Queen Blew up in the US after A Night at the Opera although they were building the fan base from Sheer Heart Attack and the song Killer Queen. The strength of the musicianship and unique vocals was different from most everything else at the time. And that was with extreme competition in the rock genre in the seventies. They stood out for the musicianship, songwriting soaring vocals and Freddie’s showmanship. I was fortunate to see them twice in the seventies and they were among the best show’s that I have witnessed. More Queen!!

Queen II has remained my favorite Queen album ever since I bought it when it came out. It was definitely a progressive album, with side White (all songs written by Brian except for one written by Roger) and side Black (all written by Freddie). With songs blending into each other, each side benefits from being listened to in its entirety. In the proper order on vinyl, with proper stereo separation. It was Queen playing with all the studio toys and being free and creative with their songwriting. Their next album kept some of that progressive bent and led to their breakout 4th album A Night at the Opera, a much more polished effort but still retaining their eclectic sound.

Awesome song! I love how Queen's early works explored fantasy and mythological themed type of subjects. They have so many underrated gems its mind boggling! I think that part of what makes them so popular and timeless isn't just their pure talent in the studio and even more so on stage, but the limitless range of music genres as well: pretty much whatever kind of music you like, they've sung it!

Oh yeah some Queen!! This is a band you shouldn't abandon and keep on reacting to their songs. Yes I agree, Queen's beginnings where pretty proggy I'd say... So...recommendations : Liar, Ogre Battle, The Millionaire Waltz, and the medley made up of songs which transition perfectly into each other and should be listened to as one song: Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lilly of the Valley

Oh definitely the medley - it covers like three phases of a musician’s disillusionment: the desperate need to make something of yourself (kind of autobiographical for Roger specifically), the angry phase where you realize you’re exploited, and then the point where you’ve lost sight of what your goal ever was. It comes at least partly off the fact that their management at the time was really shitty to them, so it’s all heartfelt.

The second half of the album (starting with Ogre Battle) is really set up to be one big suite. the cut-off point between songs is a little messed up in all the digital copies. What a great surprise that you are playing this one. This was from the second side, Side Black. The songs on Side Black were more rocking and I suppose from a a darker perspective. Some call this the dry run for Bohemian Rhapsody in that it has multiple movements, the layers of voices and build to a big climax. They learned a lot putting together this album and especially this song. Progressive? Absolutely the early Queen had lots of progressive elements and their songs had a lot of fantasy-type themes. On the title track of Innuendo, their final album with Freddie alive, they went all-in on progressive style.

Very good analysis and reaction. It is nice to see someone who understands composition. Some more songs to react to would be Liar live in London 1977, The Great King Rat live at the Rainbow 1974, Ogre Battle live at Hammersmith Odeon 1975, See What A Fool I ve Been at the BBC. A good studio song is It’s Late. I suggest these live performances because they are simply much better then the studio versions. This is progressive rock, the album on which this song came from was somewhat of a progressive rock/ proto metal album. Queen is the best selling band of all time behind The Beatles. And perhaps just like The Beatles, I believe a big part of their success comes from the fact that their music is very melodic. A lot of music these days are not made to be melodic, on purpose. A lot of music that has been the most successful are also melodic. They also did practically did every style of music, so there is a lot of variety, and something for anyone.

Queen is one of my favorite bands and Freddie Mercury might be my favorite vocalist. Of course I like this! Good choice Rainbow. A good listen for Queen is a song called Innuendo. At the time of recording, Freddie was dying from AIDS and only had a short time left to live. Members of the band said that he could only work for a few minutes at a time before he'd collapse but the sounds that came out of his mouth were superhuman. I agree. Also, there is a guest appearance from Steve Howe, guitarist of Yes, which adds to the appeal of the song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mWaCkrakltW3mLw.html

Queen was unique, they were fearless in their music, they didn't want to be put in a box, freedom to move into all genres. Queen was the band of the people, critics disliked them most of the time, but Queen didn't really care what they thought. They cared about the fans, they put us first and appreciated us. Freddie always made it clear to us fans that they loved us, and we sure loved them, and still do.

  • @souldreamer9056

I see this as Freddie’s first draft of trying to create an epic, something that culminated with Bohemian Rhapsody. Compared to BoRap, it is rawer, gutsier, weirder, more experimental, more full of youthful energy and defiance, and more demanding of the listener. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s not intended to be. It’s a song for the fans. Many hardcore fans Ive spoken to cite this as their favorite queen song, but you couldn’t play this to your grandma (unlike BoRap). It’s the closest queen came to prog Rock. You could even say it IS prog rock - it ticks the boxes in terms of music, lyrics and form. I loved this song when I discovered it at 14. It was my favorite. I bought more queen albums hoping to find more music like this, but there weren’t any more songs like this. It was only when I discovered Yes’ Close to the Edge at 17 that I found something that quenched that particular thirst, and then some. I haven’t heard this song in ages. It was nice to revisit it. Now, at the age of fortyhrrmph, with more experienced musical ears, I can now say that it is an ambitious song with many beautiful parts, and that it could be an even better song with a few tweaks. Alhough part of the charm with this song is that it is very “busy”/dense/crowded, I think the song would benefit if a few sections were less busy. Some bits could benefit from being cut down from 4 bars to 2, and some bits could be extended a bit. I hope I’m forgiven for not having the energy to list these tweaks in detail - I can if someone requests it. Sometimes artists revisit their early material later in their careers. It would be interesting to see how Freddie would reimagine this song at if he was alive today. Although queen never played this song live, there is a live version by a Swedish queen cover band, which is excellent. There are probably 10-15 performers on stage. The arrangement is identical to the studio version but with today’s recording technology it sounds clearer than the studio version, making it a nice listen. I also think that Queen’s official tribute band recorded a version, also with an arrangement identical to the studio version.

