00:20 Welcome
01:30 Approach (how I approach and how I shoot with the original X100)
04:26 Accessible settings (these are the settings that I need to access and change while shooting)
08:19 Pre-Shoot Settings (settings I set up before I go out and shoot)
Hey everyone! I hope you're all doing well! This week's episode comes in the form of a Questions Episode. A lot of people have asked me how I shoot with my original x100 and what my settings are so I decided to make this video. This one was quite challenging for me to make because there's really not a whole lot to talk about. I literally focus and recompose and shoot. That's it. I don't really mess with any of the settings. This camera has been so good for my photography growth. It's by far given me the closest feeling to shooting film that I've ever had shooting with any digital camera. It's so simple that it makes the process so minimal. This in turn has forced me to trust in myself: to trust that i can focus and recompose and not have to look at the back of the screen or that I have to check to see if I nailed the shots. At first this was really frustrating but after a few weeks of consistent shooting with it what was at first a challenge had become something I really enjoy. It's not a camera for everyone but it's a phenomenal camera for me.
I wish you all a great weekend (or week) and I hope to see you in next week's episode.
Marco Antonio

    Appreciate this video. I have my late dad’s black paint OG X100, evidently a special edition. He was a Fuji guy all his life, from the film days onward - he would tease me for shooting Sony, said it made people look like corpses 😆. On his desk when he passed was his trusty X100. According to his iPhoto library, he took 28,000 pics with it… I’m happy to continue using it. I shoot it exclusively in monochrome JPG with a Cinebloom 20% filter. It’s predates Fuji’s “recipes” by years, but it’s a connection to my dad - of sorts. Like he was in life, this camera isn’t the fastest or most cooperative - it can be downright stubborn, but it’s got a unique charm and a lot of pizazz that newer models, do not have.

    Mike this is such a beautiful comment. That you have an actual totem that he left behind is really moving. Something that was literally an extension of him and you get to make photographs with it. Also, the comparison of the cameras “characteristics” and your dad’s personality made me smile. People ask me on a regular basis what camera they should get. They mention that they want to improve and so they’re looking for a tool to do it with, but I think your dad got it right when decided to use what he had and make 28,000 photographs! That’s amazing. Also, shooting in monochrome with a cinebloom filter sounds like something I’d like to try for a while! Maybe I’ll make a video about that at some point. On a different note… Mine stoped working a few months ago but I finally found a local place that will fix it, so after Christmas I’m gonna pay more to get it repaired than what I paid to buy it in the first place. And you know what? It’s totally worth it! I wish you many more beautiful memories with this camera and with your loved ones that remain. Thank you for sharing. Happy holidays and if I can ever do anything to contribute to your process let me know. One more thing (I probably should have waited to come up with a more thought response). The “downright stubborn” part made me smile cause I think that maybe, and possibility one of the reasons that I love that camera is due to the “stubbornness” of the camera as well as mine. Like two old grumpy men who bicker but are inseparable. Ok, have a great night or day and I wish you the best.

    Thank you so much for this! I love seeing your work from the original x100 (since I own one too) on your channel as well, it helps cure my gear acquisition syndrome and remind me when I'm pricing out x100s/t/fs on the used market that I'm still a newer hobbyist and I'm not creating anything nearly as beautiful as your shots with the x100, and a newer camera won't refine my craft and eye. Seriously, your work is so inspiring, thank you for all the work you put into this channel!

    Hi Merry! That’s a really beautiful comment! I really appreciate that. As far as the x100 I was actually thinking about that a few days ago. I’ve had the original for quite some time and then last Christmas my sister gifted me the x100f and I do love it but even now, after using the x100f there is something special about the original. I don’t know what it is. A few days ago I was doing a shoot at my house and I had access to all of the cameras that I own and I ended up doing the far majority of the shoot with the original x100. It made me think of all of the times I bought gear only to realize that what I already had was already great. That’s happened so many times. That being said, I don’t want to insinuate that it’s a bad thing to buy gear and to try different cameras out, but the original really I’d so nice to use for me and its a special camera. As far as what you said about my work, thank you so much!! and in regards to the work I put into the channel I really appreciate that as it’s been quite challenging for me lately due to life changes and so the encouragement is so greatly appreciated. I hope you’re doing well and I strongly suspect that if you shoot half as well as you express yourself, then I’m certain your photos are already beautiful. 🙏🏼

