This is my favorite Queen album. He’s having an affair with, it sounds like a very young woman/girl, if you listen closely. Brian plays this solo live, and HAS since it’s conception. A must see. He’s an amazing guitar player and human being. An astrophysicist!! From London’s Imperial College where they all met. I love Queen. Please explore and do more of these with them.

I would rank Queen's first album as their best, the second as their second best, the third as their third best, and so on. They just progressively lost my interest with every album. The Game was the last album I purchased and the last one I have heard in its entirety. Long live early Queen!

The first 3 Queen albums are great! I remember trying to get people into them, especially Queen Ii. All I got was "Ew! They sound like a swarm of bees.". Then Bohemian Rhapsody came out and everyone loved them. By then, I moved on. They had a lot of great songs after that, but the albums had a lot of hits and misses, imo. Still, there's no denying, they were a talent and force to be recond with.

"And nobody played synthesizer!" I saw these guys live three times (A Day at the Races, News of the World, The Game tours) and there is just nothing like it. Nothing. (I love bragging about that to my kids. 'Cause I'm evil that way...) I love this album a lot (Tenement Funster is probably my favorite Roger Taylor tune), but my favorite Queen album is Queen II. There's an album you'll love. And then all the Queen fans will want to know if you preferred side White or side Black. My preference has changed over the years. If no one's mentioned it yet, you need to know that several of these songs are connected. Tenement Funster, Flick of the Wrist, and Lily of the Valley are all connected. In the Lap of the Gods leads straight into Stone Cold Crazy. Misfire and Bring Back That Leroy Brown overlap a bit. This is gonna be fun. You know what else would be fun? City Boy's concept album, The Day the Earth Caught Fire. Oh yeah...

@@debramoore7513 85 to 95 I did a lot of live concerts including Queen on the A Kind of Magic tour. It was a great time for live music. Cheap as chips by todays standards. Seeing Pink Floyd at Wembley Stadium in 1988 was only £16. The internet & music piracy destroyed the music industry hence album sales declined dramatically so now artists rely on massive concert ticket prices to claw back revenue. We will never see the like again. The Queen ticket in 86 was only £14.50 with Status Quo as support. Live Aid was only £5 with a £20 donation. How life was so much better back then

Fun fact: that solo that the track is built around was originally from a totally different song - Son and Daughter from Queen 1 - which would act as a middle break before a reprise. You can find versions of it on recent releases of their early 70s concerts.

Going nuts on the compression, Brian May commented on Rick Beato's channel how their enginner needed a short leash. It is kinda exciting i suppose ^^ I note the raised eyebrows at the extended soloing, well we loved to hear stuff like that, he's accompanying himself on an echoplex which puts him up there with Gandalf to this (then) 14 year old. But I see you loved it too :)

If you have the time, the energy, the interest and the inclination I (and many others) will be eternally grateful to you for any songs you can do from these albums! Best we can hope for is entire album reactions to all three (especially side Black of Queen II, the most criminally underrated side of music in history)! The next three songs "Tenement Funster" "Flick of the Wrist" "Lily of the Valley" all run together. Best to listen to all three at once. The guitar solo in Brighton Rock ended up expanding live and became the basis for Brian's solo for years. The simple explanation for what's going on is that he uses two delays that are timed in a way that as he plays a scale the repeated notes are in harmony with with each other. You can hear him do this in other songs as well. And they use the same effect with vocals on the Prophets song on A Night at the Opera.