Queen does a few prog rock songs. I would say Liar was Freddie first prog rock type of song. The Prophet Song is also an obvious prog rock type of song, and then there is obviously Innuendo. The prog rock forums lists the Queen II and Innuendo album as prog rock. The live version you mentioned is very good.

There are not many bands that have such a wide musical range. That made them stand out of a specific genre if not the genre of queenmusic. If you first listen to one of their songs you never know what to expect. I love that. The music of this song is unpredictable but the vocals and the guitar are unmistakeable. So, although it seems paradox this song is typical Queen. Another thing that I love about their music is their ability to be ironic especially some Mercury songs. Some times i have the feeling they took things serious enough to do them as good as possible but not too serious to leave the fun behind. Best shown to my opinion by "Mustapha" on the "Jazz" album what is like Buster Keaton in tones.

A couple of things about their popularity, their first album was a minor success in the charts but its two singles failed to chart, but they worked hard to hone their live performances and built popularity around the colleges at first. Not giving up the band worked tirelessly to release two albums in the same year 1974, Queen 2 produced their first hit Seven Seas of Rhye (no.10) and the later album Sheer Heart Attack had their first major hit Killer Queen (no.2). Queen's singles were designed to be radio hits while promoting the albums which delved into many areas of experimental rock/pop. They became the flavour of the day in 1974 and most bands would have rested on their laurels at that point with a familiar sound but Queen always wanted to go farther, to push the envelope and with that their sound started to evolve, their fans stuck with them and they gathered new fans with every album release until peak 1980s. However they almost broke up on three occasions 1979 (infighting over Live Killers album), 1983 (relative failure of the Hot Space album) and 1985 (tour exhaustion and Freddie going solo). Live Aid July 1985 was credited for injecting new life into the band with a stellar performance and renewed enthusiasm to carry on with Freddie dedicating his future to the band.

I know I'm late to the party here, but oh well. I'm here now. You hit the relationship between this song and Bohemian Rhapsody on the head. MOTBQ is regarded as BoRhap's big sister. After Freddie convinced the others to do this song and it turned out to be amazing they never even hesitated about doing BoRhap. Freddie was brilliant in his creativity. Songs that you would think were horrible by any other band just worked for Queen. Once you accept that you can't put Queen in a genre box you're more open to the stuff they did. Queen's genre is Queen.

The first Queen song I heard was Keep Yourself Alive, great rocker from the first album. Must have heard it on the radio first but I definitely heard it in more detail at a favorite rock club. Also Killer Queen was next. This was late 1974 before discos which this club later became. It had everything a decent disco needed, lights, dance floor, great sound system, drinks but, no disco music yet. So, they played rock, Money by Pink Floyd, Stairway to Heaven, Rock Candy by Montrose, really, all the first Montrose album, and Queen. All sounded stellar sitting at a little club table with a pitcher of cold beer. People would attempt to dance to Stairway to Heaven , starting as a slow dance then confusingly breaking up to dance fast... hilarious, especially after a couple pitchers. Good times... Queen II is Queen at their most ferociously inventive and ambitious, before they learned to reign things back just a little and come up with more commercial and accessible material. I think a lot of credit should go to the producer Roy Thomas Baker. He was the guy with as much vision as anyone, and the technical knowhow to make it happen. The early Queen albums with him at the helm are my favourites. They were never again so bold, outrageous or interesting without him, and I began to lose interest in the band once he left. Liar from Queen's first album is probably my favourite track of theirs.

Queen were incredible live. Brian May's homemade guitar is the unique Queen sound. John Deacon's bass and Roger Taylor's drums are a killer rhythm section and Freddie Mercury was an incredible musician, vocalist and performer. Roger, Brian and Freddie's voices blend perfectly and they had a secret weapon in Roger Taylor who could sing throughout the show backing Freddie and hitting incredibly high notes. They all wrote hit songs and were all inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. No other group did that. Check out Somebody to Love Live in Montreal 1981 for a great live performance. They covered every musical genre you can imagine and never got boring. Love this song. This album is prog with Brian's white side (he wore white nail polish on his left hand in concert) and Freddie's black side(he wore black nail polish on his left hand). They were very glam in those days. Watch Live at the Rainbow 1974 for great early Queen.

