...I might have figured out a way for Kayley to be a more compelling character. What if she was resentful of her father and his position as a knight? From her point of view, Sir Lionel isn't doing anything particularly exciting like slaying invaders or dragons--he's just doing the "boring" job of riding around helping people, leading Kayley to believe she could do his job better and be a properly swashbuckling knight. Meanwhile in Camelot, Nimue--who's the villain of this version of the story--is having the same problems in her relationship with her mentor, Merlin. She doesn't particularly care about his position as advisor to the King; she just wants his amazing powers, thinking she could use them to greater effect. This would set Kayley and Nimue up as parallels to each other and make the point about how truly great individuals care less about *having* great power and more about how they use that power to help others. Call it the medieval Spiderman treatment, in a way. :P Also, having Nimue there to do the whole "sealing Merlin away in a tree forever" thing would create a conflict that makes more sense--after all, without the man he's trusted since childhood, King Arthur isn't entirely sure what to do anymore, and Camelot grows weaker as a result, prompting action from our heroes.

Bonus: Nimue resents how Sir Lionel trains Gareth almost like they're father and son, yet Merlin seemingly ignores her desire to have greater control over her magic, treating her more as a servant than an apprentice. At the end Merlin fills us in that he was training Nimue to learn self-control and patience and when it's appropriate to use magic, but she failed his lessons.

@@thirteenfury God, and that would make Gareth's relationship with Merlin not only a lot more specific (as oppposed to the vague hinting they did in the original), but really heartbreaking and a further counterpoint to Kayley and Nimue. They both resented their respective mentors... Gareth loved both of his. And the two of them being gone means that there's no one left who doesn't believe he's worthless because of his blindness, hence his self-imposed exile. We are just gonna write a better movie right here in this comments section... XD

if we're writing a better movie in the comments, then I feel like we should also fix the romance between Kayley and Gareth, and for this, I think the framework that's set up will work beautifully. basically, Gareth thinks that his training was cut short, and now that no one believes in him anymore, he'll never be able to complete it or take up his desired position as a knight. but really, he has all of the core qualities that one would expect to see from a knight. he's already naturally inclined to be empathetic to people in need, especially because his own life circumstances have been so hard on him... and his time in the forest has forced him to use the combat skills he learned in practical ways every day, and even develop some of his own based on how he functions without his eyesight. he's a bit unconventional when compared to a classically trained knight, but he does what's most important for a knight to do morally. and this is what he would teach Kayley. I'd love to see her being actually fairly competent in a fight, or with a sword, because her ambition to become a knight causes her to actually practice a lot... but maybe she's a bit self centered, and finds herself in situations where she can protect and defend herself just fine, but fails to really help anyone else with her actions in the moment. she has all these grand ideas about what it would take to win a glorious victory, but she gets so fixated on checking all the boxes for a good adventure, that she forgets to act like a good person. which isn't to say that she'd actively be a bad person... but she's really much more used to looking out for herself first. and you could give her a backstory full of people doubting her, which made her super extra extremely eager to prove them all wrong... but also gave her a very adversarial relationship toward other people in general. but Gareth and Kayley could definitely connect in terms of people doubting their capabilities, and Gareth being the empathetic person that he is in this version of things, would probably recognize some of Kayley's bitterness at being treated like she was never going to amount to anything. he'd probably have to soften her up a bit by actually recognizing her legitimate talents before she'd really start to listen to him, and he'd probably be totally frustrated with her at first, but his frustration might just be that he sees an unflattering reflection of feelings that he's felt before when he looks at Kayley. it makes Kayley into a competent yet flawed character, and it makes their eventual feelings for each other make a lot more sense. and it also connects them via their mutual aspiration to measure up to Sir Lionel. Kayley wants to prove herself to be just as good as her father, and Gareth wants to do right by his mentor... they're both chasing the same inspirational figure, but with entirely different emotions as the driving force behind their tenacity. and the formation of their bond would also be entirely wrapped up in the plot, because a lot of these feelings would come up as the result of battling against the main villain.

Is this the same forbidden forest where Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way and Draco had it their way until Dumblydore interrupted them?

