@@IcyDiamond From what I can gather, this was originally pitched as a darker/more mature movie. I think it was even meant to be PG-13. And that's how it started production, but WB got squeamish and kept making changes to the script - leading to tons of work getting thrown out and the animators having to undergo crunch time (they only barely made their deadline). To paraphrase Faust; morale was basically nonexistent - everyone was stressed out of their mind and everyone knew the movie was a mess and would tank anyway, meaning all their work would be for naught. All things considered, I'm surprised the movie came out as good as it did.

This is the film that crippled Warner’s confidence in animated films. For their next film, The Iron Giant, they insisted on barely marketing the film in favor of the First Pokémon Film in the effort of chasing trends. While The Iron Giant received near universal acclaim, the English dub of the first Pokémon Film was critically panned for its poor voice acting, the removal of Mewtwo’s origin story, and the poor execution of the film’s anti-conflict message in a franchise dedicated to fighting.

Hey, leaving a piece of feedback here: I just realised that you can pull off dry sarcastic humour pretty well. I have complained a few times that you don't do the angry reviewer schtick really well, but your dry sarcasm hits more often than not, at least in my opinion. Do keep this in mind: you have a pretty good analytical mind and dry humour works well with that, but when you try to play up your emotions for dramatic effects you often end up over-exaggerating them. In some ways, I ironically find the film hilarious due to how much of an identity crisis it has. The movie can't decide if it wants to be a Disney movie knock-off to cash in on their renaissance or a Warner Bros. film at heart, as the movie even throws a lot of Warner Bros. cartoon references, such as the ACME name for the potion, a cameo of Red Hot Riding Hood and the brief Road Runner-like scene during the Dragons' song.

In some ways, it almost comes off as a parody of Disney. The obviously evil villian, the girl who wants more, the similar Disney designs of the two leads, the pop culture referencing and goofy comic reliefs. It might actually be good if it was intentional, but it's just a knock off without much effort. Anastasia did the Disney style a lot better.

New3DSLUIGI364 I mean animated not live action remakes also most not all. Maybe Lion King and Alladin 2 will be better since they are not a remakes and have scripts writen with their separate mediums and/or artstyles in mind "art shifted sequels" are common and have a way better track record than remakes.

No flame retardant is something that cannot catch on fire where as flame retarded is something that should produce fire but doesn't or does so poorly. The phrase was correct English. Retard and retarded are just two words that had established meaning before they became no-no words. If the word inhibited was used to describe people with developmental issues all those years then you would feel the same way about it today.

The only one that gets a free pass is 'The Prayer' because it actually won a best song award, which I guess makes that one instantly immune to criticism while the others deserve to be trashed solely because they're from a bad film. Okay, they're right about 'Ruber' being crap, but come on.

I can't believe you made the same comparison between Kayley and Taran that I did. I mean speaking as someone who likes The Black Cauldron, At least Taran is intentionally like he is to aid in the film's theme in Humility. Like how it's main character is constantly playing himself as some big heroic knight, but in the end accepts that he's no hero, but just an ordinary kid that's just in way over his head, and the scary imagery of the film helps in that regard even if it does limit the film's demographic.

Not that the film as a whole is great, but it is an explanation for that line lol. Also the joke with 'fire retardant dragon' is literally because they can't breathe fire, that's what flame retardant is. Flame retardants are chemicals that are supposed to slow ignition and prevent fires. It isn't a 'retard' slur, it's a real thing in the real world.

Iron Giant or Cats Don't Dance don't need to be remade. They were flops because of poor advertising or circumstances beyond their control (studio problems that made distribution difficult). Films like The Black Cauldron are more ripe for remaking, specifically because they failed so spectacularly despite their promising ideas (The Black Cauldron was going to be a lot darker, before frightened Disney excs forced numerous changes to get it reduced to a PG rating).

Mr. Enter's new avatar: (smiles genuinely) [EVERYBODY LIKED THAT] "I Stand Alone" was relatable to me too, Mr. Enter, but oddly enough I related to "If I Didn't Have You" a bit--I had three little sisters growing up XD I can kinda understand the hate, but for me it's a guilty pleasure. Ruber's song is just irredeemable though. Truly Ruber's worst crime was subjecting us to it. Also, I probably only liked Bladebeak because he was a chicken. I like chickens.

Omg one of my animation teachers worked on that film! He animated Garret and did some animation for the villain too. When I asked him about it, he was surprised that I even knew about the film. He even showed me the character rotation sheet he had for Garret, it was pretty cool! We talked about the film for a while, he had no idea the film was based off of a book. When he asked about how I knew about the film, I told I had it on a double sided dvd where "Quest for Camelot" was on one side and "Cats Don't Dance" was one the other. He said how dare they put the film next to a masterpiece like "Cats Don't Dance."

Seeing Enter shed his hat and coat to make way for a new, more true-to-life avatar of himself is like one of those movies where the shy nerdy girl lets her hair down and ditches her frumpy sweater and glasses to show how confident she's become, but with less misogyny.

When he sings “I’ve seen your world with these very eyes” you have to remember that he wasn’t always blind. What he’s saying is that when he could see and wasn’t a hermit he had experienced the world she lived in and his loss of sight also acts as a symbolic severing of his connection to society.

  • @michaelsinger4638

15:46 The name 'Ruber' appears to be derived from 'Ruby', and this might be because he's this movie's version of The Red Knight, a character who frequently appears in the Arthurian legend as an antagonist either to Sir Gareth or Sir Percival, depending on the version. Considering that the original novel is a retelling of The Tale of Sir Gareth from Thomas Mallory's Le Morte D'Arthur, this wouldn't surprise me.
