I’ll just do what I always do and use an orbital pipe torch to set my bevel perfect every time. Sure it’s cheating but it beats the hell out of having to grind every time.

That just gives you thickness of the soap stone. So wouldn’t this only work if that was what you needed, or am I missing something?

That’s a pretty cool trick man like it I haven’t done much pipefitting in the last couple years but I’ve been known to throw some black iron around myself to steam boilers hydronic boiler’s, million and some BTUs over the years. Oh yeah.

Or grab a grinder and get busy. What a waste of time. Not that hard to bevel by eye.

@@peterthethird7132 few seconds. It's like 3-4 minutes you could have already done a pass around in the time to fuck around re sharpening your soap, (waste) finding your pen again, colouring it in. When all you have to do is shape down to the inside then maintain the same space by eye around. Its just useless info for views. Find any real welder that has to work under pressure and ask them if this is a good idea and worth the time...

@@righe8701 it's good to do layout in your first few times but then when u get good at that u can eyeball all u want. U gon bevel it shitty your first few times that's why it's good to "waste" 2-3 minutes marking so u get good product instead of "eyeballing" to go faster and end up fucking up trying to rush n then waste time trynna fix that.

@@peterthethird7132 have you ever grinded a bevel? If your learning to do it from KZread for diy purposes, maybe I'll agree trying this. But this only works with that profile of steel it's not universal for bevelling. It's better to learn the correct way off the bat. This is still a waste of time, has nothing to do with being faster doing it by eye.

The square cut piece rests against the square cut edge of the pipe. For the beveled piece, the side with the smaller face is held against the square piece, so that the "point" or "tip" of the bevel stands off a few millimeters. You could essentially do the same thing with a compass. Just set the size you want, the run the needle tip alone the edge of the pipe, with the soapstone "lead" drawing a line on the face of the pipe all the way around.

Do it for 30 years , could grind that to perfection in 3 minutes, mate gapping what’s the maximum in the USA, we’re only aloud, 10 % of the thickness, ie 20 mm 2 mm , sorry about the metric, 😊