The sad thing is though, I really like the idea of a mother character having a song praying for her daughter's safety; it gives the mother so much more agency in that moment than the daughter simply running away; you're unsure if they're ever going to be able to see each other again. But I swear, I hated those fricking dragons even when I was five. >_>

The 'post-Aladdin Comic Relief' trend that ruined this movie (and Hunchback, and others) really cements for me that movie studios really are just a cargo cult. They don't actually understand what it is that makes audiences like things, so they blindly ape formulas with no understanding of context, and more often than not shit out literal garbage with no idea it's terrible until it hits theaters.

And these characters only appear for a few scenes and not a central focus of the feature. And, I have to admit they can be entertaining. They don't even have a central focus in a scene, they are not loud, take all the focus, or doing unnecessary pop jokes, they didn't ruin a movie that took all the steps beforehand. It had a dark and powerful story, memorable and complex characters, unforgettable songs and more. How are freaking three characters that barely appear in the whole movie, barely doing something stupid, barely interrupt the story and are pretty funny ruined such a fantastic movie?!

# Poor Gary Oldman

12:44 - These characters and their song are a perfect example of the post-Aladdin comic relief you mentioned. They try to rip off the reference-heavy humour of _Friend Like Me_ without actually understanding why it, and the Genie as a whole, worked so well. Genie's anachronistic pop culture references were a result of Robin William's one-of-a-kind ad-libbing that the animators worked around. Many of the gags are quick-fire and you'll usually miss three in the time it takes you to notice one. The character himself is also so lovable and his movements are so well animated and executed that the jokes are still funny even if you don't get what they're referencing. In Quest For Camelot the references are pushed to the forefront and dragged out, as if they're begging the audience to notice and laugh rather than trusting them to do it on their own. Additionally, the Genie is firmly established as a supremely magical being with phenomenal cosmic powers, and it's fair to assume that his anachronisms come from an ability to see the future or travel through time (an episode of the Aladdin TV show later confirmed the latter). And the other characters are clearly just as awestruck and/or confused as the audience would be, so once again, the jokes are funny even if you don't get the references. Devon and Cornwall are talking dragons, but that's the only supernatural thing the film actually establishes about them, so it makes no sense for them to reference modern day things that don't exist yet in the medievel. And none of the other characters actually react to these anachronisms or most of their jokes for that matter, so it seems even more jarring.

@@superfanmusicmaker I don't know if it's the same episode, but I did see one recently where they had to conveniently say that Genie was out of town "hanging out with some friends," and he was folding a newspaper hat with Napoleon. That episode is called "Vocal Hero" in case anyone wants to check that out.

This movie is a childhood favorite of mine and I'm happy to see somebody review it with a much more calm and patient demeanor than the Nostalgia Critic did.

The Nostalgia Critic's revews have always been intended as more funny than analytical. Even if he sometimes touched upon good talking points, in the end they were mostly accidental. Diva touches on the problems with this movie far better, though at the same time, there's a lot of good to be found here if you're willing to forgive the film's studio-mandated flaws.

Dunes8 I never understood why animators rely on that trope so badly. You can make a villainous character without making look OBVIOUSLY evil (look at Gaston, Mother Gothel, and even Frollo). If you have to draw them evil-liking from the bat, at least explain why that is. A nice backstory for the guy would’ve made sense, heck even his song would’ve been a nice way to explain how he became the way he did.

You forgot the worst sin this movie committed: Prematurely murdering _The Iron Giant._ No joke. When this film fell flat at the box office, it convinced Warner Bros. that it wouldn’t be worth their time to market _The Iron Giant._ Of course, close to no one knew about it, and it resulted in the film failing, feeding into Warner Bros. preconceptions regarding animated films.

The same basic contempt from the studio towards their own animation legacy is apparent. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King didn't need "fixing" yet here we are with three vastly inferior "live action" movies. And when talking about the problematic elements of older or more recent films (alleged or otherwise) that should still be open to conversation rather than trying to pave them over.

