be more helpful here. Let me know if I can help in any other way though. Cheers.
Nice one! was wondering what Warcradle kits looked like painted, up

Thanks mate. I've had a lot of fun getting this project completed, I'll admit, some parts of the painting felt tedious as it gets a bit repetitive, but overall these are a really rewarding project. I hope I get to do some more sometime.
I purchased some nice MDF terrain for Boarding Action + Kill Team games, interested in doing a basic paint for all of them. Will the MDF work well with rattle can for the base? I don't have room for an airbrush setup otherwise that's what I would go with.

Hey Steven, rattle can will work fine for the mdf, I prefer Matt colors, but this isn't always possible, so do what you can here, remember Gloss and Matt will have noticably different finishes. Try not to get too close with the can when you're spraying, and try not to put on lots of paint. Just put on a very light coat, let it dry a bit, and repeat this process (maybe 3-5 times I guess) until it has a uniform color. I like to coat both sides, although the back is only given 2 coats as it doesn't need to be perfect if it's not seen, but the coat on the back will help to keep your MDF flat. Good luck mate. Thanks for watching.
