    “This is indoctrination” - if you’re so against indoctrination then close private schools and any school which bases its education on Christianity or another religion.

  • @elektra121

    @elektra121

    4 жыл бұрын

    The private school I teach at actually IS based on Christianity. And I teach about gender varieties and how they are natural and have to have the exact same rights each. I teach about nonbinary people and transgender. I include as much diverse religions, POC, sexualities and genders as I'm able (still not enough, I'm afraid) in my lessons. I talk about racism and sexism and ableism and how all of that is engraved in society and has to be changed (and historically has changed somewhat, luckily). And you wanna know why? Because this is what Christ would have done and my religion taught me I should do.

  • @h.a.p8278

    @h.a.p8278

    elektra121 I’m really really happy to be reassured that religion does good in this world. At the same time there are so many decisions that effect people’s education and general livelihood because of traditional views based in religion. My public school doesn’t teach even close to the extent you seem to at a private school. It would be amazing to improve the curriculums in both private and public schools but I definitely believe that it will be more difficult in the private religion based schools. Since there is a type of indoctrination in religion (in general not necessarily in the case of every spiritual or religious individual) that excludes certain groups of people.

  • @elektra121

    @elektra121

    @@h.a.p8278 Hi! Thank you for your very long answer. You and me come from very different parts of the world, apparently. You see, where I'm coming from, most of the people are Atheists (which I deem a good thing, because it means they have not be forced into any religion and are free to choose one if they so wish). Christians (and the very few people of other religions) were a marginalised group and were discriminated against by the state (not allowed to study, for example) for decades. So they know very well how it feels like to be a minority abd won't come to the s t r a n g e idea to discriminate against other minorities. On the contrary: the first LGB (I don't think they thought much about transgender/intersex people back then) were solely churchly ones - because Jesus told to help people being discriminated against. A lot of music groups (Blues, Punk etc.) were not allowed to perform in public - so only the churches allowed them to play their music. All that exclusion you associate with religion/christianity took place from the side of the (Atheist) state. Church was about being open-minded, include all people (because we are all brothers and sisters), fighting together for equal rights for all - because that is what Jesus would have wanted. You see: this exclusion thing is a thing of who is in power and works in an atheist world as hellish as in countries that deem themselves oh-so-religious (without really giving a shit about the core message of their religion). It's not about religion at all. And that's why I'm so annoyed a lot of Atheists think themselves a huge lot better people, because "they don't buy all that religious bullshit". You see, it's an easy way to feel like a great human being without doing so much as winking your little finger - only because religious people are in your opinion so much below yourself (please note that I don't mean you personally by this, because you seem a rather decent person! It's just that I encounter this mindset all too often.) Conclusion: it's not about religion. It's about which group is in power and is not critical of themself. There are public schools and private schools and religious bound and atheist ones. None of which is any indicator of how good or bad they are. (Also: in my country all private schools has to teach the exact same curriculum of the public schools. You can do more, if you like, though.) What is the case in the US can be completely different in a country of the former East block or in country in Africa or in a South Asian one. Looking down and shaming others while doing nothing yourself does not make you a better person, on the contrary! (Again, I hope you understand the 'you' doesn't mean you personally.) Every one of us has to do their best as a human being, regardless of religion or not.

My school had nothing whatsoever, I heard occasionally gossips and jokes but that's the extent of what I knew of LGBTQ+ stuff until I went to college and met people out as LGBTQ because I was finally in an environment open or safe enough for people to be out to others and themselves, only then did I learn and finally discover my sexuality, 2 years later my romantic, 3years later my gender. Big oof. I'm so glad it's finally taught (for reference I'm only early 20s,( I was in the last year before tests between year 12 and 13 mattered), and I didn't know of a single person out as anything in my school before I went to a college)

I really cant express how extremely important it is that people are taught this in schools!!!

Because if you think sheltering teens from learning about sex will do any good, you are naive.

    What REAL indoctrination looks like growing up in a very religious home and school: religious class every day, school chapel every week, church every week, bible study every week, bible camp in the holidays, talking about religion often in other classes, constant pressure to be spiritual, constantly talking about it at home and being expected to spend time reading the Bible and praying daily

  • @elektra121

    There's also the other way round: no religious education allowed in schools, plea to the state in school every week, reading hymns to the state in school, don't talk about anything remotely to do with religion openly unless you say it's all bullshit. Learning in primary school that Jesus has never lived, it is all a big fat lie. Don't get caught reading a bible! All fairy-tale and youth books (Anne Frank's diary, for example) are "cleaned" of words hinting to any religious believe. If you go to church, no academic studies for you! Needless to say, it hasn't changed my religion - it rather kindled the interest in it.