PhoenixRising87 This is utter bull crap! XD The designs for Mulan had been finalized long before this sorry Camelot failure was even in production. Do you have any idea how quickly development art and model sheets leak around the studios, once it’s made available to the crew? People lunch, after all, and the studios were not far from each other at the time. There might be a slight resemblance (and that’s really a stretch), but if anything, WB had their hands on the Disney model sheets long before the designs for this turd were done, and likely ripped the Disney project off. Disney Feature Animation even had an in-studio screening of Camelot to laugh at and show exactly how NOT to make an animated feature! It was hilarious!

You know what could have been done to save this protagonist? If she believed that in order to be a good knight she needed to fiercely protect everyone around her, like her father who died to save King Arthur. This would give her something to motivate her to be a good knight and gradually learn that she doesn't need to overexert herself or that everyone needs protecting. That would give her actual chemistry with Garret instead of pointless banter. In traveling through unfamiliar places she could learn she actually needs to listen to someone other than herself in order to help them, like a knight. Making her flawed would give her a legitimate ark, which would be much better than she was in the actual movie.

I would make Kaylee someone who is a person who likes to think outside of the box and this comes into play with one of the biggest changes I’d make to the movie which is to make Cornwall and Devon two separate dragons with contrasting personalities voiced by John Cleese and Dom Deluise respectfully. They are still outcasts in dragon society but this time it’s because they refuse to fight any knights which is a huge milestone into gaining acceptance in their culture. Cornwall is a pacifist intellectual dragon who believes that fighting knights is beneath him. Devon is your typical Dom Deluise coward who has a heart of gold and wants to help but needs encouragement from the protagonist to help him overcome his fears. Think Tiger from American Tail but as a dragon. Devon is terrified of fighting a knight and every time the word “knight” (and night) is said, he starts freaking out. Kaylee then comes up with the brilliant idea that if Cornwall and Devon help her retrieve Excalibur, they’d be helping save the day and in the process fight some knights which would help them be accepted by the other dragons as the rule is that a dragon has to fight a knight in order to be a part of dragon society but it never says that it has to be one of King Arthur’s knights. An evil knight would count because he’s still a knight no matter who he is working for.

The sad thing is that the animation isn't too bad for the 90's. Imagine what this movie could have been like if it had more competent, less cliched writing!

Ah yes the movie I admit to having a very guilty pleasure relationship with. I will enjoy seeing you rip into it

Hey, I like it, too, mainly for Eric Idle and Don Rickles, but David "HitMan" Foster did write some good songs, with "The Prayer" actually being a breakout hit. I think "Through Your Eyes" may have been as well. I remember hearing it on the radio more than once.

Hugh Mann I liked it, too. And, personally, I think people should cut Kayley some slack. I mean, sure, she wants to be the world's greatest knight, but, she isn't stupid! I mean, if you were unarmed and faced up against evil mutants that had weapons for hands, and you were terribly outnumbered, would you try to stand and fight or would you run for your life? Of course, one could argue that it didn't stop Garret from fighting them, but, Garret was trained to fight. Kayley was not.

I never knew there was so much meddling with this movie. I guess that explains why it was so bad. And while you mentioned the disconnect between the action scene and "The Prayer", I'm surprised you didn't count that as a sin. The difference is so bizarre. Even if you DID mute the background noises, I really don't think that song can be set to a scene filled with action, a chase, and a desperate escape from monsters. It would've been better suited to a post-chase scene, focusing on the mother and Kayley resting in the woods.

I do love the music in this movie on its own (yes, even "If I didn't have you") and I do admire the fact that th th chose to go with a disabled protagonist who isn't "fixed" at the end of the movie. That said, there are a lot of things that could have been done to improve this film. The biggest one being "Fleshing out the relationship between Kayley and Julianna". Like, what if Julianna talked with her daughter at some point and said something like "I don't want you to become a knight because I don't want to lose you like I lost your father. Please stay at home and do things like gathering taxes, distributing land properly, and finding a consort with whom you can make some heirs". Also, having to deal with an arranged marriage (even if this society is less sexist than actual Medieval England) would give Kayley a sympathetic reason for wishing to be a knight, rather than just "I'm entitled to knighthood because my dad was a knight before me and I don't have any siblings".