Yay! More Queen! Along with Pink Floyd, the most influential bands to me. Brian May is the reason I picked up a guitar. I really hope you'll continue on the Queen trek. Especially the Opera/Races albums. Or even a couple watchalongs of their live performances! Queen (+ Paul Rodgers) @ the Hollywood Bowl was the first concert I ever saw. Great reaction and analysis! Killer Queen was actually a big hit, it is Queen's first hit in America and Britain. This is a great album, the following 3 tracks are great together, Tenement Funster/ Flick Of The Wrist/ Lily Of The Valley. Dream Theater has also done a cover of those 3 songs, it is a great medley. Brighton Rock really displays Brian unique guitar style and signature sound, it is created with delays. Killer Queen is really Queen's only Glam Rock song, a lot of people think of Queen as a Glam Rock band, but they only dressed in Glam Rock outfits at the time. It is actually a very complex song with 29 different cords, Killer Queen is studied alongside Beethoven for a musical degree in Britain. Queen were very good at playing complex music, and making it sound very catchy and memorable as well. Freddie Mercury did love cabaret, so you are definitely correct to notice those influences. It is great that you noticed the bass and drums as well. Roger kills it on the drums in Brighton Rock, and Killer Queen is known for having a great bass line.

Fantastic thought provoking lyrics, with a sense of humour. Brian, Roger and John killing it with the instruments. Also great use of the stereo, I think both Queen and Bowie made full use of stereo. yyou have to listen to their music with headphones or surround sound for the full experience

Good morning Justin and fellow followers! As others have said, Killer Queen was a radio played single I heard in '74 when I was 14. For me, while I loved the tight harmonies, it was one I would leave on and not switch stations, but it's not one I would request. Nor did it prompt me to get either the 45 nor the album. Night At the Opera was what really brought me to Queen. Surprisingly, I fell in love with '39 first, then You're My Best Friend, and then Bohemian Rhapsody. So, Brian May was my initial draw to Queen as a vocalist. I later came to love The Prophet Song. Bloody Brilliant!

Great review. You may have missed the twist on Brighton Rock that the dude was being unfaithful to another lady on that holiday. That song was Brian's moment in pretty much every Queen concert after the album came out. Sometimes it would be reduced to just the solo, but he got very good at expanding the delays and making them work in combination. The album has one delay and he would use two in the live shows. The Live Killers version is really good. I'm surprised you hadn't heard Killer Queen before. It was fun to see your 1st reaction to such a classic. They were already doing some great production tricks at this point with harmonized guitars, the layers of vocals, and I especially like the touch of Brian's guitar making the cat sound before the line "playful as a pussycat." There are no bad tracks on this album, some stronger than others. When you've finished it you may make it one you like to just throw on and listen start to finish.

It's great how Brighton Rock is PURE raw rock/metal, then straight into a Killer Queen which is a modern/70s take on the 20s swing sound. Two completely opposite ends of music styles.

Have always loved Queen's singles and 'Killer Queen' is my favourite; it's so sophisticated and cool musically with such clever vocals. I've never listened to a Queen album, I'm not sure why, but after hearing 'Brighton Rock' for the first time I'm ready to go on this journey. Brilliant guitar solo which clearly puts Brian May on the all time great guitarist list (btw Brighton is a famous seaside town in England and at the time of this song was notorious for holiday violence between mods and rockers) but need to listen again as it was a little 'messy' the first time around.

Bo. Rhap was 1975, taken from the Night at the Opera album. These tracks were a year earlier. Brighton is a seaside playground, easily accessible from London on the train. One of the delights of seaside towns is the stick of rock. A hard candy stick 1" in diameter 12" long, usually made with the name of the town going through the centre. Graham Green wrote a novel titled Brighton Rock, but I've not read it so can't draw any parallels with the track. Obviously the title is a gimme for a song in this genre. Killer Queen is a wow. You can play as much Queen as you like, I'll hit the like button. They are good.

Hi Just ! You shall treat every album from the 70's from Queen this way ! Really nothing to reject in there. I'm not so keen with the 80's production although there are lots of highlights. I know some may throw me to hell but I think they deserve at least a place on the podium of the 1970's prog rock bands

It was Seven Seas of Rhye and Killer Queen that put the band firmly in the British public consciousness. Killer Queen reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. I think it even reached number twelve in the US Singles Chart.

