how i feel about the vocals of everyone in the band: Freddie; growling, but smooth. Immediately recognizable, and is the sound of many rock anthems. Brian; great singer for more mellow tunes, beautiful and sometimes even melancholy. Roger; very soprano but can be a hard rock singer too. John; look up his accidental solo of radio gaga... it is indescribable.

Roger's screechy voice was great for their rockier and punkier stuff. No one else in that band could have pulled off the song Sheer Heart Attack. His voice also adds a well-needed abrasiveness to Fight From The Inside.

Brian sings this incomparably. It is ridiculous for anyone to criticise his performance of this. That version is my favourite although it's great to hear Freddy sing it too. Brian's was absolutely astonishing.

I love both versions. Freddie's voice is always special to hear. But Brain May wrote it about the passing of his beloved cat and you can hear the sadness which brings another level to the version he sings - both equally stunning and wonderful

It's great to hear Freddy sing this but the album version is incomparable. Brian sings it brilliantly with incredible heart and delicacy. This is without doubt one of Queen's very best songs. Heart-rending and indescribably beautiful.

Yes, I came to hear this version and of course Freddie is immaculate but I much prefer the original I grew up with. It would be a big mistake to underrate Brian as a singer only because he had adopted the one and only Freddie to his band.

so does nobody else think brian's version and freddie's version is bascially almost two different songs? they carry the song in such different ways and how they both each sing it feels like it gives different meaning to each version

This song is about losing a friend, for Brian’s case it was his cat (this song was intended for his cat) but I feel like we can all relate. Death is something everyone goes through eventually in their life. I feel like anyone can relate to this. I personally prefer Brian’s version but I still love this one. Freddie had stuff he had to go through too.

For those arguing why Brian’s version sounds better, it’s pretty simple: Freddie as a born singer had his style, and this is simply not a melody he would’ve written. And indeed, he sounds here as he would singing an Elvis Presley, Elton John or i don’t know, a Robert Plant song. Still sounds like a cover. The rhythm, phrasing and melody are a subtle combo that is very personal to each vocalist, and this is simply not Freddie’s singing style, so it sounds a bit off. On the other hand, Brian being the composer sounds obviously perfect. The same would apply if Freddie was trying to sing “I’m in love with my car”, I’m pretty sure 99% of us would still prefer Roger’s version

Bullshit. Freddie always sang the others' songs and made them his own. So we would prefer "Hammer to fall" or "We will rock you" sung by Brian? The list is endless.

@@sabrinauraga9320 well you have a point, but also proved mine. Like you said, he made those songs his own. What that means is, Brian would come up with a tune, lyrics and a vocal basic melody, but Freddie would add his touch by changing the phrasing or the original melody by quite a bit, appropriating it so much it sounds as if he composed the melody himself, fitting his vocal style perfectly. Now what’s going on here is different, it’s a song that was originally sung by Brian, meaning the rhythm and phrasing of the melody was established and fitting Brian’s vocal style and range. Freddie isn’t trying to remake the vocals from scratch, but like I said, singing like he would a Sinatra’s song. It’s the difference between rearranged covers and karaoke.

Or you are just used to the Brian version. It is the version people have heard for years, but if you only ever heard the Freddie version it would be fine, although the song feels a bit on the low side.

Well i'm not sure what science the above is based on. Freddie is a better singer, so his version is always going to sound better! As Roger said about Heaven for Everyone it's not until you hear Freddie sing you realise how much further he could take things.

very interesting but Brian really captured what the vocals needed to be. Freddie is just too powerful and active as a singer to capture the subtleness needed here. glad they put Brian's version on the Album.

As if you could improve this hidden gem, they open the vaults and Mr. Mercury gives us another reason to say he's the greatest EVER. This is one box set not to missed.

As much as I absolutely adore Freddie’s voice, I feel like this song is more suited for Brian. Vocally, Freddie can hit more notes and has a better range, but there’s just something I can’t put my finger on about Brian’s version that just fits the bill. I’m just glad Brian’s vocals in this song made it onto the album.

I’m here because my dog died yesterday and I needed to grieve. I listened to the published version, first, but Freddie’s voice is touching, and healing, in ways May’s just can’t deliver, not to me. I feel like the only reason this version is worse than the official one is that it’s unpolished. Even the lyrics aren’t exactly the same, it’s obvious that Freddie is just sketching the vocals out so they can get a better feeling out of it and make the due changes.

@@nightlover5194 Nothing to do with jealousy. It’s Brian’s song; HIS is the original, about the death of his cat, and he and Roger usually sang lead on at least one song per album. Not always, and not as often in later years, but there are two dozen or more songs in which they did.

Freddie and Brian both killed it singing this. But the band chose Brians vocals for a reason and that should be enough for us to be satisfied with.