Something I randomly remembered while watching this video and getting to the love song part is when some people say "men and women can't just be friends" and I think that belief stems from movies because the male and female protagonists almost always fall in love and it's stupid.

I wouldn't say it's all because of movies, so much as that it's influenced by how nearly all stories across basically all media accidentally reinforce this idea of "boy meets girl, plot happens, boy wins girl," which often gets stuck in children's understanding of the world before they're mature enough to make any meaningful friendships. The ubiquity of the romantic subplot and how it influences worldviews is a root for all sorts of twisted ideas about romance, like "nice guys are entitled to girls," "you need a relationship to be happy/normal," and "you need to keep writing romance subplots whenever two opposite-gender characters are in a plot that doesn't openly prevent romance...and maybe if it does".

Yeah, I’m sick of the whole “he’s a boy and she’s a girl so they should kiss” thing. Half the time, it’s just assumed that because a male and female character of roughly similar ages are in the same story, that’s enough for the audience to buy that they’re in love, so the romance isn’t really developed, so it feels forced when they suddenly start acting like a couple. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good romance-emphasis on GOOD. If you’re going to have a romance, it needs to be well-developed and serve the plot, not just be two characters suddenly kissing at the expense of the plot, especially when said characters have shown no hint of romantic chemistry until their sudden kiss.

Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. I thought it was pretty good, didn't see a whole lot wrong with it.

If there is one good thing this movie did right, its the animation. The effects are stunning, the movements are very smooth, the characters have a lot of details and have a creative supply of character design.

Ben Burke which is what drags the character down. I, for one, have never liked Urkel's shrill, nasally voice. It's like nails on a chalkboard.

From what I've read about the book, most of what I found memorable was a Warner Brothers addition. My intuition is that the original version (probably just a script or something) looked likely to turn into a fantasy movie without the mass-market appeal to draw a crowd through basic marketing or the quality and/or novelty to bring in viewers by word of mouth. That's what happened with Fan4stic, and probably a lot of other movies affected by studio meddling; what they had at the time didn't look like it could succeed on either its broad appeal or its genuine quality, so they hacked in one of the two and hoped for the least bad.

Honestly they didn't even "needed" the comedy relief dragons with how comical the villains ended up been. I laughed at Rupert and the grifind more than anyone else in the movie.

I have an idea of how they could have incorporated the dragons and make them better in the process. First off they are two separate characters from the start and are voiced by John Cleese and Dom Deluise. They are outcasts from the other dragons because they refuse to fight knights which is a rite of passage for their culture. Cornwall is a sophisticated intellectual dragon who thinks violence is beneath him and Devon is your typical Dom Deluise coward. Kaylee then comes up with the perfect way for them to be accepted by the other dragons which is they help her fight Ruber’s evil knights and it would count as fighting a knight as the rule never says that the knight had to be one of King Arthur’s.

It's sad, because the story has such potential. I think in the right hands, it would've been great. The disconnect between the songs and the characters and tone is jarring and there's so many pointless cliches. Some of the songs are nice, but again, they don't match the tone or anything else.

You wouldn't even need to change the plot that much. Make Kaylee half the active heroine the movie thinks she is, even out the tone, and have Ruber's henchmen either not be comic relief or not the only way he gets stuff done 90% of the time, and the movie would at least rise a bit above the Disney Clone label. Define the main characters and cut the annoying ones on top of that, and you've got the potential to make a classic that clones the *good* parts of Disney along with the easy stuff.

This is honestly a nostalgic guilty pleasure movie for me. Even for all its flaws I can’t hate it. Also, voice mismatch aside, I Stand Alone is an awesome song. I’m kinda surprised it wasn’t a Saving Grace.

