My grandma, who is only one year younger that Queen Elizabeth, actually saw her when she was on this tour! I wonder if my grandma might have actually be somewhere in the crowds on this video! My grandma says she was amazed when she saw the Queen and it hit her how young the Queen was - as young as my grandmother herself. Crazy to think about. My grandma is now 95.

As a former Sri Lankan living in the U.S. since 1984, this video brings back fond memories of the Queen's visit to Ceylon in 1954. I was 16 years old and remember seeing the Queen and Prince Philip on their way to St. Michael's Church, Colpetty on a Sunday morning. My wife and I last visited Sri Lanka in 2019 just before the pandemic hit. It is sad to see what has become of this beautiful Island since the departure of the British. I can only hope and pray that sanity and peace will prevail among all races and religions, as President Wickremesinghe works to bring the country together.

Great story and sorry to point it out but how can someone be a "former" Sri Lankan? Once a Sri Lankan always a Sri Lankan, or did you just forget your roots or something after moving to a foreign country? If you were born in Sri Lanka and was brought up in the motherland it would honestly irritate me to know that you consider yourself as a "former" Sri Lankan just because you moved nations. I was born with a foreign passport yet I consider myself as a proud Sri Lankan.

Many people state that it would have been better if we had british rule cause we didnt have ethnic problems then. But remeber that s because all the sinhalese people were harshly discriminated and only sinhalese who converted to their religion and embraced their culture were given the right to education, jobs, opportunities. Majority of the tamils were also given those opportunities. Those poor sinhala people who had no power or education couldnt fight against this. I believe that the sinhala only act gave the opportunity for the sinhlese. But tamil also should have included as an official language cause they also our people. People are so delusional, that they cant see british actually destroyed our country by divide and conquer policy and looting our resources . They built are all those roads, railways for their benifit not for the people.

I admire the lady and the way she handled her job, but I object to the statement that Britain protected Ceylon for 150 years. It exploited the resources to the hilt and caused problems by bringing the whole island together under one administration in 1833 when until then the Tamil kingdom in Jaffna was administered as a separate territory from India. (As was the case with Portuguese and Dutch). This is the cause of the racial problems that ensued as the representations of the Tamils in parliament was not enough to have any consequence.

  • @HLANGL

"... until then the Tamil kingdom in Jaffna was administered as a separate territory from India ...": The kingdom of Jaffna appeared only in the 13th century AD, until then there had not been such an entity in the north. It continued to operate as a separate regional kingdom until it was captured by Portuguese in the early 17th century. This regional kingdom had been ruled by the Tamil dynasty "Aryacakravarti"/"Aryachakravarthi" which happened to cease/end with the execution of its last ruler/king Cankili II by Portuguese after defeating him and capturing the kingdom. This "Aryacakravarti"/"Aryachakravarthi" dynasty obviously had its origins in India, true, may have had some strong links with them during the subsequent few centuries (13th century AD - 17th century AD) too, still the fact that "The Tamil kingdom in Jaffna was administered as a separate territory from India ...." is incorrect and it's nothing but a misinterpretation of historical facts .... As far as the late Queen Elizabeth ii is concerned, there's no argument whatsoever regarding the fact that she seems to have had been truly a remarkable person from the outset, and led truly an exemplary life throughout until her very demise. Even just the fact that how she held her nerve amidst all the turbulence within the British royal family itself during the past several decades to see that it got through to its present day situation conveys what a remarkable human being she had been. RIP ....

John The first Arya chakravarti was Vijaya Koolangai Sinhai Arya Magan in 1240 whom the Sinhalese call Magha. 14 descendants later, Sepumalkumaraya ( the son of an Indian Tamil adopted by the king, whose Tamil name was Chemoaha Perumal) was sent on a surprise attack against a peaceful king in about 1447ce. The hope was that he would be killed in battle and he would not then become the heir to the Kotte throne. He ruled in Jaffna for 14 years and is known to have built many Hindu temples. Pararajasekeram returned with an army of mercenaries and expelled Sepumal Kumaraya. He returned to Kotte and took over the throne on the death of Parakramabahu IV and took on the name Bhuvanekabahu Bahu VI. Your narrative is interspersed with facts out of chronological order. The fact remains that the Sinhalese and the Tamils are now fighting over irrelevant matters. We should stop this. My dispute is with the British, not my fellow countrymen.

