Queen Wilhelmina 1890-1948 A life in pictures

Wilhelmina (Dutch pronunciation: [ʋɪlɦɛlˈminaː] (About this soundlisten); Wilhelmina Helena Pauline Maria; 31 August 1880 - 28 November 1962) was Queen of the Netherlands from 1890 until her abdication in 1948. She reigned for nearly 58 years, longer than any other Dutch monarch. Her reign saw the First and the Second world wars, the Dutch economic crisis of 1933, and the decline of the Netherlands as a major colonial power.
Wilhelmina was the only child of King William III and his second wife, Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont. On William's death in 1890, she ascended to the throne at the age of ten under the regency of her mother. In 1901, she married Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, with whom she had a daughter, Juliana. Wilhelmina was generally credited with maintaining Dutch neutrality during the First World War.[1]
Following the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, Wilhelmina fled to Britain and took charge of the Dutch government-in-exile. She frequently spoke to the Dutch people over radio and came to be regarded as a symbol of the Dutch resistance.[1] She returned to the Netherlands following its liberation in 1945.
Increasingly beset by poor health after the war, Wilhelmina abdicated in September 1948 in favour of Juliana. She retired to Het Loo Palace, where she died in 1962.

Queen Wilhelmina was the queen of my grandparents. They learned her name in volkschool, and they stil felt the queen in office in 1949.It is very difficult for them to understand that her daughter, Juliana, reigned since 1948.For them Holland is identic with Queen Wilhelmina.

A documentation of the mother of cowardness. Fleeing to safety in England after only a few days of war while her soldiers were still dying for her on the Grebbeberg. Shame on her

She did not want to leave the Netherlands and had to be practically carried out. The Dutch Government said that she would serve the country better by leaving and being a rallying point for the people. She very reluctantly agreed to go and broadcast to the nation giving words of encouragement. There was nothing cowardly in her actions.

@@Dunsapie Rubish How do you know all this are you an expert in Dutch history or in the royal family? Do you have the direct briefings from the Dutch Government? Or are you an easy believer of propaganda A coward woman who abandoned her people together with her SS son in law bernard. In the first decades after the war their real roles could not be exposed. Censorhip is what that is called. Nowadays historians enlighten the cowardness of wilhelmina and her corrupt family.

@@timvanbeek6452 Hear hear Tim, you are so right about this! Her escape was prepared for months. She called herself the "mother of the fatherland" well with such a mother you don't need enemies. The kind of mother who leaves a burning house with her children in it. When in London she gave her criminal son in law a tittle; leader of the domestic armed forces so that he, who didn't do a thing in the war, would be in every first jeep when liberation came. So that the people would think; Orange is coming to liberate us. All a big lie of course! Like everything with that family!

Funny, thougts crossed my mind about the movie the Manchurian candidate. The hero comes home as a real hero with lots of medals an admiration from everyone but afterwards more and people start wondering why on earth the hero got all this medals. Was he really the hero he so desperately wants to be. Where his actions in war heroïc? The same with wilhelmina and her ss son in law. Where there witnesses that she was "practicaly carried out"? The ss prince. Was there anyone witness of his brave actions in the war? Are or where there really people that can tell about the brave actions of this Manchurian couple? No of course not. And stiill they both "deserved" de Willemsorde, the highest military medal for galantry.