    I go to a religious catholic school that actually doesnt push beliefs. Everyone is caring, accepting with small light teasing just to annoy. All Teachers respect your beliefs, sexuality ect which means my school is like one of the few schools that allows students who are lgbt, atheists, muslims etcs and don’t discriminate them. Of course we do friday masses every once a month but you dont have to pay attention just donate for the support of blind people and just like sit down and quietly chat with friends. Whats good is that we give blessings like necklaces just for good health which is a different color than the one given to the religious kids. A little bonus in programs and talent shows everyone show their gayness resulting to HAPPY GAY SCREAMS and have extra points(for PE, Music, and english classes grades) for audiences impact.

    My christian mom: Study the bible! Me, a gay baby: Ok. _When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment._ (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

Although I dont think religion should be taught in school, it shouldnt be discredited either (unless its religious studies or philosophy and its relavant, still opinions shouldnt be forced). Ideally it shouldnt even be mentioned, religion should eb a private affair as not all students are religious or believe in the same God.

    Amazingly, exposure to people who are trans HAS caused me to question my gender identity! ... I'm now _not only_ 100% positive that I'm still cis, I'm also: • consciously aware of this for the first time; • appreciative of my body in ways I'd never thought to consider; • grateful for the privilege this has granted throughout my life. Because creators like Jamie are willing to share their stories in such depth, I've come to see things I never would have otherwise, and it's made me feel: • saddened that there's more intolerance and injustice out there than I can fathom; • determined not to contribute to anyone's sense of these, even by ignorance; • hopeful that this exposure will, in time, lead society to treat all people as simply people. TL;DR Thanks to the wonders of KZread, I've learned so much about the experiences of people who are different from me; in the process I've become better acquainted with myself. 🏳️‍🌈🍍

They invite several princesses but none click with the prince. One of them arrives with her brother though and the two princes fall in love with each other immediately and get married. We had a world book day teacher swap where we had a different teacher for about half an hour and they read us some of their favourite book. I was in Year 3 at the time so I was 7, and most of us were past that kind of book (in terms of it was written for a younger age group). However this teacher came to us, and said she'd read us that, especially as it was short and we would be able to finish it. As far as I know, all the other teachers were reading Roald Dahl books and things like that. She asked first if we wanted to share what we thought would happen, and I predicted the basic storyline, and she asked me if I'd read it before. I hadn't, but clearly at that age I had a gaydar. When we read it, the only kids who didn't get it were the ones with loud obnoxious parents who liked to spread their conservative views. What does that tell you about parents?

    Story time- I was never taught about the LGBTQ+ community in school, and I wish I was. Here's the scoop: In fifth grade I knew this person who was a girl. I didn't see them until late middle school, and they were a boy. I got so confused and had the mindset of "You can't just BE a boy if you are a girl." But a year later, and lots of researching, and 2 out of 3 of my best friends came out to me as trans, and I totally accept and understand them. School never taught me to accept and understand the LGBTQ+ community. That made it even more confusing because it took me up until really recently to figure out who *I* was. I finally believe I'm biromantic ace, but I had to spend loads of time trying to figure it out. So that's why I think, just from personal experience, that schools SHOULD at least teach about it a bit. I had to figure out on my own what everything meant, and THAT was confusing, let me tell you.

    Same. I have so many regrets related to not learning about lgbtq+ stuff until I found it myself online in middle school. I remember in 2nd grade there were two girls who said they wanted to get married when they grew up, and I remember insisting that they couldn't. Not because I thought it was wrong, but because I had never heard of that happening and so thought they wouldn't be allowed to, and I didn't want them to grow up planning on it only to be disappointed. Even though it was so long ago I still feel so bad about that. I also had a friend who's ftm and growing up (before he came out) everyone assumed he was a boy because if how he dressed, and any time they did I would vehemently correct them because I thought that I was defending my friends right to be a girl who didn't conform to gender norms. But I was basically doing the opposite of what I thought I was doing. Luckily I stopped when I learned what being trans was on KZread cause I realized he might be, but I just really hope I never did it in front of him cause that probably have made him feel crappy. But yeah anyways. If lgbtq+ people had even just been mentioned as existing in my schooling then maybe those things wouldn't have happened. Even as a senior in highschool I've only had one English teacher who talked about queer stuff, and it sucked because she was a truly awful teacher(like absolutely insane. She ended getting fired) so no one wanted to participate, and she also literally tried to make people out themselves in front of the class. Blah