The biggest reason behind British captuer Sri Lanka was the inner fights. Sri Lanka was not an easy country to defeat. If you read the Histroy in the country, you can see it. The way I see, From Portuguese to Dutch to British, It was never easy. The Country had Strong kings and even the forest protect the last kingdom of Kandy in Sri Lanka. But in the End British manage to captoer the King. How? They use the inner drama in the country to win the war. The way i read, The Senhalees people who live back then hate the Nayakkar King Sri Wikrama rajasingha. Okey I understand that. No one want a man from another country to rule thire country. But to settle the issue, What they di was stupid. They ask the help Of British. Meanwhile British was looking away to finger the matters in the country. and they finaly had the chance. and to worse the situation. One of the sinhalees high ranking person show the place the King was hiding to the british. They thought that if the British take away the King, one of them can be the King. But that was whare they got wrong. British never give the country back to the people. And that was when Sri Lanka finaly lost. I heard they had a history more than 5000 years of brave skillfull kings to queens. But what they did with the British was Stupid i think. Well This is a big lesson to anyone. Always remember. if you have a problem try to slove it by your self. this reminds me the way Magadha over power Licchavi in India. Not the same story. But kinda. I hope Sri lankens learn a lesson from the Histroy. Never let another country to invole in bigger matters in yours.

@@samithufernando Its not. Im from Vietnam, a former french colony. But.. Colonialism in Sri Lanka was drastically different from anywhere else. The British that ruled sri lanka did care about the country, a lot. Sri Lanka had reached self governing far before the independence in 1948, most of the top ministers were Sri Lankan. The goverment was structured not only for the benefit of britain but genuince servitude towards the Sri Lankan people. Britain is solely responsible to booming the Sri Lankan population from 400,000 to 5 million within mere decades. They undertook some of the largest infrastructure projects in its history. The best universities and schools in the country were built by Britain. They built hundreds of schools and dozens of hospitals scattered all across the country serving rich and poor alike. Plus due to being a british protectorate, not once in that century did they face the threat of an invasion.

@@WilliamLi-nd4lz I'm from Sri Lanka. British took our independence in 1815, after the Kingdom of Kandy got defeated. Europeans (Portuguese, Dutch, English) had started ruling coastal areas of our country from 1505. But none of them were able to threaten the independence of the country. After the British lost the first Kandyan war of 1803, Thomas Maitland was appointed the governor. Who used John D'Oyly to strategically gain control over the Kingdom of Kandy. He learned the Sinhala language, and using various tactics was able to gain the favor of the nobility. He also used spies to obtain confidential information. Using the tensions between the king and the nobility to their advantage, the British conquered the entire island in 1815. Sri Vikarama Rajasinghe, the last king of the country is often shown as a villain. Many things that he did, including using capital punishment, which might now seem quite uncivilized due to our current societal standards, were part of the royal law based on traditions. At that time the king was distanced from the commoners, and the British were successfully able to convince the public that the king is a villain, and the British were the saviors. Since the British took over the country with the help of the nobility, both parties signed the Kandyan convention. But the British did not follow the convention properly, which caused rebellions in 1818 and in 1848 due to oppression and unfair taxes. I would highly suggest you read regarding these rebellions to understand how oppressively the British controlled the country. Do not ever come to the assumption that any of the colonizers did anything to their colony because of their love for its people. Tell me one thing they did like that. It is always for their benefit. Also, the population of Sri Lanka was 1.33 million in 1815 and 7.59 million in 1948. This data is from OurWorldinData. British did not boom the population; it was simply a matter of time. Please understand that nobody wants to do anything for free. They all need something in return. Don't think that the largest empire in history conquered parts of the world to 'protect them.' The country was impoverished when they left it. The impacts of colonialism still reverberate. Colonialism was directly or indirectly responsible for almost every problem in the country. The cruelty of colonialism outweighs any advantages of it. I suggest you read more about the actions of the British in our country. Thank you

It developed significantly after indpeendence, its economy boomed and tons of infrastructure was developed. Achieved significantly low poverty, achievd 100% basic sanitation, electricity, and clean water for all citizens. But you are right, Unlike Indians, Sri Lankans actually had a deep love for the crown. There were a significant amount of people that wanted the brits to stay after the independence.
