What Henry wanted (or at least professsed publicly) was an acknowledgment that the marriage to Catherine of Aragon was invalid, due to her prior marriage to his brother. A divorce would still acknowledge the marriage had occurred. Once the Church of England was established, he had his marriage to Catherine *annulled*, indicating it never happened. He even ordered that Catherine be addressed as Dowager Princess of Wales, in acknowledgment of her prior marriage to his deceased elder brother. The eventual Mary I also had her status as Princess removed to indicate that she was born in an illegal marriage. Interestingly, people don’t talk about how, in addition to the two so-called “divorced” wives, he also annulled his respective marriages to Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard before each was executed. So, in legal terms, from his perspective, he had only two wives: his “beloved” Jane Seymour, who gave him a son, and Catherine Parr.

I mean, your whole existence is due to your father marrying his dead brother's wife and divorcing her, so why not continue the tradition? Isabella of Castile, Duchess of York Constance of Castile. So much is made of the brother John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and Edmund of Langley the Duke of York. In an alliance with Spain (Castile) the two brother married sisters Constance and Isabella. One of my fave Queen Elizabeth I quotes is "I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman but I have the heart and stomach of a king" Love it. Also did you know she had a weird rule about purple clothing. During the reign the dye used to make purple clothes was very expensive so she made a rule whereby only those of certain ranks of nobility and royalty could wear purple and those of whom she considered a lower rank were fined if they were seen wearing purple. That is how Purple came to be associated with royalty and nobility even after it became more affordable and widely available.

Blame that (History not talking about the spilled tea and hot gossip) on your cheap @$$ communities allowing politicians and corporations to sponsor and funding the education system. The education system of the past taught only what the community wanted and the community made sure of that through sponsoring and funding their local schools to keep the education system under the power of the communities the schools are in. Once the communities focus more on selfish spending on stupid cars, trucks and boats... focusing more on superficial BS... leaving schools at the mercy of corporations and politicians, thus subjects like Science, Social Studies, Arts, ,etc became boring and more focus on State Core Standards and passing the test, thus teachers are forced to teach based on corporate made tests and follow political BS lessons. You want school to be fun again/.... stop spending your money on stupid sh!T!!!! Use that extra income to support programs you actually want to see in schools, and if you get more families to join you, you and your community would free teachers and staff members of the education system from corporate and political tyranny, thus future students will have awesome and interesting subjects and lessons. Unfortunately, selfish retards will continue to spend money on superficial BS rather than support local schools who are at the mercy of being relevant due to lack of funds and sponsorship that would provide the supplies, textbooks, documentaries and other needed things to support good programs people actually want.

God I'd love an episode on the husbands of the queens regnant of England (Geoffrey of Anjou, Guildford Dudley, Philip of Spain, William III, George of Denmark, Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Prince Philip). Their positions and stories are all so varied (two teenage grooms who never quite made it two the throne, two kings in their own right who both invaded England with varying degrees of success, and three princes who made peace with taking a backseat to their wives in politics but maintained control in the home) and it's an interesting way of tracking the development of female monarchical power.

Robert Dudley was without a doubt Elizabeth I's greatest love. Sadly, marrying him would mean repeating her older half-sister Mary I's mistake. I can only imagine how lonely she was. It was the price she had to pay to become a great ruler who would pave the way for the British Empire.

How tall was Elizabeth? In her portraits she always appears tall and so regal, almost an ethereal look. It would have been amazing to see her in person. Definitely one of the most remarkable women in history.

@@murph8837 How can you say QE II did not have courage or grace!!! And while she knew how to be a strong ruler, she also knew when to display goodwill or kindness. She was very much loved by her people, and showing goodwill and kindness in no way lessened the effect of her strength as monarch. She was also not above using feminine wiles to get men to do her bidding. She did, in fact, excel at that. Why do you think she was so successful?

Elizabeth is just like so many women nowadays who vow not to marry and just have kids out of wedlock. because they saw too much wife abuse at home, growing up, and that sort of thing.

To be fair, Elizabeth did likely take part in at least one of the plots to depose Mary. She wasn’t the innocent sheep.

Considering she grew up knowing her father had her mother executed, and later was only a few years younger than Catherine Howard when Henry had her executed as well ... idk, I'm sure Elizabeth enjoyed some courtly flirting and dancing but risking anything that would result in a baby, or getting married to a man who would have absolute power over her, has never sat well with me. People are so obsessed with questioning her Virgin Queen status, but looking at her upbringing I don't doubt it. As a teenager she even saw what happened to a powerful, experienced, highly intelligent woman like Catherine Parr when she was married to violent, cruel men: Henry and later Thomas. Catherine was in love with Thomas and look how he turned out, a creep preying on her niece right in front of her! For all Robert Dudley was charming, Elizabeth probably thought "if we did get married that could change." Especially when those rumors of his murdering his wife surfaced.

I LOVE how you give little 2- second details about other historical figures when you introduce them and I end up watching several other biography videos because of it. Something about your voice allows me to be able to enjoy your videos back to back to back and that's hard to find! Cheers, thx 🙂

Scott Peterson is beyond scum, and I can not see Robert Dudley killing a wife who is almost ready to give birth to his child. I can not even see him as culpable in the death of Amy Robsart. He would have to know that such a questionable death would ruin any chance of marriage with Elizabeth.

