Quick Deploy, No Tie, Tarp Ridge-line

When it starts to rain, you want to get under cover quickly, and if your cover is your tarp, you really want to be able to get it up as quickly as possible. In this video, we're out and about in the woods testing a quick deploy, no tie ridge-line. The line is up in less than 90 seconds and the tarp hanging about 15 seconds later. Without me yapping on, I reckon the shelter is up in less than 2 minutes. (Maybe I'll revisit this and time it - let me know if you'd like to see that!)
I've seen a few videos showing various fast systems, most notably on Corporals Corner which is where I first saw the concept and decided to have a go myself. In reality, as with all of these there is a catch. While this one is "no tie" you do need to prepare your line before you go out. Prep' in this case is to create a loop at one end, using your favourite knot and add four loops using prussic friction knots..
Now originally, this was just going to be called "quick deploy", but "inanowt" turned up with a nifty bot of kit called the CamJam which we decided to incorporate, and that allowed us to add "no tie". If you wanted to do away with the marlin you could add another prussic, and CamJam, effectively giving you a truckers hitch at both ends.

I keep 7 tent stakes with my tarps, this way I am NOT looking for toggles, I already have them. Plus I have 5 loops on each ridge line so I can pull the tarp extra tight, one loop is used for hanging a light.

I love experimenting with fast deploy lines, and found the sticks to secure the tarp are not required, the knot of the prusik will keep it in place nicely under its own tension.

Put a free running toggle on ridgeline and use that to put through loop....saves having to find a stick and it'll never drop out. Keep tarp on ridgeline all the time...so deploy tarp as you deploy ridgeline. Toggle at the other end allows you to easily use a self-locking truckers hitch.

I use the same type of set up. The only thing that I've done differently is how I made my prusik loops? I used to make my loops by tieing the two ends in a knot like yours. But the knots could be annoying sometimes. So I came up with another idea that got rid of the problem, and its never once let me down. Instead of forming the loops with a knot, I slid a piece of shrink wrap tubing onto the paracord first, then welded the two ends of cord together with a lighter. Then I slid the heat shrink tubing over the join so it was central over the weld. Then I got my lighter out again and the heat shrink constricts tightly over the join. It's just as quick and easy to make the loops using my method, as it is to tie and trim the knots in the usual way. It doesn't sound like it would make much difference by using my heat shrink trick, but it certainly does. If you try it, you'll soon see what I mean. 👍

@@owtnabowt2723 By pure coincidence, my son asked me if I could set up my 3x3 dd tarp in the garden today as a bit of sun protection for my 2 yr old granddaughter. No problem at all I said. I strung my ridgeline out between the washing line pole and a ladder that I leant against my shed at a low angle. (Approx 5m distance apart). I used a truckers hitch to tention the ridgeline, but I didn't go too heavy on it cos I had visions of the ladder toppling over🙈😆! Within 5 mins at the very most, my granddaughter had a nice neat 3x3m sunshade to play under. My son was amazed at how quickly I got it all set up for him. So I showed him how I did it. He especially liked the idea of the prusik loops with a couple of clothes pegs that i used as toggles. Then i demonstrated to him how prusik knots work. I'm a big fan of all the different types of knots and their different/specific uses. It all started as a child when my grandfather taught me how to tie a truckers hitch. I was fascinated by how such a simple knot could generate so much power and leverage. Then he told me a very true old saying that I'll never forget.... "It's better to know a knot and not need it, than it is to need a knot but not know it" The truckers hitch will always be my favourite knot for sentimental reasons as well as practical reasons. But following very closely behind in 2nd place is without doubt the superb and simple prusik knot. Great channel mate. 🤝👍

I think if you cut yourself two metres of rope you can practice the Siberian Hitch and the Trucker’s Hitch whilst you’re watching TV. With a bit of practice you can tie these knots in less time. You could also try pre threading your ridgeline onto your tarp. It’s what I’ve done. It’s almost as quick as bungees.

(not that I'm generally in a hu😀rry). I reality, if I really wanted a super fast deploy, I'd have all the lines pre-attached, but if you watch some of my other vids, the thing that draws me to the basha is how versatile it is. And I like that it can be set up in lots of different ways. You are right though, about using other methods than the camjam,. I do like it, but I've reverted to a truckers hitch on a farmers loop. Its quite satisfying pulling the line tight in that fasion, and its always better to have multiple ways of doing things. As we say 2 is 1, and 1 is none. Thanks for watching and commenting.