    Nice to see you, Marco. I completely agree with your assessment. My x100v is set at M with the front button set to function like back button focus, if necessary. I am usually at 1/250/f4. Of course, these settings are arbitrary but generally do not make many changes. The ND filter is really an important feature. Glad you brought it up. ISO is auto, screen is off and I never chimp. The results are magical. And, it was only because I learned to “trust” the camera. Enjoyed the video. It was a nice reminder and review. Regards……Wayne

    Hey Wayne, yeah, I think shooting when we trust our gear to do what it does and where we trust ourselves to use our gear is for me a liberating experience. As far as the x100v, that seems like an amazing camera. Thanks for sharing your approach. The ND filter on these cameras is a life saver when shooting wide open. I just realized I didn’t talk about iso in this video, I’ll probably have to do a follow up video at some point but I also leave mine in auto iso, with a few exceptions, but like you said, the settings are arbitrary. Anyways, thanks for watching and for the continued support. Have a great weekend and happy shooting!

    Fellow X100 here, it's almost 10 years already and you can tell by the looks that the camera has plowed through a.lot and it still holds it's ground. It's a great gem and always a joy to have in the pocket. I think you forgot to mention about the Auto ISO setting that you use, but I guess it must have become second nature to you. For me the fn button is assigned to ISO, wich is imho worth tweaking even in the auto mode. Another button that I use in addition to the focus and reframe strategy is AE-L, wich sits right under my right thumb and allows for locking exposure, than focusing and reframing. Left thumb often tweaks the metering mode or recalls the focus point settings, especially the size. All that is easily done in ovf mode, and i agree that it's a great experience.

  • @sarifoto

    @sarifoto

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey! Yeah, you’re totally right. I do put it in auto iso. Except for when I’m shooting indoors with the built in flash, in those situations I’ll just set the iso manually. As far as the AE-L button, I’ve been using it for focusing and recomposing as well as for setting my focal distance when zone focusing. It works well or at least it did up until recently when the camera stopped working. It’s been a huge bummer cause it’s one of my favorite all time cameras. I did find a place that may be able to replace the motherboard but it’ll be a month or two before I can get it repaired. On a different note, I’m glad you’re enjoying yours and getting your message makes me want to take mine in sooner :). Have a great weekend and happy shooting!

    Thanks for another video Marco. I found your thoughts on "trusting the camera" really interesting. There is a lot of advice out there about being in control of the artistic (photographic) process and not letting the camera make the decisions. This is, of course, very useful valid advice. However, in my opinion, there are situations, styles, and ways of working which are suited to this - but it isn't necessary for everything, and it doesn't mean we are a less accomplished photographers if we don't. Your idea made me think in another way - rather than control every part of the process, we can set some boundaries for the camera within which it can "make" some decisions. This can be really liberating - as you said in your video. This could be because of the camera's limitations (as in your x100) where your choice of control is limited; or it could be because, for the type of photography we are doing, some of the controls just don't matter. One of my own examples relates to ISO. My experience shooting digital started when cameras were around 2-4mp - and the constant mantra was keep the ISO low so you keep the noise low, and I accepted and followed this (blindly). But then a photographer on KZread made the statement that the noise handling of modern cameras was so good (and post processing tools too) that they just set an upper limit and let the camera decide the ISO. Of course, I knew this, but I didn't really KNOW it. Now I mostly let the camera decide (within limits) the ISO, and I enjoy the experience of taking photographs a lot more. Of course, if I was shooting, say, macro, or printing large images, I would change tactics. But, like in many areas of life, with trust there is also responsibility - and by this I mean knowing the camera: how it functions, it's limitations and what it is good at, so we can make an educated decision about what we need to control and what we don't. Thanks again for another way of looking at things.

    Hey Laurence, thanks so much for your comment. It actually made me think and reflect on my process as well. My first digital camera was a Nikon d40 (it was actually my sisters camera but she lent it to me indefinitely:) that camera had 6 megapixels. And I remember thinking it was the most amazing thing ever after learning to shoot on film. I also kept my iso as low as possible for many years. Even when I started shooting with a Sony a6000 I would always shoot in manual and I’d keep my iso really low. And I’m not sure why but with the Sony a6000 it feels faster for me to shoot in manual and I think that on that camera changing the iso was so easy for me the way I had that camera set up, so if I found myself in a lowlight situation I would quickly change the iso to 6400 for example but when I got the x100 that approach, though it’s possible, i found that it detracted from the joy of shooting. Then, I took out an aperture priority film camera that I love using out for a photowalk and I was reminded how liberating it feels to shoot with that camera (Pentax ME). Though it doesn’t have auto iso, the latitude in color negative film is so much so that I could just set my exposure compensation to plus one or two and no matter what I shot id get a useable image. Taking that same approach and adapting it to the x100 just worked. Sorry for the long stories but I guess what I’m saying is that I agree one hundred percent with your statements and you said it in a way that I probably couldn’t have said it. Setting certain boundaries for the camera is a great way of putting that. Anyways, thank you for your comment and thank you for sharing. I feel like everything you said, describes my journey in photography to the letter. I hope you’re well and I wish you an amazing week!