Thanks for this. Queen Jane was not immediately executed. She was given several months to recant and was only executed after her father raised another rebellion to depose Mary. Mary came to the throne with an attitude of forgiveness and not wanting bloodshed. The marriage of Mary and Philip- Philip was not King as in he could not make decisions on his own. Mary and parliament had made provision for this. Re: the burnings, Mary only worked within the law of that day and burnings were considered a cleaning of the soul back then. The prisoners were given an opportunity to recant. She didn’t behave any differently to any monarch of her time. Philip didn’t abandoned Mary. He still had several responsibilities overseas on his lands and wars to deal with. It’s sad that Elizabeth didn’t even try to have an heir. It was her sole responsibility to keep the dynasty going and basically ended it

Mary knew full well that Jane was just a pawn and that she had no desire to be Queen. Though she was found guilty her sentence of death was dismissed. Only when the rebellion and the Spanish threatening to call off the marriage did she begrudgingly agree to Jane's execution. I always viewed Mary as a rather tragic figure than a villian.

Mary never wanted to execute Jane as she realized Jane had basically been no more than a helpless pawn. When negotiating her marriage to Philip, the Spanish started complaining about the fact that the individual that had been proposed for the throne (Jane) was still alive, and this apparently constituted a danger to Philip. That was when Jane and Guildeford went to the block.

Philip defended Elizabeth from Mary because he knew that after Elizabeth, it was Mary Queen of Scots in line of succession. Although a Catholic, she was at that time living in France having being betrothed to the heir apparent of King Henry II of France. Philip knew that he wouldn't be siring any children from Mary & Mary was too zealous to foreshadow the consequences of executing Elizabeth at that time. No wonder why Philip is also known as Philip the Prudent. However, Philip farsightedness in protecting Elizabeth was of no avail. A year into Elizabeth's reign, the Italian wars ended leaving Spain in a superior position. The next year, Mary Queen of Scots was widowed & she returned back to Scotland. In 1562 France slided into civil war between Protestants & Catholics. Philip scored a decisive victory against the Turks at Lepanto in 1571 & he inherited Portugal in 1578. All of this & a host of other factors culminated into a drastic reversal by 1588.

Can you do suitors of Queen Victoria of UK she had many suitors including Tsar Alexander II of Russia that she almost married due to them liking each other but their place in society prevent it but wonder if they married then Russia and UK combined two countries.

Elizabeth was a Renaissance Queen, and not a medieval Queen.

I think the most amusing one was The Duke of Anjou. Some of them were just down right insulting.

(also I'll be focusing on albert as he's my great grandpa.) albert was extremely upset,he didn't really know how to deal with this. he was tooken to the boarding school that was in cornwall, he had somewhat of a good time,but hated studying. one night in when 1959,him and his friends sneaked out,he met a fine young girl called clarissa banks. they took things extremely quickly,and within one night,they had done something which changed his life forever. after 2 months of seeing eachother everyday,she found out she was pregnant. this was a shock,albert had only 1 month left of his boarding school and didn't know what to do. clarissa had to hide this from her family but was shocked that this was all happening so suddenly. after 4 months of being pregnant,she told her family and they said they had to either get married or they would disown her. clarissa wanted to get married but albert didn't. clarissa grew up in an abusive household where her step father sa'd her and ra**d. her. she decided it wasn't worth it and ran away,she was disowned shortly after. together. albert went to london with clarissa and the 2 told his parents. they were furious and wanted nothing to do with him,but marigold,his favourite aunt(diana canterbury)and his half siblings wanted to help. he moved in with his eldest sister,maria. his closest sibling. at the time,maria was 23 and married to a 25 year old lawyer named robert anderson. they had 2 kids,a 2 year old boy named alexander and a new born boy called samuel. robert was skeptical of helping albert and clarissa but was convinced by his wife to help. they had their baby,a girl who they named elisabeth,a mix of elizabeth the queen mother and elisa,albert's mother. the queen mother met elisabeth and adored her,and put her in the best daycare in london. life was somewhat normal,at 21,the 2 got married and albert had an ok job. however,he went to a law school till he was 25 and soon also got a job as a lawyer. clarissa finally got pregnant again and they moved out to the adelaide cottage,his childhood house. they lived their till 1975,and they once again moved to a beautiful estate. elisabeth was very close with her aunt marigold but her favourite was maria. but she got heart disease,something that ran in the family and caused her to die in 1978. im actually named after her,my grandma always talks about her. in 1977 however elisabeth applied to go university. she went to the university of cambridge and had many boyfriends. but she met the love of her life in 1980,my grandpa mansour ahmed,they got engaged in 1983,and she got pregantnt in 1984.

Aside from what she already reported on Carlos, there is not much else to say. What more would you like to know about someone who had blinded all the horses in his stable, and was not finally put away until King Philip discovered his son was planning on killing him next. Unfortunately, some very deranged persons were allowed free rein during previous ages if they had the right pedigree.

Queen Mary of Scots would of taken the throne. She was actually pronounced Queen of England after Queen Mary 1 death when she was in France. Scotland and France signed a treaty seeing Elizabeth as the rightful heir to the throne. Thus drama between Elizabeth and Mary began later on.

Some other monarchs also had some questions regarding the situation of Mary's legitimacy, as her mother Katherine of Aragon had first been married to Prince Arthur, Henry's older brother. Certain verses in the Bible indicated this was not proper. One verse even stated there would be no children of such a marriage, and Henry seized this as he had no male heir and used it to support his desire to rid himself of Katherine.

Lesbianism was hardly even seen as an option back then, since they considers sex and romance to be something men did and women received so two women just wasn’t an option in their mind. If Elizabeth had been a man who refused to marry or take lovers they would absolutely have accused him of being gay

People clearly spoke up when they thought someone was homosexual. Like with James VI/I or Queen Anne. It never came up, most likely because she was not homosexual and never gave that impression, even to those that knew her best.

Why would they suspect she’s a lesbian? Now god forbid a person wants to be single because they simply aren’t interested in dating. allosexuals think everyone has to date.