All of the songs, for the most part, were pretty great. And (forgive the pun, it's not intentional) as stand alone songs, without the context of the movie as a whole, they're actually really beautiful and would probably do well if this had been literally any other musical movie. A movie that actually knew how to put these songs to good use. But, because of the storyline, and the way the songs are presented, the beauty is muddled. For instance, the Celine Dion song. I watched this movie when I was very young, and back then, her song bored me and felt out of place. Years later, when I was much older, it still bored me and felt out of place. Shortly after, I began playing a scuba diving game on the Wii, and the majority of the soundtrack was Celtic Woman music, and wouldn't you know it? They did a cover for Celine's song. And I LOVED it. It was gorgeous and I had so much fun calmly swimming through the water, listening to this song while I collected lost treasures and discovered new fish. I had no recollection of it being in this movie, at all. When I later re-watched the movie, it was jarring, because sure as sh*t, that's the song I love. I closed my eyes, and for the first time while watching this movie, I enjoyed listening to the mother sing her piece. It's a crying shame that the story falls flat, because with a good story to string them together, these songs would have been really, REALLY nice to watch and listen to. On My Father's Wings and Stand Alone are wonderful songs as well, if only they weren't attached to such annoyingly stereotypical characters.

While I agree somewhat (as an aspie, I related to that song a lot, so I definitely agree that it's awesome; in fact, Garrett is awesome. Someone should remake this movie with _him_ as the protagonist!), I feel like the voice mismatch was too much for Diva to consider it a saving grace. Which, honestly, fair enough.

@@silversamurai0267 Really, the only one that's actually bad is Ruber's Song, which was _probably_ supposed to remind us that he's a bit too insane to actually form a coherent song, but looking back, that's really NOT an excuse because I've seen better songs that play that kinda thing. Even "If I Didn't Have You" isn't that bad when you remove it from the movie's context--it was long and I believe still is a staple of silly AMVs.

Well, that was a really nice review. You had a lot of positive opinions and this was a nice time. I guess Lucifer is finally easing up- "Next Case: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Coming Out of Their Shells" Oh, f**k.

Jan Mikhail Gaid Yet “The Iron Giant” bombed at the box office due to “Quest for Camelot”. Yes really! WB attributed the box office failure of “Quest for Camelot” to people disliking the film because it wasn’t made by Disney. 🙄 Therefore, they decided to throw in the towel and not market “The Iron Giant” out of fear it would bomb at the box office, which it did anyway. 😂 I loathe the theory of *“people hate animated films because they’re not made by Disney”* because it negates the existence of great non-Disney animated films like “The Secret of NIMH”, “An American Tail”, “The Land Before Time”, “The Prince of Egypt”, “South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut”, “The Simpsons Movie”, and any of the “Hayao Miyazaki” films like “Spirited Away”.

I understand they changed the heroine's name from Lynette (an actual name from Arthurian legend and from the source novel on which this is very, VERY loosely based) to Kayley after one of the animators' daughters. Because really, "Kayley" sounds like a name from medieval England and not at all like a late twentieth-century girls' name, doesn't it?

I was literally just talking to someone about this, like yeah, not an anachronistic name in the leeeeast. Definitely doesn’t lock the time period the movie could have likely been made into, roughly, the years 1996-2003, does it, “Kayley”? Maybe her sisters are named macKenzie, Tori, and Madison? Maybe she has a brother named Jayden or Chad.

17:30- The funny thing is there is an explanation for this. He smiled at his wife for less than a second. I’m not even joking. That’s why we’re supposed to buy this change in character. I only noticed that because I happened to look at the right side of the screen when it happened. That’s just lazy.

Yeah, can confirm: His heel-face-turn is spurred by seeing his mate in a cage, at which point he presumably realized that Rupert had to be stopped. Would've been nice if the camera at least focused on that for a moment or two, instead of just letting it happen in the background before he speaks up.

The original novel didn't focus on any of the three or four standard Arthurian plot points, so Ruber is probably the end result of adapting the book's villain, then adapting that, then tweaking whatever came out, etc. @@metademetra The way I see it, any Arthurian story which brings up Galehaut the Uncrowned King is worth checking out. Not that I've found any...

That quip about the Sonny and Cher episode of Scooby Doo is the most accurate thing I've ever heard.