So you say you’ve heard their hits and you’ve reviewed this and Innuendo - two excellent choices - but for why they’re so successful I’d have to say three things: 1. Their live performances are absolutely incredible (yes even the recent ones with Adam Lambert) 2. Their back catalogue is EXTREMELY solid and a lot of their lesser songs would have been singles in another band 3. They switch styles all over the place without sacrificing quality. You should definitely try more of their obscure stuff. The Prophet’s Song (by Brian May) is good for another complicated harmony thing, or Brighton Rock (a live version) if you want his best guitar work. Liar has great bass and ‘39 shows off Roger’s high falsetto. For a few moments of “wait wtf this is Queen?!” fun, I recommend Sleeping on the Sidewalk, Bring Back That Leroy Brown, Man On the Prowl, See What a Fool I’ve Been, Delilah, all should just utterly confuse you.

The Queen formula for success is quite clear I think. You're completely right, in that they are unique, and despite the obvious sophistication in their music it was also radio friendly enough to allow for commercial success, the vocals are epic etc etc... but these are rare qualities for one band to possess under one roof. I think Queen were extraordinarily talented and in class of their own. I actually don't think any other band, post Beatles can genuinely claim this. Zeppelin were fantastic, but they were essentially a blues rock band. Rush - my favourite band of all time - were unique in their own right, but essentially a progressive rock band. Genesis were amazing, but, again were a prog band, with pop and middle of the road rock leanings later on, but Queen were everything. On one album you'd have a hit single, alongside a prog rock mini epic, alongside some ragtime or jazz. Freddie Mercury could transition from heavy metal, to pop to opera effortlessly, and of course you had three people in the band who were excellent singers, with different voices that all harmonised perfectly. They have a unique, unmistakable sound, and the ability to make complex, sophisticated music which was always easy on the year, and very accessible. That in itself is testimony to their skill as song writers and musicians.

  • @ZENOBlAmusic

Agreed. Very good answer. People often don't realize how complex some of their music was especially some of Freddie's songs. We Are The Champions is a good example, it sounds simple and catchy, but the songs is full of key changes, and very interesting chord progressions. In reality it is actually quite a complex song, but it doesn't sound that way, when you listen to the song casually. It is a skill to make complex music that is still accessible to everyone.

White queen I prefer most on this album, ogre battle second. This song is a pre epic unconscious tryout for bohemian rhapsody. Got it on vinyl since 1976, like Queen I and sheer heart attack that was my first lp in 74, awesome.

The album Queen II was a real turning point for the band. You really should listen to the whole thing. If not, at the very least listen to something from the "white" side of the album (predominantly written by Brian as opposed to "black" which was mainly Freddie). The obvious choice for comparison would be "White Queen", but I have a particular fondness for "Father to Son" too. As an aside, I do consider this to be their most progressive album, if not "Prog" as such. I love the way the majority of the songs segue into each other beautifully.

Queen was popular with the people, and that IMO was the reason they stayed as long as they did. They also had four separate songwriters so it never became boring. They could do any genre of music and never sound the same. The critics were not so welcoming to them, especially in the beginning of their run.

Listening to this, I can't help but see in this song a draft of Bohemian Rhapsody, much worse. The final part is much better. Somewhere, it reminds me of the main title of the Flash soundtrack. I can't take away from Queen the fact of having been able to create something completely new in the world of music, with the peculiar playing of Brian May, the fantastic voice of Freddy Mercury and the use of these vocal harmonies (which are the signature of the group but which can sometimes be annoying as they are too much used). Besides, we must salute that it is a real tour de force to have achieved this kind of things considering the technology of that time.

I think Queen is still not much popular. I am not talking about popularity of their name. Everybody, literally everybody knows Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions and Crazy Little Thing Called Love (eventhough some people do not know the artist behind these songs but still). I mean everybody knows Queen is big and they have big hits, but that's all. Queen would/will never be as popular as The Beatles maybe, since The Beatles are the legit pioneers (I cannot say they were/are the best but I can say they were/are the biggest), but if people would know Queen's other songs too, I cannot imagine how big they would be. Their hits are very good songs as people call them as masterpieces. But I do not call them masterpieces (except Bohemian Rhapsody) because the real masterpieces are their lesser-known songs. They literally created their own genre and every single song of Queen (at least Queen in the 70's) sounds totally different but you can still tell it is Queen. I mean for most of the bands/artists, if I don't like their one song I don' t like their other songs too because it is just their style, they apply the same style (you know what I mean). But if you don't like one song of Queen, there is definately a different song you would be compulsively listen and another song for jamming and another song for dancing etc. on their discography. I know I talk too much about them (eventhough I am not even a fan of Queen and even do not know all of their songs) and I too discovered this song lately which brought me here. This song really amazed me and I loved your reaction. You should do more Queen's lesser-known songs btw. Another Queen masterpiece I've recently discovered: You Take My Breath Away, you should listen this.
