I never thought it was gay or campish at all. It was just Queen. Then in the early 80's the gay word became more of a label in conversation. Changed the connotation of my favourite ice block "Gaytime". I didn't even know until the early 80's that Freddie was gay or bisexual. Didn't care either. Then AIDs became a worldwide word. Remember this is before computers. We were taught about it in high school. I love the name Queen. Imagine if Brian and Rodger insisted they kept the name Smile?

This is probably Brian May's masterpiece. He wrote a great tune and really shines on guitar. Freddie, of course, takes it to astonishing heights with his godly vocal delivery. Great harmonies from the guys, as well. I love it!

And considering I have listened to this album since the early nineties when I was a kid that's a long time.

As a life-long Queen fan, this feels like the one song that gives us all four guys completely loving what they do. Roger and Brian not just hitting it hard, but really meaning it. Deacon absolutely smashing the bass and Freddie, more than ever, singing beyond perfection to bring us absolute heaven.

Roger’s drumming is so heavy. Brian’s guitar playing, too.

One thing I love about Queen is that all four members have their own musical style so you get a nice mix of Roger's hard rock, John's funk, Brian's catchy melodic pieces and Freddie's experimental stuff. I love songs from each of the members. While I'd say '39 is my favourite Brian May song, It's Late is a close second.

The first time I heard this track, I was blown away by the drumming of Roger. He is so underrated as a drummer. He ranks up there with the great ones. Sure he's no Ginger Baker, Neil Peart, John Bonham, and Keith Moon, but damn he's fantastic. Now about the lyrics, Brian really hit the nail on the head with this one. One of his hidden masterpieces with the band. John Deacon is also a fantastic bassist. He really accents the song with his playing and meshing perfectly with Roger. Finally, we get to Freddie's vocals. What more can one person say that hasn't already been said all over the world. I miss hearing his voice with new material every day. He is sadly missed by me, just like all of the past musicians I have listened to over the past 46 years. God Save The Queen......

💯💜👏🎤🎶🎹🎸💯 Freddie was absolutely correct when he said they would never split ! " Why kill the goose that laid the golden egg " ? These 4 gentleman brought more joy to so many people , spanning over 4 generations , and easily going into 5 , I know my parents had all of their records and quite possibly even 8 tracks , I owned all of their cassettes , records , tapes and CD's , and my children and their children too now own all of their music , either on their phones or their mp3 players or their IPods , and I thoroughly believe that my grand children's children will also be listening to them long after this ol' bird is dead and gone!! As all of us die hard Queen and Freddie fans are probably hoping for as we dance around our houses cleaning , with our grand children following , helping us do " the 10 second tidy " , singing along with the greatest boy band history will never forget!! 💚💚

This song (and the entire "News of the World" album) has such a special place in my choices of favorite songs. I would like to point out what Brian May does in his guitar solo. He uses finger-tapping. Eddie Van Halen is widely credited as the first to use this technique in rock music. Van Halen's debut album was release in 1978. "News of the World" was released in 1977.

Brian May credited seeing legendary Dallas guitarist Rocky Athas in performance at a bar called Mother Blues with inspiring him to learn this tapping technique.

In the early 90's my aunt asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I replied "any Queen album". She got me "News of the World" and my life was irrevocably changed. If it had been a vinyl copy, I would've worn it out. Fortunately, it was a CD. This song is my favorite and needs no attribution or supplement. This song is beautiful in every possible way. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Queen.

The most phenomenal vocals in music imo. Freddie could do that gritty, raspy sound, he could do more smooth, soft pop kind of vocals, he could do opera. He could make his vocal cords do gymnastics like nobody else. He is my favorite by far and I absolutely love him.

Splendid work of John with his constants bass breaks.....He attacks the drammatic line of the song permanentely....

My absolute favorite Queen Song. Love them all but this song does it for me. Way Underrated and no airplay. Epic Masterpiece.

I have never heard this played on radio, even rock radio stations. They just play a few of their songs these days. When they were active with Freddie, they got lots of airplay in the UK, so its only fair that the current music artists get their chance to make it big. I hear some decent new rock too, not in Queens class, but still good. But the song is pure class. I love it.

his vocal is just mind blowing. i can really relate to his emotions to this song.

This one is definitely one of my favourite “less popular” Queen Songs.

Its beautiful and Freddie's voice adds another dimension 1:45 there's something about when he says "hmm yea" that's emotional.

The power in rogers drums with deacons bass throbbing is really shocking !!

Elon Musk should set aside his Mars goal and build a time machine so I can return to 1977 and see Queen live once again, my first concert.