Garrett was my first childhood crush. I watched this movie so many times because of him, everything was forgiven so long as Garrett was on screen

The sad part is that most of the non-comedic music itself isn't terrible, just terribly implemented. Setting aside Bryan "Someone Else's Star" White, one of my favorite singers (Andrea Corr, lead singer of The Corrs) is Kayley's singing voice, and another of my favorites (Leann Rimes) does the 'breakaway pop hit' version of "Looking Through Your Eyes". It is the weakest single of her career by far, it's true, but adolescent me really didn't care. Also, the opening number, "United We Stand", may have lyrics cornier than Kansas in August (thanks to Kyle Kallgren for the immensely swipable quote), but the Celtic craze of the late 90s really did wonders for the instrumentation. The drums and strings alone are well worth a listen. Also I have no idea what that male chorus is chanting in the background before the lyrics properly start up, but it SOUNDS incredible. Yes, the actual lyrics are incredibly weak (and really show this film's American roots, probably more so than The Sword in the Stone, the other famous American animated feature set around Arthurian mythos), but if you can find an instrumental track, I HIGHLY encourage you hear it for yourself. The seams in this movie show in a way that's painful to watch, because you can easily spot the places where this could and SHOULD have been a great epic fantasy musical on par with Disney's contemporary offerings. They had the talent and the creativity (there are still some astonishing visuals and 2D animation to be found even here), but executive meddling left its mark, and took what was great down to barely watchable, and then only with the sound off during the non-musical numbers (and the Villain song, and the comedy relief song...)

The Prayer is also very beautiful and it’s a shame how it was used in the movie. The idea of Kaylee’s mother praying for her daughter’s safety in the form of a song is a great idea and Celine did a great job performing it as always even without any of the long high notes she’s famous for.

I think that if they were two separate dragons who decide to help the heroes out of the interest in stopping the bad guy to gain the respect of their peers who bully them because they are respectfully too cowardly (Devon) and docile (Cornwall) where the other dragons are aggressive and think that surviving a battle with the knights is a rite of passage to becoming a true dragon. Devon and Cornwall have never done this ritual and are passed the age that it typically occurs. Devon is afraid of so many things that he rarely leaves his cave while Cornwall despises unnecessary violence and would rather settle differences without fighting and this makes them both outcasts and each other’s only friends until they meet Kaylee and Garrett who help them realize that they are far more than that and that helping retrieve Excalibur could help the other dragons respect them because they would get to fight evil knights and it’d still count as completing the ritual as the rules never said that the knights had to be good guys.

"because power of cooperation or some shit" This isn't even a humorous oversimplification; it's all the explanation the movie gives, with the same amount of detail.

No you're missing the most baffling detail: The thing they decided to start agreeing on was "humans be fine." All throughout the movie both characters were kind of skeevy, talking about wooing human women and actually lowkey ogling Kaley. And Garrett got them to agree on something by going "You both love Kaley, don't you?" Moral of the story: dragon boners solve your problems.

I swear to you guys this movie was so loved in Italy because of the excellent dub! The songs are so good in Italian (both in lyrics and performance), that I'm really shocked about how it sounds in English: the performances are so bland, so emotionless, they sound almost amateur-ish comparing it to the Italian version. Anyway totally still a guilty pleasure.

He's supposed to look villainous, which traditionally means both "scary" and "ugly". Quasimodo was supposed to look ugly but not villainous; it's not too surprising that Ruber looks like Quasi on meth and steroids.

I actually love "On My Father's Wings" as one of the more memorable songs of this movie growing up as a kid, even more than "The Prayer", which apparently went on to be famous out of the context of this movie? (Going by Nostalgia Critic's reaction, at least). Agreement on how they should have handled that one... muting would have definitely helped. But also... why do reviewers (because Diva is far from the first) keep thinking that Garret's blindness should have been cured by the sword being returned to the stone? He lost his eyesight of a natural tragedy (iirc, a random fire in the barn) many years ago. Why would undoing a lot of dark magic caused by the villain's interference in this movie undo that too? I can't see where it would even be implied possible, tbh.

Hex Maniac Quinn maybe people wonder that because of the fact that when everything is being reversed Devon and Cornwall are separated till they decide to remain conjoined... but they were hatched like that so if they could have had separate bodies due to excalibur being returned to the stone it’s an argument for Garrett regaining sight. Just a theory for the reason why some think he should have been able to see again at the end.

Hex Maniac Quinn Garret might as well not be blind, because there's parts where he notices things that he shouldn't notice if he's blind. For example, he was the one to notice when Devon and Cornwall were flying. I'm like "How the Frank Frinklefelcker do you know they're flying if you're blind?"