    *Here's a description of what it's like in schools where there is strong LGBT+ education:* In Canberra, the capital of Australia (population 430,000), it's compulsory for high schoolers in government-run schools to learn about LGBT+ stuff as part of health classes. This includes the difference between sex, gender, and sexuality, as well as different sexualities (and how they're all fine!) and that gender is a spectrum (the model we were taught with had two lines between male and female, with agender and genderfluid as midpoints). Both my high school and senior high school had very proud LGBT+ and Allies clubs run by enthusiastic teachers, and there were lots of posters in hallways and classrooms saying things like 'Trans rights are human rights' and advertising helplines, including ones for LGBT+ people. Someone many years ago had even hung a huge rainbow flag along the ceiling of the student foyer, and no one had taken it down. Hundreds of students would pass under it every day, and it was never a big deal because we had been taught not to hate. I remember one day someone opened a rainbow umbrella in the corridor and several trans kids went to stand under it, proudly taking in the 'gay bad luck'. This sort of pride and acceptance was totally normal so I was legitimately surprised to learn most schools aren't like this. Having only been to these kinds of schools, I can't compare much, but I will say there were lots of openly gender non-conforming and questioning kids and everyone I saw (including the teachers) was supportive. They had so much pride and self-confidence. And there was still a majority of straight cis people, the difference was that they had learned compassion and respect. Also our local government is pretty great, in the lead-up to the 2017 Marriage Referendum it made a bunch of rainbow buses!

    I mean, I could hand you a very long list of reasons why there is no good state government in Australia. For example how many people support the National's bill to restrict language and define trans people out of legislative protections? But otherwise, yea. Honestly Australian schools are pretty lit for lgbtqia+ kids. Have been for a while now. When I was in highschool (some 10+ years ago now) it wasn't *great*, but the support for us was still there and it was pretty solid. It was really only other students that ever caused problems. Like I got expelled in highschool for getting threatened by a bunch of dudes with knives because I kept getting between them and the less physically capable GSRM kids when they wanted to go gay bashing. But the school counselor ended up quitting over it because he'd worked really, really hard to keep me alive, enrolled and attending, along with a couple of my friends around the same time. Like if we were having gender or sexuality related issues the counselor actually knew what to say and how to help us, and he was incredibly warm and accepting. Even the pastoral care officers (basically counselors but religious) were super good with us.

    And religion isn't confusing for kids? If anything, it's *the lack* of LGBT education that confuses them. So in second and third grade of high-school I felt really weird about the fact that EVERYONE was getting crushes but I didn't. And people would try to comfort me saying "Oh I had a relationship in later years too" but when I would aske them when they had their first real crush they would sa "Oh, second grade or so". It got to a point where I felt so excluded that I needed a therapist to get trough it. I mean I liked people fine, I could IMAGINE myself in relatioship and I even had small crushes but then my friends would start talking about sexual stuff and that never even OCCURED to me. One of them asked me if I'm lesbian, and I wish I could've say "Yes, omg, I have a crush on that cute girl from fourth grade" but I didn't. Then we had an ethics class (you could either take ethics or catholic religion in my school. Since I was raised as an agnostic, of course I took ethics) on LGBT issues. And I heard the term "asexual". I thought "OMG that's me! That might just be me!" My understanding of my sexuality changed since, I'm either on a very sex-positive side of ace spectrum or on very low sex drive of alloexual specrtum. Turns out I'm also bi. So if anyone asks I would brobably just say bisexual or, if it's someone more versed in LGBTQA terms I'd say biromantic gray-ace. But that moment of realization, realizing that there isn't something wrong with me, that I'm fine, just different, was such a relief. There were people who would tell me "What are the chances? There is only 1% of ace people in the world!" Well, there is also only 1% of people with congenital heart defects too. What are the chances....oh, wait, wait...I was born with pulmonary stenosis....yeah I have that thing only 1% of people in the world have (actually, only 1% of people with congenital heart defects have what I had so...yeah WHAT ARE THE CHANCES!). Just because something is rare, doesn't mean you're not going to bump into it. My point was, just learning about existence of ace people (we didn't really get deep into it since a heated debate arouse during this ethics class between us on more liberal side and people who are anything but tolerant.) helped me. As far as I know, only two of us from that class fall somewhere within LGBTQA acronym (funny enough, we became close friends during these classe and we both identify as being on ace spectrum). So no, it didn't turn all of us gay or trans or ace. It only helped us who already were LGBTQA understand ourselves better. Ok, this comment is long enough but I just wanted to say that the guy who was by far the loudest in the previously mentioned debate was not actually debating. He was just screaming hatefull things and at one point he refuted mine "so you're saying that kids are better of in orphanage where the don't have ANY kind of parental figure then in loving home that just happens to have two mums?" with "Shut up you woman, you fucking serbian (I'm from Croatia, my grandparents are Serbian, there are tensions between our nations) cunt, you must be a d**ke and f***ot lover, you communist trash!". Oh yeah, I'm sure anyone would agree he had such compelling arguments!

