Excellent video, very informative and well produced. For the tarp tent I've seen a carabineer used on one of the folded corner bits to allow easier entry and exits. Unclipping the carabineer makes the tarp tent a bit more practical, but wriggling in is a tried and true method.

keep on trying man once you figure out how to keep the tension as you go it becomes a lot easier.

I love this video! I was unfamiliar with #4 and I really appreciate you doing a great job of showing the step by step instructions. I'll definitely give the ones I'm less familiar with a try. The only thing I do differently on the A frame, is that I add an extra line on each pole to stabilize them a bit more. Maybe I just need some more practice. Really great video!

appreciate the kind words man. the tarp tent is a tricky one for sure. mine is still a little flappy lol it's a fine science on that pitch. I used to do the extra lines on the a frame as well it takes some re adjustments as you pull it all tight with the single line but once it's dialed in its solid. glad you enjoyed the video man.

Nice one. My two favourites are the tent style and the plough point.

The sections where you show the good and the bad need to be shown a little longer for folks to read. The widescreen, high viewpoint angle for the video was really well thought out. It gives the viewer the ability to see all you are doing and how you are doing it. Little details of why you do something helped too. I like your use of bright orange paracord. A lot more visible and less likely to be tripped over. :)

the simplicity of it and the space it offers is great even if weather direction changes so simple to pull a few stakes and pivot

My preference depends on the conditions. I live in a humid subtropical climate with lots of biting insects and some venomous snakes so I generally prefer a tent. When I was in the US Army we used ponchos as tarps because we had to be able to see out and couldn’t afford to be trapped in a tent. In hot weather a tent can be too hot, so sometimes I’ll set up a mesh tent under a tarp so there’s more ventilation. In winter, arthropods and snakes aren’t a concern so I’ll use a tarp. If it’s not going to rain, I might just cowboy camp in winter. Generally overall I’m more comfortable and happier in a tent.

pitches are definitely condition dependent I couldn't agree more. here in BC mosquitos are really all I have to take onto consideration but they don't tend to feast on me luckily lol. for the reasons. you mentioned about the poncho is exactly why I enjoy tarp camping I like being able to see my surroundings.

My favorite tarp pitch is an old one that is hardly ever covered, i.e. the "Forester" tarp shelter. It's like a cross between the Plow Point and the Tarp tent shown, but is easier to pitch. It starts out like a Plow Point, but the support pole is placed a few feet back from the point (like the tarp tent) about half way between the point and the center of the tarp. If your tarp has a secondary square of ties between center and edge, it will be the Middle point tie along the diagonal. Tie the two edge ties/grommets down from the top point together, and stake out in front. Fold the resulting loose flap to either side and tie to the next/third tie/grommet down. The result is similar to the Tarp Tent shown, but with a triangular doorway and a slightly bigger footprint. It's basically a Plow Point with a low door for more privacy and better weather protection. It takes only little more time and effort to make than a simple plow point.. A square tarp 10 ft/3 meter square makes a shelter that easily fits two people with gear. Head space it entirely dependant on the height of your center point.

Instead of changing the direction of the plow point when the wind changes I'm thinking of adding a couple smaller tarps (5' x 7' maybe) on either side of the tree to which the plow point is tied.

I’ve done a lot of plowing in a plow point shelter.

Genuine parachute cord has very little stretch. A synonym is static line because it’s static. Imagine jumping out of an airplane relying on something stretchy to pull your rip cord. If you had stretch paracord it was probably a cheap knock off. Get 7 strand 550 cord also known as Type III nylon.

its not the stretch in the cordage that prompted this video. alot of my alpine hikes have very little trees to tie off to which forced my hamd into being creative.

I have a 10 by 12. Perfect size for tarp tents with a ground covering.

@JTD Outdoors Nope, my tarp has lots of tie down points and if necessary, I fold it in a square with the folded part as a floor. That's a 10x10 with a 2 feet floor part which I use for my sleeping pad.

I like your tarp layouts. Good info. Thanks. Now the but. The plow configuration, this one is not good for me. Most trees as they grow the dirt at the base rises up. The rain runs down the tree and into the shelter. This is the only one that I have a problem with.

if you attach a lenght of paracord about 2 feet from the peak to the tree and tie an additional piece of paracord hanging down from the one the water will drip off that and not into the shelter. I didn't know the trick when I made this video initially

it is reflective I got it from Amazon a few years ago I honestly don't remember the name and its no longer available. 16 tie outs 3m x 3m and reflective coating and seam sealed it's a super awesome tarp

Very good for second one but why not make it easier for yourself and just get the back corners and pull over top to peg out using poles. That way you don’t need to faff on tucking it under once you have pegged out corners. So much quicker.

to be honest I haven't used a rectangular tarp. it would work for a few pitches like a frame and plough point but I could see it being limiting for some of the more intricate pitches like the tarp tent or Adirondack shelter. hope this helps. I might pick up a rectangular tarp now I'm intrigued.

I would not use my gear as those trecking poles when out in the wood when you have tree branches everywhere to use as a resource, but that's me.

trekking poles were used out of convenience and demonstrating the pitches. I don't pack them often unless I'm on backcountry trails and I known need them lol.

first tents don't have waterproof anything they are water resistant. Second a tarp is lighter and much more versatile then any tent on the market. If your worried about snakes and bugs stick to your tent if your interested in leanring new skills and being able to pitch. a survival shelter in any situation look into getting a tarp

if your using a 9.5 X 9.5 meter tarp you got short changed. Maybe your just trying to sound cool by using meters.. Stick to inches and feet it'll make you sound like the wanna be pro