@@thomashuffman3237 I always just assume he felt or heard their wing flaps or where their voices were coming from or other such shenanigans. I mean he doesn't have a literal sonar like Daredevil, but other senses being heightened isn't an alien concept.

Two things that bugged me most about Ruber were 1.) His pupils/irises keep disappearing, and 2.) THOSE RAGGED-ASS FINGERNAILS!

To a certain degree, I liked this movie. But that love was more directed towards the music, to be honest. United We Stand is my absolute favorite song from this

If there is a thing this movie got right its the animation. The characters are very creative in design, moves very smooth, the effects are stunning and have A LOT of detail.

Best way to sum up Disney and other competitors, Disney is Coke, DreamWorks is Pepsi and the others are failed imitations. Also, I was tempted to shout "LOTERÍA!" when those knights were shouting their virtues. Also, Kaleigh's singing voice, funny enough, wasn't by a British person but by Andrea Corr, lead singer of The Corrs and Irish, not British, where the film sets place.

Comparing Disney with Coke is actually pretty good: Both are unhealthy and sugary, both have shaped pop-culture in a way we don't even comprehend, and both are developing a grasp on the world's economy that I'm not ready to support anymore. I'll stay with Frizz Cola.

I could care less for this movie’s plot, but the songs are FANTASTIC

That feel when her own father spent more time with a blind kid than his own daughter. That feel when the main villain waited ten years to enact his plan, his plan that would allow a grown-up Kayley to sneak off and find Excalibur before he could. That feel when there are three comedy relief characters in the movie and not one of them is funny. That feel when Sir Ruber is literally the only evil, off-putting, and ugly thing in the entire movie, but who's backstory is completely omitted for some reason. That feel when Merlin uses no spells to retrieve Excalibur or treat Arthur's wounds. That feel when not even one gosh darn song in the movie was well written or memorable. That feel when Sir Ruber only names one of his minions "Blade beak" for no discernible reason. That feel when Sir Ruber stabs the sword into the stone at a 35 degree angle- which magically transforms into a perfect 90 degree angle. That feel when one of the worst romances between two main characters in an animated film ever.

I realized around four years ago that, if you look at it...this whole film is basically How To Train Your Dragon 2 if it sucked. - Kayley loses her father but keeps her mother. - She comes from a mythical land inspired by Northern European legends. - She gets the help of a dragon and a love interest to fight against a muscular, beefy madman of a warlord and his animal sidekick. - She gets a position in her land's government thanks to her quest.

At least Hiccup still had his father until the end of the movie.

Ruber's metal monsters look pretty cool, they deserve to be in a better movie!

Congratulations for being the only reviewer I know of for restraining themselves from making a Monty Python joke during this. That can't be easy, especially since Eric Idle is in it. Also, fun fact: like the first Descendants film, the songs in this movie were an afterthought, hence why they're so out of place.

To think the original book of this film was way way more adult. Can’t imagine what the screenwriters were like when reading the rape scene of the book.

enyacoladas The novel follows the experiences of Lynette of Arthurian Legend after she saves her sister Leonie from the Red Knight, covering the events of the original legends as a series of flashbacks and vastly expanding Lynette's character.

Was reminded of the Animaniacs hour long episode "Hooray for North Hollywood" and a joke that was self flagellation on Warner brothers animation studio. Namely a flop animated movie that was a horrific amalgamation of Quest for Camelot and Space Jam called "Jamalot"

@@colleen4ever didn't say Space Jam was a flop; though now that I think about it, Jamalot may have also been a jab at the movie musical Camelot, which was also directed by Warner bros failing to recapture the success they saw with the film adaptation of My Fair Lady

I have always loved the lyric "I have a plan, it includes you!" Thanks for including me in your evil plan! I really appreciate it. It's the type of clunky badness that makes me laugh.

Personally, I think this movie would be 200× better by simply taking out the two headed dragon. As far as Ruper goes, he's a flat placeholder villain with crappy motives but I enjoy his portrayal. He has a certain charisma to him that appeals to me.

