Queen Latifah is from Newark, NJ aka Brick City💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾 She also lived in East Orange, NJ. The guy who grabbed her ass is Vinnie aka Vin Rock from Naughty by Nature. They all were tight... I think she actually named their group!! Edit: The key around her neck in the video is a tribute to her brother who passed in a motorcycle accident.

This sampled “a message from the inner city” by the crusaders. The motorcycle was a tribute to her brother Lancelot Owens, who died in a motorcycle accident. She’s wearing his motorcycle key as a necklace. She was also on a sitcom "Living Single" and was often seen wearing it on the show as well. Latifah can also sing her ass off. A lot of her choruses showcase her singing skills. She also has 2 albums that are just her singing. On those 2 albums, she did jazz styled cover songs Shes from new jersey. The line “like yo-yo, you don’t hear me though” is a reference to yo-yo’s song “black pearl”. Yo-yo was on brandy’s “i wanna be down” remix with latifah.

The key she caught in the beginning of the video was the key to her brothers motorcycle that she bought as a gift for him. He died in a motorcycle accident. Latifah is a part of a collective called NATIVE TONGUES...that includes A TRIBE CALLED QUEST and DE LA SOUL among others. I think you should to react to B.U.D.D.Y by all the members of NATIVE TONGUES to introduce yourself to all those groups. I think you'll like DE LA SOUL.

Omg! De La Soul's "Me, myself and I" was on heavy rotation for like 3 years or something. That song was everything to me, cuz it got me in that dance mood. And I like the message too. I ran into one of them in n.y. one day. I smiled, but he gave me that thanks but keeping low key right now, look...so, as any typical New Yorker would do, I kept it moving and respected his privacy. I ran into a different rapper as he was leaving a building and heading for his car. The face escapes me, so now I can't remember which rapper from back in the day, it was. I used to briefly work with my uncle's then wife (R.I.P.) in this cosmetics ad office, which was in the same building MTV used to be in before they moved to Time Square. Carnegie hall and the first Planet Hollywood was just a few blocks away from my office building. Those were exciting times. Lol

Late 80's through mid 90's is also known at the "Golden Era" of Hip Hop. She's from Newark, N.J. just like Lauryn Hill. And like, but BEFORE Lauryn, Queen can sing and sang her own hooks. I know this is an older post but hope you've reviewed "Ladies First" (featuring fierce U.K. MC Monie Love; in the video were also all the big female MC's at the time; the song is from her All Hail the Queen album circa '87. She was also part of larger crew call Native Tongues made up of the Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep (check The Choice Is Yours, a hip hop classic), A Tribe Called Quest (Q-Tip was an original MC; whose catalogue you must peep especially the Midnight Marauders album that came out same time as UNITY), De La Soul (also stellar and soon-to-be-free catalogue; Buhloon Mindstate, their incredible album also same time at UNITY), and Leaders of the New School featuring then a little known MC name Busta Rhymes who was the talk of group. Also: that horn was also on a track--a banger--y Pete Rock n C.L. Smooth called When They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)--name for Trouble T-Roy, an MC and Dancer affiliated with Heavy D who had just passed. Queen was reference and paying homage here, to T-Roy and to her brother who had just been killed an accident too. FYI.

I have been requesting some of the Queen. Queen Latifah was the first concert I ever went to and I was definitely not old enough to be in there but I enjoyed it. Can you do Fly Girl by QL?

A female MC today who reminds me of this era is Rapsody. Check out some of her stuff on the channel. She has a song with J. Cole called, "Sojourner." Her newest single is called, "12 Problems."