Without those things I would never of known who I was and I would be in a confused sad state now. Apparently she doesn't think she can "go back straight" now, but she's happy with her lil stunt... Honestly from all the other things she pulled off in her life (Including visibly changing her natural hair colour over the course of a month, using what she described as "Just a little diet and some self-convincing". She cut off the old colour, grew the new one out long, kept it for a few years and then just let it fade back to what it was before...) I'm pretty sure she is some other breed of human, so probably doesn't even apply to the rest of the species... But still, the ability to do that is about as changeable in a person as them being gay, so again, it is a matter of being born that way... However, I think sexuality can be changed, just like nearly everything. What we like is in our brain, so poking the right clumps o' cells the right way could change it in a person, just like it can change other deeply engrained things, but unless done completely voluntarily that is about as ethical as chemical sterilisation, and before humanity can manipulate a brain for any purpose that way we'll either be colonising a second solar system, or most likely extinct... Of course, even if that is true, it does not give anyone the right to go spew about changing sexuality, even if that technology was available, and certainly not now. As a teacher, I hear complaints about how totally awful schools are like weekly. And, you know what? I (mostly) disagree. People are expecting schools to be places of learning in basic reading/writing/calculating skills, theoretical knowledge and practical competences in diverse sciences, multiple languages, music, arts, history, society/cultures, economics, religion, philosophy, current and historical politics, computer sciences and programming, moreover practical life skills like cooking, housekeeping, driving, "doing taxes", how to fill out various forms, how to vote, how to plan your learning, how to do research, first aid, parenting, sexology, healthy eating, healthy lifestyle, general social competences like obeying rules, civility and etiquette. Then school should be a safe space, a space where kids get physical exercise, a space where they are under constant supervison yet as free as possible, a space where they get to know 'real life', a space where kids can spend their afternoon with 'sensible activities'. School buildings are expected to be spacious, accessible, well equipped and beautiful. And all of this with the least amount of money humanly possible (and even then it is deemed to be "too much"). Teachers are expected to be experts in every tiny detail of their subjects, role models in every regard, model citizens, surrogate parents, mentors, social workers, chastisers, doing every single lesson in the most creative way possible. They should give good grades yet not grade unjustly. They should give homework, yet should not give homework. They should use various methods, especially the most modern ones. They should be friends to their pupils, yet keep their distance. And all of this is expected to work picture-perfectly on young people when their bodies and minds at the exact same time have a lot to do with becoming adults, finding friends, walking away from trouble, experiencing self-discovery, first love and lovesickness - in the lucky case of them being healthy and belonging to a loving and financially and mentally/emotionally stable family. Do you see how this can't work - and school HAS TO fall short of this skyhigh expectations? Most of the learning done in life is not up to school - it's up to you. Don't blame school that you were to idle to google a thing or ask someone who knows. Just saying. ;)

    @@elektra121 That is all a good argument, and it's a lot of pressure of teachers * whispers* pay them more, they deserve it Most of this is the fault of curriculum, as well. No one is going to need to know anything beyond elementary-school math, unless they become a mathematician. However, people are going to need to know how to buy a house, get a job, etc., none of which we're learning. Plus, let kids follow their interests. If a kid has a passion for music, art, theatre, or anything else, and if they don't know their passion, give them time and space to follow it or figure it out. Don't overload them with homework or other courses. I took all academics last year and had a complete mental breakdown by January, whereas I'm taking drama and art this year and it's going great. Anyways, most of this is down to curriculum and school districts faults, and I have a lot of respect teachers.

    That priests argument is really disgusting. Either he gets to decide how a child gets to live their life and self identify or what, he denies them an education? How can they not see that this is a human rights issue, not some secret agenda to corrupt youth. Wtf would be the point of corrupting youth anyway, where as anyone can see the value in protecting and furthering human rights. As always I love your video and respect your way of always staying fair and logical while also being funny and entertaining.

    Hey Jamie, would you consider doing a video reacting to Dr Kathleen Stock? She's a philosophy professor (/TERF) at Sussex uni and spearheaded this anti-stonewall campaign amongst academics... there have apparently been soo many complaints made about her but the uni doesn't seem to be paying attention to students concerns at all... Somehow she manages to justify her transphobic comments by describing it as important 'philosophical debate' (as if that excuse would be accepted if she said something like 'well, do black lives /really/ matter?') 😐 Turns out she's going to be teaching a feminism module next year and in all honesty, I'm terrified thinking about the influence she'll end up having on people with all her fear-mongering... Anyway! It'd be awesome to hear what your take is on all of this! (Her twitter handle is DocStockk - proceed with caution!) (Oh, also loving the kimono 👍👍)