TBH I personally think nearly all Disney movies would also be waaay better without their comic relief sidekick characters too 😬 The only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head are Lion King & Little Mermaid?

@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 Lion King is because Timon and Pumba actually add to the plot. They move the story forward. And they don't stop the movie for the dumb gags for the most part.

@@midwinterhunt Good point! Ditto for Sebastian, at least, in Little Mermaid.... I struggle to think of any useful story function enacted by the ubiquitous slapstick animal sidekicks in Pocahontas or Moana! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I just had the thought that this would be a great movie to slap the old “fix the underdeveloped romance by making them childhood friends” bandage onto. I admit I’m biased because I’m a sucker for the “childhood friends who were separated growing up and have new and complicated feelings towards each other now that they’ve been reunited” trope, but it could work for this one! What if Kayley and Garett knew each other through her father mentoring him but wound up thrust down different paths after his death? Maybe even Kayley was raised in Camelot, giving them ample opportunity to know each other and have shared memories to bond over when they reunite, but after her father’s death, her mother decided to move them out of the castle because of trauma or wanting to raise Kayley somewhere with less battle training going on or something, so Kayley grew up assuming that Garett stayed in Camelot and must’ve become a great knight and stuff. Having a previous relationship gives Garett more reason to help Kayley than “because the bird likes her?” and gives them some common ground to have actual conversations and bond rather than just shallow bantering.

Ooh!! Ooh, I think I figured something out. Okay, so kayley gets knighted in that white dress, it’s the same dress her mom was helping fit her for at the beginning! It’s probably the only formal gown she owns, since she’s a tomboy and stuff. She probably borrowed her mom’s jewelry for the event. That’s maybe the one thing in the whole movie that’s kinda clever. Aww. She ended up wearing that dumb dress AND being a knight. Isn’t that cute. Assuming I’m not wrong.

I loved "Quest for Camelot" since I was a kid, and I still do enjoy this movie. Nevertheless, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the movie.

Oh this is gonna be soooo good!

I used to love this movie as a kid. I know better now, but I will admit that this little bit of dialogue kinda gets a giggle out of me. Kaylee--Oh, I didn't realize you were... Garrett--What? Tall? Rugged? Handsome? Kaylee--Blind. Garrett--I always forget that one.

Apparently gary oldman was fucking plastered while singing that song

Yay! Finally! Yeaaaah this movie was bad. Side note though, I learned about Sunny and Cher from their appearances on Animaniacs, not Scoobi Doo ;-)

TheSharpestofThorns ___ (Ezekiel) Zeke Hamish Beckley: Indeed (Donald Jay) Don Rickles will always be remembered as Cornwall and of course my Number 1 favourite Toy Story Pixar character Mr Potato Head. He died of a kidney failure and was 90 years old at the time. Still I'm frickin glad the Toy Story 4 movie did a tribute to him at the end of the film.

As a kid I actually thought this was some weird sequel to Disney’s The Sword in the Stone.

Yeah...and this guy is based off, off Mordred...which tbh I don't understand why he isn't:? I Mean Mordred is aside from Lancelot and King Arthur one of the most well-known figures from Arthurian legends and in most movies, adaptations, works that use Arthur he is sure to appear alongside Morgan Le Fey and Guinevere, Lady of the Lake and Merlin. I mean he is one of the most well-known villains too. Why make up a new knight when you already have a villain right there? I mean Mordred being King's Arthur's nephew(by his sister/half-sister-and no he was son of Morgause, not Morgan. Morguase was Arthur's sister but he didn't know that at the time- none the less, but in the movie he could be someone else's son) would have a natural claim for the throne. Being of the royal family. He could think he's entitled to the throne and want to do away with his uncle. I think Morgouse was Pendragon's kid from first marriage even, so that would give Mordred more motivation. He's the son of someone who'd been there first, woman or not he has MORE right to Excalibur and throne. and thus he does the villainous stuff.

This movie is a huge childhood favourite of mine (and how ironic that this video came out on my birthday haha). It's interesting to visit it again now that I'm older, seeing different opinions aside from my biased glorified nostalgia as well as seeing the flawed production history as well.