Unfortunately this album is so overlooked because it has the two hits that literally everyone knows (We will Rock you and We are the Champions). Because everyone was too busy listening to those , they dismissed the rest of the masterpiece that is The News Of The World . They all missed out on absolute gems like this

I dunno, this was a monster album when it came out. Not every song was a popular "hit" but everyone knew all the songs. I haven't listened to melancholy blues in 30 years and still know most of the lyrics. One of my all time favs to sing is from another, Lazing on a sunday, a night at the opera. I had a cousin come over from the UK and he brought it....first time I ever heard anything like Queen and was hooked.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression this was over looked because the British press saw the album as a desperate attempt to be like more like a punk band? It's a tie between this, The Game and their Debut for my fave queen album if I'm honest, each album just seems to be at the pinnacle of its style.

This is legit my favourite Queen song. Right up there as one of the greatest rock songs of all time in my opinion.

the greatest song by an iconic band that few people have ever heard. maybe the best showcase of Freddie's talent that further demonstrates how great a frontman he was as this song wasn't written by him. God, how blessed is May to have had this demigod voice one of his best compositions? this song will get used in some great scene in some great film someday and it will be everywhere. lets hope so.

Queen and Freddie forever! Their talent is just beyond belief.

Actually I tried it by naming Bohemian Rhapsody my favorite song. But hell, it is heavily challenged almost every day. Don't know how long it will survive there. And 'It's Late" is a VERY serious contender. :-)

My favorite Queen song, bar none. Everything the band does best is on full display here, turned up to 11, and it soars. Back in the day, I bet this would've been quite the thing to hear live.

Brian's riff and Fred's voice are crushing And see, I love WWRY and Champions, but they are just the shadow of Spread your Wings and this masterpiece. Top

There are so many phenomenal songs by Queen that have never gotten the recognition they deserve and this is just one of many.

3:00am listening to Queen on a work night “IT’S LATE, IT’S LATE, IT’S LATE BUT NOT TOO LATE!” Lol!!!! Because I can’t stop my obsession with Queen. And that is not a bad thing!! And that picture of Deaky with Goofy is so cute!!!! I’m the only comment for 2 years! How is this possible? Lol.

Yes, and I absolutely love Dragon Attack too. They have a lot of great songs that never went mainstream, but the same can be said about Bob Marley, and many other greats.

@@SelectCircle Yes, KZread recommended some of Kate Bush's songs to me. I really like "Wuthering Heights", "Cloudbusting" and "Running up that hill" which are among her greatest hits, I guess, but I didn't get in much deeper. Thanks for the recommendation, anyway!

I went "off" Queen when 1978's "Jazz" came out, but "News of the World" 1977 was their last album I bought Co-incided with when I left High school to start work, so, a VERY significant time span for me (Album collector) By 1979 I was declaring to everyone I knew that "It's Late" was singlehandedly THE finest track Queen EVER recorded It's now Jan' 2024 and nearly five decades later, my opinion hasn't changed one jot, not even one iota If you'll excuse the untended pun , such "MAGIC"

One of their most underrated songs, absolutely love it, and the entire News of the World album. It might just be my favorite Queen record. What an incredible band.

I'm not a huge fan of the movie 'Observe and Report,' but at least I can thank that film for introducing me to this TERRIFIC song -- or, at least RE-introducing me to it. No doubt I'd heard it back in the day once or twice, but had long forgotten it. Some tunes on 'News of the World' tend to get buried underneath the weight of the megahits that are the first two tracks. Anyway...this song KICKS it.

This song is one of the best answers to anyone who criticizes Queen for being too commercial

I think it's because Bohemian Rhapsody, The Prophet's song and Long away are above it for me. So it's "only" on place four. xD But never mind, that changes constantly anyway - mostly, my favourite Queen-song is the one I'm just listening too. I feel like there are at least 20-30 songs which would deserve to be Nr. 1 in their own right. Update one month later: It's number three now. :-)

Ive seen critics say that the only good songs on this album were We will Rock You and We are the Champions. Please! THIS Song is WAY cooler and rockin than those bigger hits.

After literally decades of dithering, I’ve finally come to the conclusion that this might be my favourite Queen track.

Queen possessed all the best quality of music we are looking. Can't find something to dislike. Each day I'm falling in love with their songs.

Adding this to the list of underrated Queen songs. We've got, It's Late, My Melancholy Blues, Dead On Time, The Prophet's Song, The Millionaire Waltz, One Year Of Love, The March Of The Black Queen, Sleeping On The Sidewalk, Let Me Entertain You, Gimme The Prize, Who Needs You? People seem to forget or not realise this song was written by Brian May in both lyric and musically..Freddie delivers a brilliant vocal.

Queen are many things, but underrated is not one of them. Especially not this album. This is the one that broke the US market.

The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Queen..... and I could live without any other music.
