Each album has a different style, the first album is the most Kyuss like. This album has the radio linking each song for a reason and this album mixed radio friendly tracks with some darker heavier tracks providing more shades. Homme clearly likes pop and flirts with it a lot and his vocal delivery adds something very different to most rock of the era. However they often get pretty dark and experimental around it. They're albums are stronger than the sum of their parts. I feel Go with the flow acts as a good palate cleanser on the album and in general their popier numbers balance out their darker grinding numbers which keeps their albums interesting.

QOTSA’s second and third albums are unique because you have three singers sharing responsibility. Josh has the most poppy, alternative approach. Appreciate the honest reaction, guys. And I think, in your criticism, you've actually pretty accurately described what the album and the song are about. This is very deliberately their radio-friendly album. And for a lot of people, it was their intro to stonerrock. (Although there are other songs on it that go way deeper into stonerrock space, you've just listened to the two main singles) The song itself mentions how the lack of friction in his relationship irks the storyteller. And it kinda echoes that, musically. This album and song are a great introduction to QotSA to drag people in from the poppy-er side of rock... For people who already heard and liked Kyuss, not so much...

I think it's best that they listen to a variety of songs, including their "radio songs." Helps to give a full picture. I don't think it's fair to say this song isn't what Queens of the Stone Age is about. I doubt they wrote it just to be popular. They have better and heavier songs, as I've seen people mention, and I like a lot of their songs more than this one, but I don't see why people shouldn't recommend one of their most popular songs to these guys. If you didn't grow up listening to rock, then you suddenly get into metal and its sub-genres, I can see why a song like this would be off-putting. Maybe Ryan and George will ease more into pop stuff over time. It's interesting to see how they react to different genres and styles.

@@RiddlyTK I don't know where they got the idea that bands (at least not bands with any integrity) sit down to write commercially attractive songs, that's something pop and hip-hop (mostly) artists do. My point was the only two songs that they've done, that everyone is pushing for the hardest, are two of their most radio friendly light songs that really aren't terribly interesting. I like No One Knows, but it's pretty much the same kind of song as this was.

@@SeditiousJerk Agree to disagree on No One Knows, I love that song. I think on a channel like this, B sides are going to get a bit less love simply because they're less popular. They go by what people recommend. Though it's good to see a lot of people pushing for Song for the Dead, so hopefully that one's next.

@@RiddlyTK I like that song too and I appreciate your opinion, I'm not even sure we really disagree with each other to be honest. I just think A Song for the Dead is a much more interesting song altogether and it's definitely not a B side. I doubt they're going to revisit them anytime soon based on their last two reactions.

A couple of my friends who liked Black Sabbath listened to this QOTSA song first and thought the band was gonna be mid. But when they listened to the full album, it opened their eyes to how well each song (even the radio friendly songs) flow together. It makes you appreciate everything QOTSA has to offer.

I think that if you want to get into stoner rock more, Dragonaut by Sleep is great. Also Iron Swan, Freya, and Cloak of Feathers by The Sword are great. The Sword is one of the best stoner rock/metal bands out there and their sound is crunchy, dirty, and fuzzy while still being audible and having some fidelity to it.

QOTSA have such a deep and diverse back catalogue, their music just gets under your skin and gets better with each listen. Please react to more of their songs, they have plenty of darker stuff! Song for the deaf (not to be confused with song for the dead) is a deep cut and probably one of the darkest songs they have done! Their albums all feel different while still sounding distinctly QOTSA.

I understand you guys grabbing the most suggested songs. But of course it would result in more popular songs. From this album Songfor the Deaf (title song) and Song for the Dead are truly masterpieces. But their best song is You can't Quit Me Baby, from their first album wich sounds a lot more (naturally) like Kyuss.

I wrote this huge long response to what people are saying and how you all reacted to this but I will make it way more short instead...Kyuss is NOT QOTSA. Everyone complaining about this song and asking for "Song for the Dead" are looking for Kyuss, not QOTSA, mostly because you liked Kyuss previously. Songs like this, and "3's and 7's" and "No One Knows" propelled their sound to influence a difference that you can see all the way up to even their latest album "Villians". If you like Kyuss, listen to some Kyuss albums. If you like QOTSA, listen to their stuff. But most everyone saying that "Song of the Dead" is the QOTSA sound, hasn't listened to "Villians" or the 3 albums before that even. Sometimes LiV...your YT Commenter's are full of shit.

If you don't like Josh's voice then you're probably not gonna like almost all QOTSA songs. Yes, this was one of the "hits" but all of their songs feature the counterpoint between his voice & the heaviness of the music. My favorites: The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret, Better Living Through Chemistry, You Think I Ain't Worth a $ ... (Oliveri vocals), Song For The Dead & Hanging Tree (Lanegan vocals), My God is The Sun, I Sat by The Ocean, Smooth Sailing 🤘

Yeah, they are not gonna like any QOTSA. This style is not for them. They don't get that the counterpoint with the 'light' vocals is the point... there's enough music with the 'proper' kind of vocals over riffs. QOTS brought something fresh to the table with their interpretation of rock music. I often find them heavier that a lot of other heavy, more distorted, downtuned and growly offerings. It is what it is with the LIV peeps. After years of following I finally understand their narrow music tastes and know before I press play if they'll like it or not.

Missed opportunity with this band. I rarely comment but damn! Those two songs you reacted, in the context of the album, make a whole lot more sense. Now they’re stuck with the false interpretation of them being a pop band for chicks. Sometimes you cant go with the most popular picks. Hope you two give them another chance. They have two other lead singers on this album as well.

Sorry Ryan, but this is one where you're way off. You might have to be a musician to truly appreciate the high level musicianship going on in this song. And also, this is more masculine than feminine, although there are elements of both. Not everyone has the kind of ear for quality art at this level though.

QOTSA albums have a theme in my opinion. This album is based on listening to FM/AM radio while driving/on a road trip and going through the “dial” and picking up all different stations and different music. You sort of miss the concept not listening to the whole album as a single piece. In my opinion, that’s really all of QOTSA albums.

Writing easy melodies is probably something of the hardest things to do. Being able to write catchy rythm sections which are locked into your mind, not something that comes easy, and its much easier to write heavy stuff, even if you might think otherwise. Being able to create something catchy and also cool at the same time is not an easy feat to achieve. Dave grohl once said when he started to write ✍️ music for the foos he realised that what kurt cobain did in nirvana was something really hard to achieve being able to write song after song with catchy melodies. Thats why people like john Lennon and kurt Cobain and many many more will stay in touch with the future because they achieved something that every generation can listen too. It wont die out... As its just impossible there will always be teens which are moody and need something to listen to either get inspired or let their frustrations out. I for example love this song from qotsa as its a great example of them being able to write good songs which stick to the audience. And being able to gravitate towards every group of people not just one type of listener. That's what makes a great band being able to write something that you wanna write but still being able to appease most without even wanting too. And im a male and love this song. Just because you are a guy doesn't mean you have to enjoy metal smashing sounds! We love females right and they are the softer ones supposedly, so what's that then. Am i wrong for loving the female body. Or am i weird. Im pretty sure that you like a beautiful woman too. Or am i wrong! You prefer watching metal grinding against metal! Im pretty sure if i presented a beautiful woman Infront of you, your knees would get weak. Well that's the beauty. The difference between everyone, and being able to appreciate the beauty within something like this. Which a male can write for the females supposedly! Although i know some females that can kick ass better than me. They would literally bite by private part off! If they wanted too not that I would ever let that happen.