Very first album I bought aged 11 in ‘74. Was hooked from the start. Hope you do the whole album and go backwards to Queen II which is a masterpiece. Everyone knows the later Queen hits, but the early stuff is well worth exploring.

KIller Queen was their first hit in the Netherlands. But I didn't buy a Queen album until Bohemian Rhapsody (A Night At The Opera) in 1975. Then I worked my way back to their first three as I loved that album so much. Come to think of it, this was my very first contemporary rock album I got. My second LP, first one being Elvis - Greatest Hits volume 2 which I still play as well. From then on I bought every Queen album, skipping Flash and Hot Space up to their their -for me- very emotional (still) fantastic last album with Freddy. 1975 I also discovered ELO, Genesis and Yes (who never had songs in the pop charts at the time) and of course Pink Floyd, Renaissance and Camel. The soundtrack of my teen years. Best music ever made ;-) Until I also found Marillion and Pendragon and countless others of course.

Yes, my favourite Queen album too. At least six of the tracks deserve 9/10 and the rest aren't far behind. Brighton Rock when done live has some of the best guitar work of the time and proves that the band wasn't just Freddie and some mates (no true fan thinks that but some commentators give that impression)

My first VINYL!!! And Queen II - stole them from my big brother in 1975. Fell in love with this band. Could not stop listening to SIDE A of Killer Queen...then one day, I flipped it over and was taken to a magical place. In the lap of the Gods...nuff said! Thank you JP for always playing a great range of work that touches all you followers. Everyone have an amazing day...boy, I was just taken back to my 10 year old self clinching that album cover and listening to the album and singing along.

I don't know if someone else has mentioned this, but Brighton Rock (the first track on the album) begins with a bit of 'I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside' which also closes the last track on the previous album - Seven Seas of Rhye.

DooooooooooD !! JP!!, So glad you are checking out early Queen. I sincerely hope you find surprise and enjoyment therein. In considering my own roots in earlier prog (Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, etc..), I've tended to consider early Queen as an outer, though rightful member of that glorious more-than-just-pop club. If you're up for it, Queen II is awesome in it's own way. Harder edged in some ways then anything they've done, but also intricate and a "sleeper" of a masterpiece. For a one-off forgotten b-sider, Prophet Song on Night at the Opera. I've gone on too long 🤣

Killer Queen was the first number 1 hit to fully utilise the 24-track tape machine. While it's true other bands have used 24 track before, most cases range from using only about 10 tracks in total or having the machine only temporarily used because they were notorious for having poor quality back then. With Queen, because they were known for their immensely layered sound, they used every track and had no issues, or at least for this song. The vocal harmonies are among some of their strongest because they utilise 7 and 9 chords for almost everything and because the mix was so tight and compact, it creates an old 1940s commercial-radio sound that translates very well with their conventional sound. Now, the problem with 24 track tape back then was because the tape had to restrict 24 track into a 2-width piece of tape, and considering the technology wasn't as good back then, the tape often was very brittle and not only that, but the tape machines were poorly made and would actually shred pieces of the iron oxide off of the tape that would in turn lose some elements of the recordings. This notably happened on their song The March Of The Black Queen which was a 16 track tape, and then again on Bohemian Rhapsody which was 24. They went over it so many times and the machine would just keep shredding pieces off. They were lucky to transfer all the recordings to a new reel of tape and onto a new machine before they lost too much. Had matters taken a different turn, we wouldn't have either of those songs.

I remember Brighton Rock from when I used to jog with it in my Walkman - and that gives you an idea of how far we're going back. The opening sort of reminds me of group of motorcyclists crashing the seaside serenity of the place, and the driving beat reminds me of a boxer's training routine, no doubt helped by that bell. Killer Queen is, as I'm sure many have pointed out, is about a high-class prostitute, a courtesan, not just a lady on the move. Recommended at the price - insatiable an appetite. Wanna try? Oh no, I'm compromised, I must apologise, if my lady should discover how I spent my holidays...