    @@sarifoto Marco, thanks for the long reply - it's good to read them. Sorry for my late response - busy days. Yes, some cameras are better and faster used manually - sometimes all that high tech gets in the way :). I recently (well it's been 2 years now I guess) film photography again. Only a little here and there as it is expensive. It amazed me (and still does) that I could take a general reading with my light meter and set the camera controls and just leave it like that - maybe leaning a little towards over exposure - and I could be sure of almost always getting good results. All I had to do was change the values up and down so the exposure was the same. Another thing I wanted to thank you for is your use of the OVF on the x100 series. I never considered using it, but after seeing your video I decided to try it. I still prefer the EVF, but the OVF certainly changes your perspective and how I approach taking a photo.

As far as the OVF, yeah, I love using it. I’m not really sure why, I just do. The EVF is just as good and just as valid. I guess I just like the game of it. Yeah, these are great little cameras if you don’t mind slowing down a bit. Recently or in the last year or so I’ve done a lot more zone focusing than in previous years and this makes the camera much faster for travel in the moment type of stuff. For everything else where I’m just hanging out with friends or on photowalks I just shoot at f2. As far as the JPGs on this camera, I absolutely love the Provia and astia files with a little contrast added to them afterwards. Enjoy your break and I hope you have fun with this little beast of a camera.

    @@sarifoto you right, something about using a view finder makes everything feel more natural, even with my canon sd1000 I use the viewfinder and it zooms in and out(some short of black magic). For the x100s I normally use the ovf not the evf, the evf is very slow in terms of frame rate but great for when you just wanna see the outcome and not take multiple shots. The x100s colors are really good, even though there is a lack of film simulation like classic chrome, etc, you can still do a bunch of color simulations if you know how to color grade. The original X100 is absurdly sensitive to the write speed of the SD card you are using. Anything less than 95MB/s and the buffer is extremely slow to clear. If you use cards at or above that speed, the camera will become much more usable. On a personal note, I just brought my X100 LE out after several years sitting on the shelf and have loved shooting with it. I'm so glad I didn't sell it off despite having newer and more capable Fujis like the X-T3 and X-T20. I've also found the Lightning to SD card reader workflow to be about as convenient as most camera wifi connections.

    Hi! Yes! I’ve noticed that as well. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever used the x100 legacy with a fast card before. So it’s always been a somewhat slow experience for me which I rarely if ever mind. Unfortunately, there’s something wrong with my x100 original. It was working fine one day and then I left for a week and when I came back it wouldn’t turn on anymore. When putting in a new battery it goes to the language set up menu and then dies. I will be getting it fixed though because I love it that much. As far as the ad card reader. I sometimes find myself tempted to take the card reader with me when I’m shooting with my Xe4 :) it’s very convenient. And I love the files that come out of this camera. I'm just using some regular wasabi batteries that I get from amazon for about $20 with a charger included. I have a ton of them but I only ever change the battery once and that's usually for a really long outing. that being said, i do use the optical viewfinder quite a bit and I do turn the camera off and on but I find that one battery is usually enough and a spare when ever I forgot to charge the first battery.

    Turn the "OVF power save mode" ON, display mode to OVF only, Auto off 2 minutes, quick start off and you'll be happy - in that mode the sensor is turned off until you focus, measure or shoot.

    I don’t know that I shoot too fast on this camera but I have my photo review off and I typically only use the optical viewfinder so even though the buffer is a bit slow if I want to use the menu or change a setting the shutter seems to work pretty well. I also don’t shoot as many photos when using this camera as I would on a faster more modern camera. But I do work the scene with it. It’s fast enough for that. Are you shooting with picture review on? Also are you using the screen or the viewfinder and if so the evf or the optical viewfinder?

    Hey! To be honest with you, I don’t think I’ve ever really take note of my dynamic range settings for this particular camera. On my other cameras I typically go with auto or with 200. When I get home tonight I’ll check to see what it’s at but I’m gonna go ahead and say that it’s probably at 100 on this camera since I can’t remember ever going in on this camera to change the dynamic range. Good question though. I’ll message you after work with the actual confirmed setting.

    what do you think of x100s?

  • @sarifoto

    @sarifoto

    Жыл бұрын

    I’ve never used the x100s but from what I’ve heard it feels a lot like the x100 original but has the same sensor as the x70 which is a camera I do own. That alone makes me think that it’s a really amazing camera. The autofocus won’t be as fast as the newer cameras of today but I feel quite confident in saying that I would absolutely love to shoot with one. As much as I’d love to recommend the original, they’re older and the electronics inside can go bad from one day to the next so the x100s would probably be the oldest x100 series camera that I’d pay $200 or slightly higher for. If you find one at a good price I think it’ll be great camera (depending on your use of course but generally speaking I wouldn’t hesitate to get one myself). Let me know if you have any more questions and have a great week.

    is it suitable to use while hiking on trail or forest?

  • @sarifoto

    @sarifoto

    Ай бұрын

    I’ve used it while hiking many times. It’s lighter than the x100f and it’s a great carry camera. That being said, because I have an xf10 which is much smaller and has a 28mm full frame equivalent lens, I end up taking the xf10 on hikes more often than I do the x100 original but I do prefer the images and user experience of the x100 over my other cameras. It’s slower than most of my cameras but I love it. Also, when I take this camera hiking, I’ve used a camera strap while the xf10 I’ve put in my pocket. If you don’t mind having the camera on a strap or you can always put it in your back pack if you take one with you. I hope this helps.

    is possible to apply fuji recipes for the original x100?

  • @sarifoto

    @sarifoto

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Sergio, you can use fujifilm recipes but not as many as you can on newer ones because it doesn’t have all of the modern simulations like across or classic chrome or classic negative or eterna. That being said, I’m not really using in camera recipes anymore. I’m now just shooting jpgs and then adding a quick preset either in my phone or in Lightroom. It’s really quick and I like the results so much more. For that workflow the original x100 is so great! Within the next two weeks the video where I share that workflow will be up. Check back in about a week or two and I’ll be able to share with you jpg images that I’ve made with the original x100 as well as with other Fuji cameras using this workflow.

    @@sarifoto thank you for your help! I have discovered your channel today and I find it very interesting, your photos have a great feel to them and you have very interesting viewpoints. The way I found your channel is I was checking information on x100, x100s and x pro1. X100 is third of the price of those cameras, however x100s seems like a worth upgrade. What do you reckon is better - x100, x100s or x pro 1? What I am looking in a camera is a feel of a film camera - in using it and seeing it in the photos. Oh and I very much look forward to your workflow video! Subscribed! 😉

    @@sergeikozitskii4426 thanks for subscribing and welcome to the community! As far as recommendations. I’ve never used the x100s or the xpro 1. They’re both cameras that I’ve been super curious about. I do have the xe1 and that has the same sensor as the xpro1 and I also have the x70 which has the same sensor as the x100s I believe. I would probably recommend the x100s for one reason and one reason only. Recently my x100 original stopped working. The electronics just died from one day to the next. It was working fine and then a few days later when I went to turn it on again it just wouldn’t turn on anymore no matter what I did. It may be the mother board. I think the sensor of the x100 original is one of my favorite sensors of all time and if it wasn’t for the fact that this happened I would totally recommend it over the other two just because of the sensor and because of the user experience of it is so special to me. I enjoy using it more than the x100f. So much so that I’m probably going to pay a few hundred dollars to have it fixed. It’s a special camera for me. But that being said, the x100s is a tiny bit newer and would probably last you a bit longer (I would assume). The Xpro 1 is a bigger camera with a similar user experience. But it is pricier and bulkier. But you can change the lenses. If you’d like a smaller everyday carry I’d say go with the x100s. All of that being said, if I had to do it over again right now knowing what I already know, I’d still get the original :). I hope this makes sense and that it was useful and not contradictory. My suggestion is x100s but I would buy the original because that’s just my nature is what I guess I’m saying :) Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions. And thanks again for watching.

    @@sarifoto yes, everything you say makes a lot of sense, thank you for your reply. x100s and x pro1 have the same xtrans sensor. however the x100 original has a bayer sensor. I think there is still a debate present in Fujifilm community as to which sensor is better, from what I have read most people prefer xtrans, especially the second gen. I think I will stick with the x100 series, I will just have to choose between the original and the s model. Hopefully you will be able for fix your original x100 and show us some great photography with it ;)
